Co-Principal Investigators Jessica Bellamy and Josh Poe share their work connecting data justice, housing justice, and abolition and discuss their practice of accountability and accompaniment, and subversive intellectualism in the South. Jessica Bellamy is an award-winning international speaker, workshop facilitator, motion infographic designer, and research analyst. She and her colleague Josh Poe are the founders of the Root Cause Research Center which is a grassroots-led institution that collects data, creates data visuals, and trains impacted community members in research and data storytelling. Jessica's research career began at the University of Louisville's Neurodevelopmental Science Lab, where she worked for nearly five years. She later used her training as a research analyst, as well as her training in community organizing and graphic design to start GRIDS: The Grassroots Information Design Studio, which was a social enterprise that combined all three skill sets to benefit social initiatives. Josh Poe is the co-founder and Co-Principal Investigator at the Root Cause Research Center here in Louisville. Purpose of the Study: The primary purpose of this study is to systematically examine the psychological mechanisms through which rape myth acceptance influences perceptions of sexual assault perpetrators and the assignment of blame. We hypothesize that individuals endorsing higher levels of rape myths will be more likely to dehumanize sexual aggressors, particularly through an "animalistic" lens, and that this dehumanization will, in turn, lead to a reduction in the blame attributed to the aggressor. This research seeks to provide empirical evidence for these theoretical pathways, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of the cognitive and attitudinal factors that underpin responses to sexual assault. Hypotheses: Hypothesis 1: Higher levels of rape myth acceptance will be associated with less blame attributed to the sexual aggressor. Hypothesis 2: Higher levels of rape myth acceptance will be associated with greater animalistic dehumanization of the sexual aggressor. Hypothesis 3: Greater animalistic dehumanization of the sexual aggressor will be associated with less blame attributed to the sexual aggressor. Study Design and Methodology: This project will utilize a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design. Participants will be currently enrolled university students aged 18 or older. The study will be administered online via Qualtrics and is anticipated to take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Participation is entirely voluntary and anonymous, with no identifying information collected. Measures: The survey will include several established psychological scales to measure the constructs of interest: Demographic Information: Basic demographic information, including gender identity, age, racial/ethnic group, and highest level of education completed, will be collected. Social Desirability: A measure of social desirability will be included using a Likert-scale format, asking participants to express agreement or disagreement with statements on a scale of 1 ("not true") to 7 ("very true"). This section includes statements such as "When I hear people talking privately, I avoid listening," "I never take things that don't belong to me," and "I don't gossip about other people's business". Rape Myth Acceptance (RMA): RMA will be assessed using Likert-scale items ranging from 1 ("strongly disagree") to 7 ("strongly agree"). Items will assess beliefs such as "In a custody battle, women often allege that their ex-husband has been sexually violent," "Many women like to submit to the sexual wishes of men," and "These days, a large number of rape accusations are false". Dehumanization (Ascent-to-Man Scale): Participants will be asked to indicate "How much do you see Jason as fully human or developed, based on your overall impression?" on a scale of 0-100, accompanied by an image depicting the "Ascent of Man". Dehumanization (Human Uniqueness Traits & Animalistic Traits): Participants will rate the extent to which various words describe the man in the scenario on a scale of 1 ("not at all") to 7 ("very much"). Examples include "Creature," "Humanity," "Person," "Beast," "Animal," "People," "Civilian," and "Mongrel". Additionally, participants will rate statements such as "I feel like Jason, the man in the story, was refined and cultured," "I feel like Jason, the man in the story, was rational and logical, like he was intelligent," "I feel Jason, the man in the story, lacked self-restraint, like an animal," and "I feel Jason, the man in the story, was unsophisticated" on a scale of 1 ("not at all") to 7 ("very much"). Blame Assigned to the Sexual Aggressor: Following a fictional vignette involving a sexual assault scenario, participants will answer questions about their impressions of the situation and the people involved. Blame attribution will be measured using Likert-scale items ranging from 1 ("strongly disagree") to 7 ("strongly agree"). Example statements include "The man in this story cannot be blamed for what happened," "This incident was the man’s fault," "The man’s behaviour was to blame for what he did," and "Jason should be blamed for his actions?". Vignette: Participants will read a short vignette describing an interaction between a man (Jason) and a woman (Alexa) that culminates in a non-consensual sexual act. This vignette is designed to elicit perceptions and judgments related to sexual assault scenarios. Expected Outcomes: Based on our hypotheses, we expect to find that: Endorsement of rape myths will be negatively correlated with the degree of blame attributed to the sexual aggressor. Higher rape myth acceptance will predict greater animalistic dehumanization of the perpetrator. Animalistic dehumanization of the perpetrator will, in turn, predict lower levels of blame attributed to the sexual aggressor.

If everyone knows what attention is, all psychologists know what the Stroop effect is : it is the interference of the automatic reading of an incongruent (i.e., BLUE in red) word on the more controlled process of color naming. This overlap would also explain why congruent (i.e., BLUE in blue) color naming items are faster. Twenty years before Stroop, Brown in 1915 showed that color naming times are slower for congruent items than neutral items and rejected the hypothesis of reading overlapping on color naming. To disentangle these opposed theoretical approaches, we analyzed the protocol and highlighted an original violation of its internal validity. There are two parasit variables in the Stroop task (i.e., item set size and familiarity of the association between item dimensions). After restoring the internal validity of the task, we will then analyse the simple effect of (1) the support of the color (a name of color vs. a string) of (2) the familiaritiy of the association between the color and the support (familiar vs. unfamiliar), (3) and the interaction between the support and the familiarity on the correct color naming response times.
