2DTIC ADA632372: Graph-Theoretic Statistical Methods For Detecting And Localizing Distributional Change In Multivariate Data
By Defense Technical Information Center
This dissertation explores the topic of detecting and localizing change in a series of multivariate data using graphtheoretic statistical criteria. Change-detection methods based on graph theory are emerging due to their ability to detect change of a general nature with desirable power properties. The graph-theoretic structures of minimum nonbipartite matching and nearest neighbors according to distances between observations form the basis of our statistical procedures. We consider the computation time to implement the procedures with the detection power of the derived statistics. In a simulation study, we evaluate the power of our proposed statistical tests in a series of vignettes in which the sampling distribution, dimensionality, change parameter (location or scale), change type (abrupt or gradual), and change magnitude each are allowed to vary. We compare detection power with contemporary parametric and graphtheoretic approaches. Although our tests alone do not provide the information needed to localize a change point, we develop a follow-on procedure that satisfies this objective. We illustrate our proposed statistical tests and changepoint localization techniques in an application, which demonstrates how several of the apparent limitations of our approach can be surmounted.

6DTIC ADA470074: A Comparative Analysis Of Multivariate Statistical Detection Methods Applied To Syndromic Surveillance
By Defense Technical Information Center
Biological terrorism is a threat to the security and well-being of the United States. It is critical to detect the presence of these attacks in a timely manner so that emergency services can provide sufficient and effective responses to minimize or contain the damage inflicted. Syndromic surveillance is the process of monitoring public health-related data and applying statistical tests to determine the potential presence of a disease outbreak in the observed system. This research involved a comparative analysis of two multivariate statistical methods: the multivariate cumulative sum (MCUSUM) and the multivariate exponentially weighted moving average (MEWMA), both modified to look only for increases in disease incidence. While neither of these methods is currently in use in a biosurveillance system, they are among the most promising multivariate methods for this application. This analysis was based on a series of simulations using synthetic syndromic surveillance data that mimics various types of background disease incidence and outbreaks. The authors found that, similar to results for the univariate CUSUM and EWMA, the directionally sensitive MCUSUM and MEWMA perform very similarly.

7DTIC ADA422798: Isotope Ratio Spectrometry Data Processing Software: Multivariate Statistical Methods For Hydrocarbon Source Identification And Comparison
By Defense Technical Information Center
The IRMS Data Processing software package is designed to allow easy stable isotope data entry and multivariate data analysis. When comparing two of more hydrocarbon samples using compound-specific isotope ratio mass spectrometry, an analyst obtains multiple data variables for each sample. Multivariate statistics allows rigorous comparison(s) to determine if the samples are in fact different and if so, how closely related they are. This software uses three main types of data analyses: Multiple Analysis of Variance (MAN0VA), Principal Components Analysis (PCA), and Cluster Analysis. The layout is a standard Windows interface which should be usable to anyone familiar with modem operating system software.

8Multivariate Statistical Machine Learning Methods For Genomic Prediction
This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license This open access book brings together the latest genome base prediction models currently being used by statisticians, breeders and data scientists. It provides an accessible way to understand the theory behind each statistical learning tool, the required pre-processing, the basics of model building, how to train statistical learning methods, the basic R scripts needed to implement each statistical learning tool, and the output of each tool. To do so, for each tool the book provides background theory, some elements of the R statistical software for its implementation, the conceptual underpinnings, and at least two illustrative examples with data from real-world genomic selection experiments. Lastly, worked-out examples help readers check their own comprehension. The book will greatly appeal to readers in plant (and animal) breeding, geneticists and statisticians, as it provides in a very accessible way the necessary theory, the appropriate R code, and illustrative examples for a complete understanding of each statistical learning tool. In addition, it weighs the advantages and disadvantages of each tool.

16A Comparative Analysis Of Multivariate Statistical Detection Methods Applied To Syndromic Surveillance
By Matthew C. Knitt.
Biological terrorism is a threat to the security and well-being of the United States. It is critical to detect the presence of these attacks in a timely manner, in order to provide sufficient and effective responses to minimize or contain the damage inflicted. Syndromic surveillance is the process of monitoring public health-related data and applying statistical tests to determine the potential presence of a disease outbreak in the observed system. Our research involved a comparative analysis of two multivariate statistical methods, the multivariate CUSUM (MCUSUM) and the multivariate exponentially weighted moving average (MEWMA), both modified to look only for increases in disease incidence. While neither of these methods is currently in use in a biosurveillance system, they are among the most promising multivariate methods for this application. Our analysis was based on a series of simulations using synthetic syndromic surveillance data that mimics various types of background disease incidence and outbreaks. We found that, similar to results for the univariate CUSUM and EWMA, the directionally-sensitive MCUSUM and MEWMA perform very similarly.

20Graph-theoretic Statistical Methods For Detecting And Localizing Distributional Change In Multivariate Data
By Hawks, Matthew A.
This dissertation explores the topic of detecting and localizing change in a series of multivariate data using graph-theoretic statistical criteria. Change-detection methods based on graph theory are emerging due to their ability to detect change of a general nature with desirable power properties. The graph-theoretic structures of minimum non-bipartite matching and nearest neighbors according to distances between observations form the basis of our statistical procedures. We compare detection power with contemporary parametric and graph-theoretic approaches. Although our tests alone do not provide the information needed to localize a change point, we develop a follow-on procedure that satisfies this objective. We illustrate our proposed statistical tests and change-point localization techniques in an application, which demonstrates how several of the apparent limitations of our approach can be surmounted.

5Martin Hewitt, Investigator
By Arthur Morrison

Here are seven mystery stories featuring Martin Hewitt, Detective, and narrated (of course) by his (nameless) sidekick. Arthur Morrison certainly has imagination, as shown by the very wide range of situations, motivations, crimes and characters he presents in these stories. Hewitt may be after a Russian spy or a domestic animal; he investigates the burglary of documents vital to national security, but also the destruction of a work of art -- which is counterfeit. 6Stories by English Authors: London
By F. Anstey, J. M. Barrie, Marie Corelli, Beatrice Harraden, Arthur Morrison, Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch and Israel Zangwill

This book collects seven short stories by some of England's best turn-of-the-(last)-century's writers. The collection begins with the humor of J. M. Barrie, of Peter Pan fame. A later and equally humorous story is by Israel Zangwill, also widely known for his exposures of social and economic problems. The immensely popular Marie Corelli’s contribution is the last, and among the most moving. (NB: Though a less prominent writer than some represented here, Corelli was so popular that her literary sales exceeded those of Arthur Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells and Rudyard Kipling – combined.) </br> In short, these writers offer great variety as to style, tone and topic, ranging from breezy tales to poignant proofs of the kindness and grace that can underlie the deepest tragedies. But while diverse, these writers have in common that they clearly know and clearly express genuine emotional truth. They hold our attention by conveying their stories honestly. They have no need for the tricks and devices of melodrama, shallow emotionalism, or shocking plot twists. </br> This accomplishment – this evidence of high literary quality – is all the more impressive in historical and social context. They lived in a time of widespread suffering. Yet even as most of these writers begin by drawing our attention to terrible and extensive suffering (and go on by holding it there), they end by keeping our attention in writing clearly and convincingly about important things they really know - leaving us moved, convinced, and a little richer for the experience.</br> - Summary by Kirsten Wever

7Dorrington Deed-Box
By Arthur Morrison

Six stories of cases involving the dishonest Horace Dorrington, a cheerfully unrepentant detective who is willing to stoop to theft, blackmail, fraud or cold-blooded murder to make a shilling. The first story describes how Dorrington is forced to go on the run after unsuccessfully trying to kill one of his own clients. The stories are narrated by the person he tried to kill, from records found in Dorrington’s office after his hurried escape. - Summary by TriciaG
