This 1948 U.S. Army documentary of the Nuremberg trials was first screened in Germany in November, 1948 and was not released in the U.S. until a restored version was completed by a team in 2016. Using Nazi and allied films, documents, and testimony, "Nuremberg" chronicles the rise of Nazi Germany, its annexation of neighboring countries, military invasions, war crimes, and death camps. Following the Second World War, the Nuremberg Trials took place which saw the remaining members of Hitler's Nazi government brought to trial. The defendants were accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, being considered the perpetrators of the Holocaust. On trial was Albert Speer, a man regarded as 'Hitler's Architect,' who also served during World War 2 as the Minister of Armaments and Ammunition. Speer managed to improve production in the armaments industry significantly, but he did this using slave labour and workers from concentration camps. But as the verdicts were read out at the Nuremberg Trial, Albert Speer was not executed for his crimes which shocked many. At the trial, Speer tried to portray himself as 'The Good Nazi,' and as someone who was unaware of the Final Solution and the killing process inside of the concentration camps. He admitted using slave labour but refused to accept that the conditions of the workers were terrible who were working for him. It's considered now that Speer lied to the Nuremberg Trial and that he actually was complicit in the Holocaust, and evidence has been found following his death that shows him to have been a liar. Albert Speer should have been sentenced to death alongside Hermann Goring, Joachim Von Ribbentrop and other Nazis following the trial, but he managed to escape with imprisonment. It exposes the collaboration between the generals and the Gestapo, their involvement in brutal acts such as slave labour and lynch law, and their ideological continuity in the post-war Bundeswehr. The final chapters critique the failure of true de-Nazification, highlighting how economic and military elites preserved their influence under a democratic façade. Through courtroom revelations and historical records, the book presents a powerful indictment of militarism, reactionary politics, and the enduring legacy of fascism in post-war Germany. Arkady Polutrak, a lawyer by education, was chairman of a divisional military tribunal, and an member of an army military tribunal during the Second World War. In 1945-46, he was Secretary of the Soviet delegation at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. At present he is a senior research worker at the Institute of State and Law of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow. He is the author of The Soviet War (which has been translated to English and Spanish), From Munich to Nuremberg and a series of essays on International problems. Yevgeny Zaitsev is a practising lawyer in Leningrad. His speeches to court have been published in 1956 and 1960 in volumes of collected speeches by Soviet lawyers. During the Second World War he was a member of an army military tribunal. He is the author (jointly with Arkady Polutrak) of The Soviet War and a number of essays on International problems. "The Executioners", aka "Hitler's Executioners", dates to 1961 and was based on articles by Joseph J. Heydecker and Johannes Leeb in "Münchener Illustrierte". The narration was also written by Heydecker and John Leeb; the film was directed by Felix Von Podmanitzky and produced by Joseph Harris. The movie tells the story of the Nuremberg trials, contrasted with events that took place before and during WWII, as the Germans took over much of continental Europe and began a reign of terror. Chilling testimonies by the defendants (who do not show any signs of remorse) are shown, including that of Herrmann Göring, Alfred Seyss-Inquart, Rudolf Hess, Konstantin von Neurath, Joachim von Ribbentrop, and Alfred Rosenberg. Part 2 looks at the defeat of Nazi Germany with footage from Stalingrad and the Eastern Front, and from D-Day, through the arrival of American troops in Germany. The film chronicles the horrific crimes of Joseph Goebbels and other German leaders. Footage from the Bergen-Belsen, Dachau, and Auschwitz extermination camps is shown, contrasted against the criminal proceedings against Göring, Kaltenbrunner, Sauckel, von Neurath, and Fritzsche testifying and making their final pleas. At the end of the film, Karl Herrmann Franz is led to the gallows and executed. The Nuremberg trials were held between 1945-46 by the Allies against representatives of the defeated Nazi Germany, for plotting and carrying out invasions of other countries, and crimes against humanity.
