Online talk given 14th November 2024   Jonathan Kuttab is a co-founder of the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq and co-founder of Nonviolence International. A well-known international human rights lawyer, Jonathan practices in the US, Palestine and Israel. He serves on the Board of Bethlehem Bible College and is President of the Board of Holy Land Trust. Jonathan was the head of the Legal Committee negotiating the Cairo Agreement of 1994 between Israel and the PLO. After graduating with his Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from Virginia Law School, and practising a couple years on Wall Street, Jonathan returned home to Palestine. Jonathan was visiting scholar at Osgoode Law School at York University in Toronto in the Fall of 2017, and is a founding director of Just Peace Advocates Mouvement pour une Paix Juste, a Canadian based international law human rights not-for-profit organisation. Jonathan is currently the executive director of Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA). Jonathan is a resident of East Jerusalem, and is a partner of Kuttab, Khoury and Hanna Law Firm in East Jerusalem.

Rula Salameh is a veteran journalist, community organiser, and the Education and Outreach Director in Palestine for Just Vision, an organisation that fills a media gap in Israel-Palestine through independent storytelling and strategic audience engagement. She produced three of Just Vision’s films – Budrus (2009), My Neighbourhood (2012), and Naila and the Uprising (2017) – and has led the team’s public engagement efforts across Palestinian society for over 15 years. Since 2019, she has contributed a weekly column to Ma’an News covering Palestinian social issues from the perspective of grassroots communities. In addition to her work with Just Vision, Rula is the host of Falasteen al-Khair (“Philanthropy in Palestine”), one of the most popular TV shows in Palestine, and the General Director of the NGO Falasteen al-Khair. Rula was one of the founders of the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation in 1993 following the Oslo Accords. She has served as the Middle East Liaison for the organisation Peace X Peace, as the Project Coordinator for Middle East Nonviolence and Democracy (MEND), and established a computer lab and children’s library in the Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem through her work with Refugee Trust International. Rula holds an international diploma in Computers in Business and Management from Cambridge International College and attended Birzeit University in Ramallah. She is a member of the International Federation of Journalists.

In the wake of the 25th UN climate change summit, scientists and activists are warning that governments are failing to act as quickly as the climate crisis requires. Taking matters into their own hands, youth organizers with Extinction Rebellion have led marches, school walkouts, and hunger strikes around the world. 31/3/2009 http://farmingunderfire.blogspot.com/2009/04/non-violent-resistance-wins-battle-in.html After yesterday's celebration of Land Day, this morning ISM Gaza Strip activists returned to accompany Palestinian farmers in the area of Khouza'a, east of Khan Younis where they were almost shot on the 24th of February. The fields that the farmers were harvesting today are far away from the Israeli watchtowers and about 400 meters from the Green Line. Despite this, the farmers had problems to harvest them on the two previous days that they tried because of shooting by Israeli troops. The work began at 7.40 am and about 25 minutes later two jeeps moved along the fence and approached the group of farmers and activists. The soldiers got out and start watching. It was obvious that the group was posing no threat to the soldiers. Most of the Palestinian farmers were middle-aged women. Most of the international solidarity activists were wearing fluorescent or Red Crescent vests. But after a while the Israeli soldiers started shooting. One of the ISM activists talked to them by megaphone but they continued shooting. But this time the Palestinian farmers resisted the attack, by ignoring the fire and continuing to work. And they won. The Israeli soldiers quit the attempt to expel the Palestinian farmers from their land and withdrew. Despite the intimidation of the Israeli soldiers, despite the fact that they could hear the intense battles between the Israeli occupation forces and the Palestinian resistance fighters (two of them killed and another two injured) further north, east of Al Meghazi camp, and they could watch the military helicopters and the F-16s, today, the Palestinian farmers, resisted and defended their rights on their land. Today they won the battle, tomorrow is another day...

Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Master of Arts, Social Ethics Thesis Abstract: This thesis will provide a methodology for practicing non-violence as a personal and social ethic within the complexities of urban life. The term heroic love is introduced as one possible means to express Christian nonviolence in American cities. Heroic love has three aspects. It is a valid extension of the Christian non-violent tradition. Second, it is a plausible method that can be practically expressed through a spectrum of passive, moderate, and active behavior based upon fourteen basic principles and nine possible tactics. And third, it is an existing practice that can be found in rough and general forms in existing Christian endeavors.
