The Treaty of Paris was signed on the 20th of November 1815 following the decisive defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo, and his subsequent and second abdication, In February of 1815, Napoleon had escaped from his exile on Elba, and by 20th March had re-entered Paris, beginning the Hundred Days of his restored rule. In the title Bowen states that he is "Preserving all that is useful in the Fourth and Last edition of the Complete Geographer, publish'd under the name of Herman Moll, &c." The 70 maps were also published in two other forms: in "A Complete Atlas" of 1752, and as the Maps for the "Complete Collection of Voyages" by John Harris, in 1744-48 (M&B). The text is massive and interesting, and there are several important maps of America: America, West Indies, Mexico, Louisiana, Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania et al, and Newfoundland et al. The map of the World in Hemispheres is lacking in this copy. Both volumes are newly bound in full brown leather covered boards with "Geography. Vol. 1" and -Geography. Relief shown pictorially. Includes abbreviations. Atlas is complete with 41 double-page with table of contents "A catalogue of maps which compose this new sett ... " Maps are copper engraved by the Oxford engravers M. Burghers, R. Spofforth, Benjamin Cole and Sutton Nicholls. The atlas contains, in most cases, two of each map to compare the ancient and modern configurations. Showing boundaries, major cities and towns, rivers, mountains, churches and fortifications. Each map carries a dedication "To his Highness William Duke of Gloucester." The maps are highly decorative, with elaborate title cartouches surrounded by coats of arms, putti, or allegorical figures. The two world maps feature the island of California, a partially explored Australia, and numerous notations of parts as yet undiscovered. The Americas stand on their own, with a single map each for North America and South America, as well as one for the English Plantations in America. The map of North America also depicts the island of California and Florida encompasses the entire south. This edition is similar to the first edition of 1700 but has a different title page and several of the maps have been updated. Publication Date is estimated to be circa 1710, while the date of each map is given as 1700 when they were originally published. The Oxford scholar Wells produced these maps for the education of his young pupil William, Duke of Gloucester, the son of Queen Anne and George, Prince of Denmark. William suffered from encephalitis and died in 1700 at the age of eleven. Wells dedicated and published the atlas as a tribute to the Duke.

Fordham lists eds. of 1808, 1811 (reissue of 1808, no maps changes other than the 1811 date appearing on some of the maps), 1819 (one third of the maps amended), 1824 (maps unchanged from 1819 except for the date), 1828 (same as 1824, except for date changes, with reissues in 1833, 1836 (Baskes), and 1844). This is a fine atlas, one of the best of its period, and a source for American mapmakers (Tanner directly copied the World and continental maps for his New American Atlas). Fordham: (The maps) "are finely engraved, with full details, showing especially the water-ways and roads, and hill-shading, and are usually coloured. The work is very clear and delicate and of a uniform character throughout." Maps are hand painted in outline color and bound in half leather brown boards with "Cary's Atlas. 1808" stamped in gilt on the new leather spine. Phillips, 714; Fordham, J.C. The maps bear the copyright and imprint of Charles Desilver 714 Chesnut Street. Changes from the 1859 edition includes a new map of Pennsylvania, two double page maps - map of Kansas by W.H. This is a fine atlas, one of the best of its period, and a source for American mapmakers (Tanner directly copied the World and continental maps for his New American Atlas). Fordham: (The maps) "are finely engraved, with full details, showing especially the water-ways and roads, and hill-shading, and are usually coloured. The work is very clear and delicate and of a uniform character throughout." Atlas containing very detailed maps of the world with an emphasis on Europe, but with several important maps showing the Americas, Asia, Africa and Australia. Most of the maps have a small vignette illustrating a feature of the region. This large general atlas by Wyld is far more rare than his smaller general atlas of 1824, see our 2713.000

" Maps are copper engraved by the Oxford engravers M. Burghers, R. Spofforth, Benjamin Cole and Sutton Nicholls. The atlas contains, in most cases, two of each map to compare the ancient and modern configurations. Showing boundaries, major cities and towns, rivers, mountains, churches and fortifications. Each map carries a dedication "To his Highness William Duke of Gloucester." The maps are highly decorative, with elaborate title cartouches surrounded by coats of arms, putti, or allegorical figures. The two world maps feature the island of California, a partially explored Australia, and numerous notations of parts as yet undiscovered. The Americas stand on their own, with a single map each for North America and South America, as well as one for the English Plantations in America. The map of North America also depicts the island of California and Florida encompasses the entire south. This edition is similar to the first edition of 1700 but has a different title page and several of the maps have been updated. Publication Date is estimated to be circa 1710, while the date of each map is given as 1700 when they were originally published. The Oxford scholar Wells produced these maps for the education of his young pupil William, Duke of Gloucester, the son of Queen Anne and George, Prince of Denmark. William suffered from encephalitis and died in 1700 at the age of eleven. Wells dedicated and published the atlas as a tribute to the Duke.
