1Natural History of Selborne

The Reverend Gilbert White was the curate of the village of Selborne, a village in Hampshire, from 1784 to his death in 1793, living most of his life in the village. The book is in the form of a collection of letters to two friends, discussing the natural history of the areas that he knew, and natural history in general. The Blazed Trail is the story of early lumbermen in the northern woods of Michigan. The novel portrays the challenges faced by the workers focusing on one, Harry Thorpe, as he endeavors to be successful though completely unskilled when he enters the woods. He was a keen observer of the beauties of nature and human nature, yet could render them in a plain-spoken style. Based on his own experience, whether writing camping journals or Westerns, he included pithy and fun details about cabin-building, canoeing, logging, gold-hunting, and guns and fishing and hunting. He also interviewed people who had been involved in the fur trade, the California gold rush and other pioneers which provided him with details that give his novels verisimilitude. This is a very cute children's book. Mr. West's half-sister Matilda is orphaned and she comes staying with the family for a while. It looks like Mr West doesn't like her very much, her being "blue" and all. What this means is an entirely unknown concept to his children, but they also anticipate that they won't like her very much either. But then Matilda arrives and neither her skin nor her hair are blue at all, and she turns out very very nice - winning the hearts of the children in no time. - Summary by Carolin

The 21st Century, so far, has seen a dramatic and widespread questioning of "Science", much of it from "Evangelicals". But this attack on science is nothing new! Author White, in the late 1800's put it this way: from his introduction: "In all modern history, interference with science in the supposed interest of religion, no matter how conscientious such interference may have been, has resulted invariably, in the direst evils both to religion and to science; on the other hand, all untrammeled scientific investigation, no matter how dangerous to religion some of its stages may have seemed for the time to be, has invariably resulted in the highest good, both of religion and of science."<br><br> In these volumes, White chronicles the gradual emancipation of science from theology in various fields. <br><br> But White's work has been condemned by modern researchers! Historian of science and agnostic Ronald Numbers has stated, in a collection dealing with inaccuracies made by White and others, "Historians of science have known for years that White's ... accounts are more propaganda than history."<br><br> Biographer Albert Bigelow Paine mentioned that this book was one of Mark Twain's favorite books, near the end of his life. Edward Lucas White was a well-regarded author of weird fiction, admired by the likes of H. P. Lovecraft. The title story of this collection is an oft-anthologized strange tale of the dangers of colonialism with a truly jaw-dropping body horror climax. Many of the stories in this collection have White taking the time to build character and place only to pull the rug out from underneath the reader, leaving them with something truly bizarre and unnatural.
