1ERIC ED456152: Emergent Entities And Emergent Processes: Constructing Emergence Through Multi-Agent Programming.

By

The use of programming language was studied in an eighth grade science classroom. The goal of the EMERGE curriculum is to enable students to understand the global patterns that they observe. EMERGE was used in an eighth-grade classroom of 12 students, with a range of abilities (3 had learning disabilities), in 21 sessions over 3 months. For the project, the teacher and project staff developed a unit using StarLogo/T and NetLogo as representational tools to focus on the ideas of complexity, parallel processes, and emergent phenomena. Several vignettes are presented to illustrate the implementation of the EMERGE curriculum and the students' use of the programming language. The study findings show that all the students were able to progress in a relatively short time from building simple multi-agent models to more sophisticated models that engaged the class in extended inquiry activities. Their sophistication in describing emergent phenomena, levels of organization and description, randomness and variability, and traditional population dynamics showed marked gains. It appears that learning the programming language together with the subject matter was easier than learning either alone. (Contains 18 references and 4 figures.) (SLD)

5Evaluation Of A Conversation Management Toolkit For Multi Agent Programming

By

The Agent Conversation Reasoning Engine (ACRE) is intended to aid agent developers to improve the management and reliability of agent communication. To evaluate its effectiveness, a problem scenario was created that could be used to compare code written with and without the use of ACRE by groups of test subjects. This paper describes the requirements that the evaluation scenario was intended to meet and how these motivated the design of the problem. Two experiments were conducted with two separate sets of students and their solutions were analysed using a combination of simple objective metrics and subjective analysis. The analysis suggested that ACRE by default prevents some common problems arising that would limit the reliability and extensibility of conversation-handling code. As ACRE has to date been integrated only with the Agent Factory multi agent framework, it was necessary to verify that the problems identified are not unique to that platform. Thus a comparison was made with best practice communication code written for the Jason platform, in order to demonstrate the wider applicability of a system such as ACRE.

6DTIC ADA409970: Multi-Agent Control And Intelligent Sensor Allocation With Reinforcement Learning And Genetic Programming

By

This project investigated the use of decentralized strategies for control of UAV and UGV swarms. During the first few months we developed an agent-based model of UAVs searching for targets in a pre-determined search area. We tested a variety of control and navigation strategies, including some based on biological principles. Subsequently we develop a second simulator, focusing on the problem of a team of pursuers trying to capture an evader in a 2-D urban environment. The simulator included control strategies for the evader and the pursuers, as well as an interactive world editor for creation of arbitrary urban environments. We used this simulator to run Monte Carlo simulations, obtaining some preliminary statistics on performance of the evader and pursuer strategies.

7DTIC ADA329826: Communication And Coordination In Multi-Agent Systems: Agent-Oriented Programming And Computational Social Laws.

By

Agent oriented programming was proposed as a high-level programming language, in which a programmer is given the opportunity to communicate with other programs in a uniform, high-level language. Furthermore, the programmer could explicitly represent in the program (or 'agent') the relationship with other program (or 'agent'), including the beliefs about the other agents and the obligations made to them. Our hypothesis was that such 'mental-level' design would provide a powerful abstraction that would enable the analysis and even design of complex distributed systems. In addition to such coordination via high-level modeling and communication, we were interested in global mechanisms that eliminate the need for explicit coordination in the place.
