Numerical methods and computer programs for two-dimensional and axisymmetric supersonic flow over blunt-nosed and flared bodies

This paper describes methodology and an associated computer program for the design of wing lifting surfaces with attainable thrust taken into consideration. The approach is based on the determination of an optimum combination of a series of candidate surfaces rather than the more commonly used candidate loadings. Special leading-edge surfaces are selected to provide distributed leading-edge thrust forces which compensate for any failure to achieve the full theoretical leading-edge thrust, and a second series of general candidate surfaces is selected to minimize drag subject to constraints on the lift coefficient and, if desired, on the pitching moment coefficient. A primary purpose of the design approach is the introduction of attainable leading-edge thrust considerations so that relatively mild camber surfaces may be employed in the achievement of aerodynamic efficiencies comparable to those attainable if full theoretical leading-edge thrust could be achieved. The program provides an analysis as well as a design capability and is applicable to both subsonic and supersonic flow.

Under support from this grant, we performed work on simulation and design for a number of important topics. These included level set modeling of dendritic solidification, regularized Wulff flows, singularities for flow in porous media, evaluation of American options, epitaxial growth and strain, and electrodeposition. Key results include the following: 1) We developed a new reduced order model for epitaxial growth. The average coverage, the average island size and the average inter-island distance at each layer of the system. The resulting equations are a system of 3 eta ODEs for a epitaxial film of thickness eta layers. This system displays good agreement with the oscillations observed in RHEED measurements during MBE growth, including the variations in the envelope of the oscillations. We expect this model to be useful both for basic understanding and as a tool for control methods. 2) We presented a level set approach for the modeling of dendritic solidification. These simulations used a new second order accurate symmetric discretization of the Poisson equation. Numerical results indicated that this method can be used successfully on complex interfacial shapes and can simulate many of the physical features of dendritic solidification. We applied this algorithm to the simulation of the dendritic crystallization of a pure melt and find that the dendrite tip velocity and tip shapes are in excellent agreement with solvability theory. Numerical results were presented in both two and three spatial dimensions. 3) We proposed a method of regularizing the backwards parabolic partial differential equations that arise from using gradient descent to minimize surface energy integrals within a level set framework in two and three dimensions. The proposed regularization energy is a functional of the mean curvature of the surface. Our method used a local level set technique to evolve the resulting fourth order PDEs in time.

The major difficulties in determination of the steady-state properties of a Markovian queuing network by numerical solution of a set of linear balance equations are the choice of vector representation of the states, the generation and storage of the states, and generation, storage and solution of the balance equations. Lexicographic sequencing of the vector representations are shown in this thesis to lead to efficiencies in the storage and solution of the balance equations and to provide a key to efficient generation and storage of the states. Convergence properties of three iterative solution methods are examined for cyclic models, such as those which can result from a central-server model. An analysis of possible bias in software monitors on computer systems is analyzed in terms of a central-server model of such systems. Techniques for examining tape-mounting policies and core-allocation policies are also suggested. (Author)

The transient heat conduction equation, with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, is solved by the methods of finite-differences and finite-elements, and the numerical solutions are investigated with respect to accuracy and stability. A general six point finite-difference expression is used for which there exists a high order accurate modification. The finite-element method used is based on a stationary variational principle. Several methods for treating accuracy and convergence problems which result from a discontinuity in the initial condition are investigated. The Crank-Nicolson method is a special case of both the finite-difference and finite-element methods. The finite-difference version of the Crank-Nicolson method is shown to be more accurate than the finite-element version, especially when a discontinuity exists between the initial condition and the boundary conditions. The high order accurate schemes for both finite-differences and finite-elements are shown to be equivalent for the case of linear elements. Some of the results suggest the possibility of finding a finite-element scheme which is highly accurate in a mean square sensr over the entire solution domain. (Author)

The computer program NERF (Numerical Evaluation of Reliability Functions) has been designed to evaluate the reliability functions that result from the application of reliability analysis to the fatigue of aircraft structures, in particular, those reliability functions derived by Payne and his co-workers at the Aeronautical Research Laboratories. The NERF program, although based on the Payne reliability models is capable of extension to more complex models as the need arises. This dcoument details the mathematical development of the reliability functions evaluated by NERF and describes the computer program in sufficient detail to allow desired modifications.

A reexamination of some numerical methods is considered in light of the new class of computers which use vector streaming to achieve high computation rates. A study has been made of the effect on the relative efficiency of several numerical methods applied to a particular fluid flow problem when they are implemented on a vector computer. The method of Brailovskaya, the alternating direction implicit method, a fully implicit method, and a new method called partial implicitization have been applied to the problem of determining the steady state solution of the two-dimensional flow of a viscous imcompressible fluid in a square cavity driven by a sliding wall. Results are obtained for three mesh sizes and a comparison is made of the methods for serial computation.

The design and development of a program of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) which assists the student in learning elementary algorithms of an undergraduate numerical methods course is presented, along with special programing features such as partial precision arithmetic, computer-generated problems, and approximate matching of mathematical expressions. The program, designed to operate under the Purdue Instructional and Computational Learning System (PICLS) language, is described in detail: first, there is a tutorial presentation of the mathematical development surrounding an algorithm, the student then formulates the solutions to several problems to display a working knowledge of the algorithm, and, finally, the student progresses to an exploratory stage where he may formulate the solution to his own problems (all computation is assumed by the computer). “Max Brand", the most used pseudonym of Frederick Schiller Faust (1892-1944), is best known today for his western fiction. Faust began in the early twentieth century selling his stories to the pulp magazines, writing in many genres under numerous pseudonyms. He is probably best known as the creator of the character Destry. His novel Destry Rides Again has been filmed several times, most notably the 1939 version starring James Stewart and Marlene Dietrich. Also his character Dr. Kildare which was popularized in film and on television earned him a fortune. <br />Faust’s novel <em>The Untamed</em>, the first of three novels featuring the classic western hero Dan Barry was filmed in 1920, starring Tom Mix. Faust became a front line war correspondent and died of wounds received while traveling with American soldiers in Italy, May 12, 1944.<br></br>Trailin’ (1919) tells the story of Anthony Bard, a young aristocract from the east with a hunger for adventure, who sees his father murdered in the yard of their home. Frederick Schiller Faust (1892-1944), is best known today for his western fiction. Faust was born in Seattle, Washington and at an early age moved with his parents to the San Joaquin Valley in California where he worked as a ranch hand. After a failed attempt to enlist in the Great War in 1917 and with the help of Mark Twain's sister he met Robert Hobart Davis, editor of All-Story Weekly and became a regular contributor, writing under his most used pseudonym “Max Brand”. He wrote in many genres during his career and produced more than 300 western novels and stories. His most famous characters were Destry and Dr. Kildare, both of which were produced in film. Faust was killed in Italy in 1944 as a front line war correspondent at the age of 51. He is buried in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy.<br><br>Ronicky Doone (1926) is a hero of the west, respected by the law-abiding citizen and hated by bushwhacking bandits. Bill Gregg is a man in love, not about to be deflected from meeting his lady love for the first time, and willing to stand up to the living legend to reach her. This initial meeting leads to a friendship between the two and they travel east to New York City on the trail of the girl.
