1Amixed Integer Nonlinear Programming Model For Site-specific Management Zone Problem

Precision agriculture employs sophisticated tools to optimize decision-making in farming, aiming to simultaneously improve crop yields and manage resources more effectively in a context of increasing scarcity and rising costs. A key aspect of precision agriculture is the delineation of site-specific management zones (SSMZs), which involves segmenting a field into areas that are homogeneous in terms of soil physicochemical properties. The problem of delineating SSMZ have been approached using a wide variety of methodologies, all of which, heuristic, focus on finding feasible solutions. Until this work, there was no exact algorithm or mathematical model that would allow for a point of comparison. This paper introduces a novel approach to tackle the delineation of SSMZ with orthogonal shapes through the development of a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. Small instances with different scenarios show the scope of the proposed approach and the significance of the results. It provides a structure for the SSMZ problem with orthogonal shapes and establishes a bench mark for evaluating the performance of heuristic solutions, metaheuristics, or hybrid approaches.

2Nonlinear Integer Programming

Research efforts of the past fifty years have led to a development of linear integer programming as a mature discipline of mathematical optimization. Such a level of maturity has not been reached when one considers nonlinear systems subject to integrality requirements for the variables. This chapter is dedicated to this topic. The primary goal is a study of a simple version of general nonlinear integer problems, where all constraints are still linear. Our focus is on the computational complexity of the problem, which varies significantly with the type of nonlinear objective function in combination with the underlying combinatorial structure. Numerous boundary cases of complexity emerge, which sometimes surprisingly lead even to polynomial time algorithms. We also cover recent successful approaches for more general classes of problems. Though no positive theoretical efficiency results are available, nor are they likely to ever be available, these seem to be the currently most successful and interesting approaches for solving practical problems. It is our belief that the study of algorithms motivated by theoretical considerations and those motivated by our desire to solve practical instances should and do inform one another. So it is with this viewpoint that we present the subject, and it is in this direction that we hope to spark further research.

7Packing While Traveling: Mixed Integer Programming For A Class Of Nonlinear Knapsack Problems

Packing and vehicle routing problems play an important role in the area of supply chain management. In this paper, we introduce a non-linear knapsack problem that occurs when packing items along a fixed route and taking into account travel time. We investigate constrained and unconstrained versions of the problem and show that both are NP-hard. In order to solve the problems, we provide a pre-processing scheme as well as exact and approximate mixed integer programming (MIP) solutions. Our experimental results show the effectiveness of the MIP solutions and in particular point out that the approximate MIP approach often leads to near optimal results within far less computation time than the exact approach.

In this paper we develop an algorithm to optimise a nonlinear utility function of multiple objectives over the integer efficient set. Our approach is based on identifying and updating bounds on the individual objectives as well as the optimal utility value. This is done using already known solutions, linear programming relaxations, utility function inversion, and integer programming. We develop a general optimisation algorithm for use with k objectives, and we illustrate our approach using a tri-objective integer programming problem.

10Intersection Cuts For Nonlinear Integer Programming: Convexification Techniques For Structured Sets

We study the generalization of split and intersection cuts from Mixed Integer Linear Programming to the realm of Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming. Constructing such cuts requires calculating the convex hull of the difference of two convex sets with specific geometric structures. We introduce two techniques to give precise characterizations of such convex hulls and use them to construct split and intersection cuts for several classes of sets. In particular, we give simple formulas for split cuts for essentially all convex sets described by a single quadratic inequality and for more general intersection cuts for a wide variety of convex quadratic sets.

A solution procedure for the model is suggested, but an efficient algorithm is not available for solving the model. Some areas for future research are also suggested.

In this paper, we mainly study one class of convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems (MINLPs) with non-differentiable data. By dropping the differentiability assumption, we substitute gradients with subgradients obtained from KKT conditions, and use the outer approximation method to reformulate convex MINLP as one equivalent MILP master program. By solving a finite sequence of subproblems and relaxed MILP problems, we establish an outer approximation algorithm to find the optimal solution of this convex MINLP. The convergence of this algorithm is also presented. The work of this paper generalizes and extends the outer approximation method in the sense of dealing with convex MINLPs from differentiable case to non-differentiable one.

Ralph Gomory has recently aroused interest in a special type of knapsack problem in which the constraint coefficients and constant term are elements of a finite additive group. The significance of this problem lies in the fact that it is closely related to the general integer linear programming problem, resulting by removing the nonnegativity restrictions on those variables in the general problem that lie in an optimal basis for the associated linear program. Gomory has shown how to solve the special knapsack problem by adapting a dynamic programming recursion originally designed for the ordinary knapsack problem, and has identified sufficient conditions under which the solution of the special knapsack problem will satisfy the nonnegativity requirements in the general integer program, thereby yielding an optimal solution to that problem as well. In this paper the author presents an algorithm for solving the special knapsack problem that is capable of accommodating a variety of constraints in addition to the special knapsack constraint. The purpose in doing this is to expand the range of problems for which the optimal solution for the special problem will also provide an optimal solution to the general integer program from which it was derived.
