This paper describes methodology and an associated computer program for the design of wing lifting surfaces with attainable thrust taken into consideration. The approach is based on the determination of an optimum combination of a series of candidate surfaces rather than the more commonly used candidate loadings. Special leading-edge surfaces are selected to provide distributed leading-edge thrust forces which compensate for any failure to achieve the full theoretical leading-edge thrust, and a second series of general candidate surfaces is selected to minimize drag subject to constraints on the lift coefficient and, if desired, on the pitching moment coefficient. A primary purpose of the design approach is the introduction of attainable leading-edge thrust considerations so that relatively mild camber surfaces may be employed in the achievement of aerodynamic efficiencies comparable to those attainable if full theoretical leading-edge thrust could be achieved. The program provides an analysis as well as a design capability and is applicable to both subsonic and supersonic flow.

Under support from this grant, we performed work on simulation and design for a number of important topics. These included level set modeling of dendritic solidification, regularized Wulff flows, singularities for flow in porous media, evaluation of American options, epitaxial growth and strain, and electrodeposition. Key results include the following: 1) We developed a new reduced order model for epitaxial growth. The average coverage, the average island size and the average inter-island distance at each layer of the system. The resulting equations are a system of 3 eta ODEs for a epitaxial film of thickness eta layers. This system displays good agreement with the oscillations observed in RHEED measurements during MBE growth, including the variations in the envelope of the oscillations. We expect this model to be useful both for basic understanding and as a tool for control methods. 2) We presented a level set approach for the modeling of dendritic solidification. These simulations used a new second order accurate symmetric discretization of the Poisson equation. Numerical results indicated that this method can be used successfully on complex interfacial shapes and can simulate many of the physical features of dendritic solidification. We applied this algorithm to the simulation of the dendritic crystallization of a pure melt and find that the dendrite tip velocity and tip shapes are in excellent agreement with solvability theory. Numerical results were presented in both two and three spatial dimensions. 3) We proposed a method of regularizing the backwards parabolic partial differential equations that arise from using gradient descent to minimize surface energy integrals within a level set framework in two and three dimensions. The proposed regularization energy is a functional of the mean curvature of the surface. Our method used a local level set technique to evolve the resulting fourth order PDEs in time.

A reexamination of some numerical methods is considered in light of the new class of computers which use vector streaming to achieve high computation rates. A study has been made of the effect on the relative efficiency of several numerical methods applied to a particular fluid flow problem when they are implemented on a vector computer. The method of Brailovskaya, the alternating direction implicit method, a fully implicit method, and a new method called partial implicitization have been applied to the problem of determining the steady state solution of the two-dimensional flow of a viscous imcompressible fluid in a square cavity driven by a sliding wall. Results are obtained for three mesh sizes and a comparison is made of the methods for serial computation.

Lexicographic sequencing of the vector representations are shown in this thesis to lead to efficiencies in the storage and solution of the balance equations and to provide a key to efficient generation and storage of the states. Convergence properties of three iterative solution methods are examined for cyclic models, such as those which can result from a central-server model. An analysis of possible bias in software monitors on computer systems is analyzed in terms of a central-server model of such systems. Techniques for examining tape-mounting policies and core-allocation policies are also suggested. (Author)

It's author uses the name Captain Charles Johnson, generally considered a pseudonym.<br /><br /> The real identity of the author was thought by some scholars to be Daniel Defoe, although this has since been disputed. The publisher Nathaniel Mist or somebody working for him are other suggested authors.<br /><br /> In the first volume, "Johnson" sticks fairly close to the available sources, though he embellishes the stories somewhat. This was the Fortnightly Poetry project for January 29, 2012.<br><br>In 1892 the opportunity of a lifetime came to this young versifier, when Frank Yeigh, the president of the Young Liberals' Club, of Toronto, conceived the idea of having an evening of Canadian literature, at which all available Canadian authors should be guests and read from their own works.<br><br>Among the authors present on this occasion was Pauline Johnson, who contributed to the programme one of her compositions, entitled "A Cry from an Indian Wife"; and when she recited without text this much-discussed poem, which shows the Indian's side of the North-West Rebellion, she was greeted with tremendous applause from an audience which represented the best of Toronto's art, literature and culture. She was the only one on the programme who received an encore, and to this she replied with one of her favourite canoeing poems.<br><br>The following morning the entire press of Toronto asked why this young writer was not on the platform as a professional reader; while two of the dailies even contained editorials on the subject, inquiring why she had never published a volume of her poems, and insisted so strongly that the public should hear more of her, that Mr. Frank Yeigh arranged for her to give an entire evening in Association Hall within two weeks from the date of her first appearance. Johnson's only novel, <i>The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man</i>, was originally published anonymously in 1912. It is a fictional novel written as a memoir of an unnamed biracial narrator who grew up in the South during the Reconstruction and post-Reconstruction eras. It is a story in which the narrator relates how as a young boy he initially assumed that he was white, and how his notions of racial identity were suddenly turned upside down one day—how from that moment on he was inclined to view himself and the world about him from the perspective of blackness.
