The Honourable Premier Rachel Notley has graciously made herself available to Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs (SACPA) for a speaking event. After 50 years of trying, SACPA is very happy to finally host a sitting Premier of Alberta. Rachel previously spoke at SACPA in 2011 and 2014 as an MLA.Premier Notley will explain some of the items in last week's Alberta budget and the importance of pipelines and transportation in getting Alberta resources to tidewater. She will also give the audience her view of Alberta's political landscape. Having grown up in a passionate political family that believed in the importance of building a fairer, more inclusive society, Rachel was naturally drawn to work to make her home province better, and first ran for election for the Alberta New Democrats in Edmonton-Strathcona in 2008. She was re-elected in 2012 and again in 2015.Rachel holds a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Alberta, and a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. She has worked for a variety of labour unions in both Alberta and British Columbia and served as a ministerial advisor to British Columbia's Attorney General in the 1990s. Systems-level neuroscience lacks a formal theoretical structure, relying on argumentation based on experimental findings expressed in the primary literature. Theoretical models may typically be represented as summary diagrams in a paper’s discussion. Within a subject as complex and multifaceted as neuroscience, this lack of formalization leads inevitably to problems of information overload for individual researchers as it is a significant challenge to manage and manipulate large volumes of information from a distributed resource such as the literature and scientists’ own individual records. We present ‘NeuroScholar’, a knowledge base desktop application that specifically targets literature- and laboratory-based information, providing a structured knowledge engineering approach for neuroscience. It provides a general object-oriented data model to encapsulate complex data into entities, and a graph-theoretical approach that represents relations between entities edges between nodes in a graph. The system has frameworks for unit testing, plugins (to embed external applications within NeuroScholar), proxies (to export NeuroScholar’s knowledge management capabilities to external applications) and knowledge acquisition based on questionnaires. Specialized plugins include (a) an annotation mechanism for pdf files (built with Multivalent, a third party library), (b) an electronic laboratory notebook component, (c) an annotation mechanism for vector graphics and (d) NeuARt, a neuroanatomical data viewer based on standard atlases which can also use the proxy framework to act as a standalone neuroanatomical data management tool. The knowledge acquisition subsystem provides an easy way to link free-form document annotation with structured knowledge representations for specific types of experiment. We are applying the system directly in two systems-level neuroscience laboratories, one focused on neuroanatomy, the other on neuroendocrinology. It is anticipated that NeuroScholar may provide a platform for theoretical research in neuroscience by delivering knowledge engineering capabilities directly to experimental scientists to facilitate analysis and communication. ©2005 Microsoft Corporation. Social neuroscience has rapidly advanced by uncovering the biological bases of human social behavior, with foundational work emphasizing the need for multilevel and dynamic approaches to social cognition (Cacioppo & Berntson, 1992; Ochsner & Lieberman, 2001). Traditionally, research focused on isolated, observational paradigms, limiting ecological validity. Recent methodological innovations, notably the emergence of second-person neuroscience, have shifted the field toward studying real-time, reciprocal social interactions (Redcay & Schilbach, 2019; Schilbach, 2022). This approach leverages tools such as hyperscanning and portable neuroimaging (e.g., fNIRS, EEG, dual-fMRI), enabling the investigation of neural synchronization and coordination between individuals during authentic social exchanges. The present review synthesizes how core social affect and cognitive processes—such as emotional reciprocity, joint attention, interpersonal coordination, empathy, and theory of mind—are operationalized in interactive, ecologically valid paradigms. We systematically examine (1) the range of social affect and cognitive processes and task types studied in second-person neuroscience, (2) the diversity of interactive paradigms employed, (3) the neuroimaging modalities used to capture dynamic social interaction, and (4) the underlying neural mechanisms during social interaction. Furthermore, we assess whether different imaging modalities provide unique or complementary insights into these processes. By bridging laboratory paradigms with real-world social functioning, this review clarifies how methodological and contextual factors shape our understanding of social cognition, with implications for mental disorders characterized by social deficits. Our integrative approach advances the field by highlighting both conceptual and technical frontiers in the study of interactive social neuroscience.

Multi-electrode neurophysiological recordings produce massive quantities of data. Multivariate time series analysis provides the basic framework for analyzing the patterns of neural interactions in these data. It has long been recognized that neural interactions are directional. Being able to assess the directionality of neuronal interactions is thus a highly desired capability for understanding the cooperative nature of neural computation. Research over the last few years has shown that Granger causality is a key technique to furnish this capability. The main goal of this article is to provide an expository introduction to the concept of Granger causality. Mathematical frameworks for both bivariate Granger causality and conditional Granger causality are developed in detail with particular emphasis on their spectral representations. The technique is demonstrated in numerical examples where the exact answers of causal influences are known. It is then applied to analyze multichannel local field potentials recorded from monkeys performing a visuomotor task. Our results are shown to be physiologically interpretable and yield new insights into the dynamical organization of large-scale oscillatory cortical networks.

This experimental setup can be used in simple experiments in which students monitor the bilayer formation by capacitance measurement and record unitary currents produced by ionic channels like gramicidin A. Used in combination with a low-cost data acquisition board this system provides a complete solution for hands-on lessons, therefore improving the effectiveness in teaching basic neurosciences or biophysics.

Motivated by recent experiments in neuroscience which indicate that neuronal avalanches exhibit scale invariant behavior similar to self-organized critical systems, we study the role of noisy (non-conservative) local dynamics on the critical behavior of a sandpile model which can be taken to mimic the dynamics of neuronal avalanches. We find that despite the fact that noise breaks the strict local conservation required to attain criticality, our system exhibit true criticality for a wide range of noise in various dimensions, given that conservation is respected \textit{on the average}. Although the system remains critical, exhibiting finite-size scaling, the value of critical exponents change depending on the intensity of local noise. Interestingly, for sufficiently strong noise level, the critical exponents approach and saturate at their mean-field values, consistent with empirical measurements of neuronal avalanches. This is confirmed for both two and three dimensional models. However, addition of noise does not affect the exponents at the upper critical dimension ($D=4$). In addition to extensive finite-size scaling analysis of our systems, we also employ a useful time-series analysis method in order to establish true criticality of noisy systems. Finally, we discuss the implications of our work in neuroscience as well as some implications for general phenomena of criticality in non-equilibrium systems.

Studies on developmental disorders extensively rely on the use of laboratory rodents. The present mini-review proposes an alternative translational model based on the use of fetal bovine brain tissue. The bovine (Bos taurus) possesses a large and highly gyrencephalic brain and the long gestation period (41 weeks) is comparable to human pregnancy (38–40 weeks). Primary cultures obtained from fetal bovine brain constitute a validated in vitro model that allows examinations of neurons and/or glial cells under controlled and reproducible conditions. Physiological processes can be also studied on cultured bovine neural cells incubated with specific substrates or by electrically coupled electrolyte-oxide-semiconductor capacitors that permit direct recording from neuronal cells. Bovine neural cells and specific in vitro cell culture could be an alternative in comparative neuroscience and in neurodegenerative research, useful for studying development of normal and altered circuitry in a long gestation mammalian species. Use of bovine tissues would promote a substantial reduction in the use of laboratory animals.

Abstract Adult speech perception reflects the long-term regularities of the native language, but it is also flexible such that it accommodates and adapts to adverse listening conditions and short-term deviations from native-language norms. The purpose of this article is to examine how the broader neuroscience literature can inform and advance research efforts in understanding the neural basis of flexibility and adaptive plasticity in speech perception. Specifically, we highlight the potential role of learning algorithms that rely on prediction error signals and discuss specific neural structures that are likely to contribute to such learning. To this end, we review behavioral studies, computational accounts, and neuroimaging findings related to adaptive plasticity in speech perception. Already, a few studies have alluded to a potential role of these mechanisms in adaptive plasticity in speech perception. Furthermore, we consider research topics in neuroscience that offer insight into how perception can be adaptively tuned to short-term deviations while balancing the need to maintain stability in the perception of learned long-term regularities. Consideration of the application and limitations of these algorithms in characterizing flexible speech perception under adverse conditions promises to inform theoretical models of speech.

Abstract Social cognitive neuroscience (SCN) seeks to understand the brain mechanisms through which we comprehend others’ emotions and intentions in order to react accordingly. For decades, SCN has explored relevant domains by exposing individual participants to predesigned stimuli and asking them to judge their social (e.g., emotional) content. Subjects are thus reduced to detached observers of situations that they play no active role in. However, the core of our social experience is construed through real-time interactions requiring the active negotiation of information with other people. To gain more relevant insights into the workings of the social brain, the incipient field of two-person neuroscience (2PN) advocates the study of brain-to-brain coupling through multi-participant experiments. In this paper, we argue that the study of online language-based communication constitutes a cornerstone of 2PN. First, we review preliminary evidence illustrating how verbal interaction may shed light on the social brain. Second, we advance methodological recommendations to design experiments within language-based 2PN. Finally, we formulate outstanding questions for future research.

To gain more relevant insights into the workings of the social brain, the incipient field of two-person neuroscience (2PN) advocates the study of brain-to-brain coupling through multi-participant experiments. In this paper, we argue that the study of online language-based communication constitutes a cornerstone of 2PN. First, we review preliminary evidence illustrating how verbal interaction may shed light on the social brain. Second, we advance methodological recommendations to design experiments within language-based 2PN. Finally, we formulate outstanding questions for future research.

Cross-frequency coupling (CFC) has been proposed to coordinate neural dynamics across spatial and temporal scales. Despite its potential relevance for understanding healthy and pathological brain function, the standard CFC analysis and physiological interpretation come with fundamental problems. For example, apparent CFC can appear because of spectral correlations due to common non-stationarities that may arise in the total absence of interactions between neural frequency components. To provide a road map towards an improved mechanistic understanding of CFC, we organize the available and potential novel statistical/modeling approaches according to their biophysical interpretability. While we do not provide solutions for all the problems described, we provide a list of practical recommendations to avoid common errors and to enhance the interpretability of CFC analysis.

Hearing the baroness's deathbed confession, Father Philip notices her Bible. As he carries it to the Lord Abbot, it is taken from him by a White Lady. A sub-prior investigates this story and finds that the Bible is now back in the owner's hands. Later, Elspeth's son sees the White Lady when he snatches the Bible from a flaming altar. Intrigue follows intrigue. Halbert and Sir Piercie Shafton fight, and Halbert flees, leaving Sir Piercie mortally wounded. Shafton, however, recovers only to be accused of murdering Edward's missing brother. Mysie helps Shafton escape from jail. Edward has vowed to become a monk at the urging of the White Lady. After a battle between English and Scottish soldiers against Sir John's troops, Mysie is declared a suitable wife for Sir Piercie. The monks are allowed to keep their monastery. The Black Dwarf is the first of the “Tales of My Landlord” series, which also includes The Bride of Lammermoor and The Heart of Midlothian. The third preliminary chapter depicts two horsemen arriving at the Wallace Inn in Gandercleugh, where one of the horsemen relates the tale. The story proper is set on the Scottish borders during the reign of Queen Anne. The Jacobite movement is in its infancy, but the inhabitants of this part of the country have enough to quarrel about without politics inciting them to it. Several families of high and low birth bear no good intentions to each other, and a weird, brooding dwarf, who wishes ill on all of humanity, seems to direct and perpetuate the mayhem from his lonely cottage on Mucklestane Moor.
