1Mozambique Is Struggling To Recover From Cyclone Idai (HBO)

By

BEIRA, Mozambique — Hundreds of thousands of people are still without food, clean water or homes almost two weeks after Cyclone Idai tore through Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi, killing at least 700 people and impacting millions more. Now, the first outbreak of cholera has been reported, sparking fears that this disaster recovery will soon become a long-term health emergency. The cyclone hit the port city of Beira at midnight on March 14, bringing winds of 125mph and torrential storms that burst the banks of two major rivers and flooded an area covering more than 1,600 square miles. A major international aid operation is now underway in Beira as waters begin to recede. But villagers in the hardest hit communities remain stranded while relief efforts struggle to reach them on roads decimated in the disaster. A lack of helicopters in the country has further hobbled response efforts. More than 100,000 people are now living in refugee camps. Many others are taking shelter in schools, churches and orphanages; their over-crowded temporary homes surrounded by pools of putrid flood water, which some are still using to drink and wash. Ignasio Augusto’s home, in the coastal village of Praia Nova, was decimated by the storm. “Nothing is left. The house fell down,” Ignasio said. He’s now sheltering with his family, packed alongside hundreds of others, in an elementary school which was itself partially destroyed by the winds. “This is how we sleep,” he said, pointing to the small plot of floor his family now occupies. “On sleeping bags, on the pavement. Women and men together,” Ignasio said. The cyclone’s destruction is breathtaking: Whole towns are flooded, roads are blocked by mud and bridges are ruined. The destruction stretches as far inland as Gôndola, more than 120 miles from the epicenter of the crisis. Even this far from the eye of the storm, the rains have made access slow or impossible. An aid team attempting to survey the damage using drones was stricken by mud during our journey. It took four hours of digging by men from a nearby town to free their 4x4 from the water. Only in the past few days has it become possible to pass — slowly — along the battered road to Beira Airport, which has become the makeshift headquarters of the international aid operation. Villagers here are facing the same problems as the hardest hit communities on the coast: food is not being delivered; supplies are not reaching them fast enough. Gerald Bourke, from the United Nations World Food Programme, told VICE News that despite the obstacles, the recovery is slowly coming together. “It’s gathering pace, but we need to do a lot more and we need to accelerate,” he said. But it could take several months to establish the true death toll and longer term impact of this storm on crops and food supplies. For now, the priority remains survival. “It has been difficult to get out there. You have communities who have been isolated for a long time. The full dimensions of it have yet to become clear.” Subscribe to VICE News here: [URL REMOVED] Check out VICE News for more: [URL REMOVED] Follow VICE News here: Facebook: [URL REMOVED] Twitter: [URL REMOVED] Tumblr: [URL REMOVED] Instagram: [URL REMOVED] More videos from the VICE network: [URL REMOVED]

10CIA Reading Room Cia-rdp84b00049r001403440027-2: MOZAMBIQUE: INSURGENCY EXPANDS

By

Approved For Release 2007/04/24 : CIA-RDP84B00049R00140344002-2 MOZAMBIQUE: Insurgency Expands The South African - backed National Resistance Move- ment has expanded operations from central and southern Mozambique to the north. The apparent shift of substan- tial numbers of insurgents has met little resistance from the Mozambican military, which is stretched thin in the north. Recent military reports suggest that the govt man-1- is lanning to reinforce its garrisons there. Comment: The guerrillas' ability to move into a new area suggests that South Africa has stepped up its aid. The expansion of insurgent operations in the relatively populous northern region increases the likelihood that President Machel will feel compelled to request combat forces from neighboring Tanzania and perhaps from Cuba. 9 September 1982 Approved For Release 2007/04/24: CIA-RDP84B00049R001403440027-2

12Tropical Cyclone Japhet (19S) Off Mozambique

By

Tropical Cyclone Japhet (19S) is shown in these true-color Terra and Aqua MODIS images. On Feb. 26, the storm is swirling in between Mozambique, on the left, and the island nation of Madagascar on February 26, 2003. When the first image was acquired, this storm was relatively young, though it was expected to grow into Category 1 cyclone (with 75 knot/86 mph winds). At the time this image was acquired, Japhet was a Tropical Storm with 35-knot winds, which is just above the threshold for being considered a Tropical Depression, the lowest level, organized-storm system category. One interesting feature of Japhet is that it was expected to move very little over the course of its life: less than 2 degrees latitudinally and just over 6 degrees longitudinally toward the Mozambique coast. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 2/28/03. Data End Date: 2/28/03.

Document number CIA-RDP90-00845R000100160044-2 declassified and released through the CIA's CREST database. Previously available only on four computers located outside of Washington D.C., the Agency was successfully pressured into putting the files online as a result of a MuckRock lawsuit and the efforts of Emma Best. The metadata was collected by Data.World, and the files are now being archived and made text searchable by the Internet Archive.

23Cyclone Dera In The Mozambique Channel

By

The Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS, flying aboard OrbView-2) saw Tropical Cyclone Dera shortly after it formed today (March 9, 2001) over the Mozambique Channel. Mozambique is visible to the left of the storm, and the island of Madagascar is partially visible on the right side of the storm. In the high-resolution image you can see the Zambeze River in Mozambique, which has been flooded in recent weeks. The signature brownish plumes of sediment discharge from the Zambeze into the channel are visible at several places along Mozambique's coastline.According to the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Cyclone Dera now has sustained winds of 55 knots (about 63 mph or 102 km per hour), with gusts of up to 70 knots (81 mph or 130 km per hour). The storm is moving in a south-southeasterly direction at about 14 knots (16 mph or 26 km per hour). The storm is predicted to continue intensifying over the next 24 hours and should continue heading in a southerly direction. Sensor: OrbView-2/SeaWiFS. Data Start Date: 3/9/01.

By

Zoomable full resolution image available at davidrumsey.com . This image 2212.193 is a part of image group 2212.000 . Hand col. lithographed map. Relief shown by pictorially. Prime meridian: Paris. A complete set of the six volume Atlas Universel in original bindings of half red leather teal cloth covered boards with title "Vandermaelen. Atlas Universel..." embossed in gold on the spine. This monumental work was the first atlas of the world with all maps on the same scale (and a large scale at that - about one inch to 26 miles) and the first lithographed world atlas. If all the maps were joined together they would form a globe of 7.75 meters in diameter (such a globe was made in Brussels). The maps were published originally in parts of ten maps each, beginning in 1825 and ending in 1827. Vandermaelen's maps are frequently misunderstood because each map is usually best comprehended in the context of its neighboring maps - the maps do not function well on their own, since they were all meant to be joined. Koeman states that "His atlases, although unique in concept and size did not possess that fine touch of cartographic style which make them attractive for a collector..." We strongly disagree - the graphic art of the maps must be appreciated in the context of lithography, a developing art at the time; as lithographs, they are very well done. For many of the areas depicted, these maps are the largest scale maps made at the time, and the most detailed (particularly in the American West). Maps are hand painted in outline color. Phillips, 749; Koeman Vdm 1; National Maritime Museum, 179; Wellens-De Donder, L. Philippe Vandermaelen 1795-1869, 4-5.

36Non-communicable Diseases In Mozambique: Risk Factors, Burden, Response And Outcomes To Date.

By

This article is from Globalization and Health , volume 8 . Abstract Mozambique is located on the East Coast of Africa bordering South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania and is one of the poorest countries in the world. Currently NCDs account for 28% of deaths in Mozambique. Risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use and poor diet are present in both urban and rural settings. Diseases such as hypertension and diabetes affect large proportions of the population, but people are often unaware of their condition or poorly managed. Data from studies on diabetes highlight the financial burden for NCD management in Mozambique for both the individual and health system. The National Strategic Plan for the prevention and control of NCDs in Mozambique has as its aim to create a positive environment to minimise or eliminate the exposure to risk factors and guarantee access to care. The plan has as its overall objective to reduce exposure to risk factors and morbidity and mortality due to NCDs and has 4 areas of intervention: 1) Prevention and health education with regards to NCDs; 2) Access to quality care, treatment and follow-up; 3) Prevention of disability and premature mortality and 4) Surveillance, research, monitoring and evaluation and advocacy for NCDs. The Ministry of Health developed projects for diabetes and hypertension and used these as key lessons that could then be applied to other NCDs. Mozambique, through political commitment from the Ministry of Health and the dedication of local champions, has been able to garner international support to improve care for people with diabetes and then use this to develop its National Plan for NCDs. Despite this increase in attention resources available do not match the challenge of NCDs in Mozambique. Mozambique’s experience provides a practical example of actions that can be undertaken in a resource poor country to tackle the emerging burden of NCDs.

37Netting Barriers To Prevent Mosquito Entry Into Houses In Southern Mozambique: A Pilot Study.

By

This article is from Malaria Journal , volume 12 . Abstract Background: One of the best ways to control the transmission of malaria is by breaking the vector-human link, either by reducing the effective population size of mosquitoes or avoiding infective bites. Reducing house entry rates in endophagic vectors by obstructing openings is one simple way of achieving this. Mosquito netting has previously been shown to have this effect. More recently different materials that could also be used have come onto the market. Therefore, a pilot study was conducted to investigate the protective effect of three types of material against Anopheles funestus and Anopheles gambiae s.l entry into village houses in Mozambique when applied over the large opening at the gables and both gables and eaves. Methods: A two-step intervention was implemented in which the gable ends of houses (the largest opening) were covered with one of three materials (four year old mosquito bed nets; locally purchased untreated shade cloth or deltamethrin-impregnated shade cloth) followed by covering both gable ends and eaves with material. Four experimental rounds (each of three weeks duration), from four houses randomly assigned to be a control or to receive one of the three intervention materials, were undertaken from March to August 2010 in the village of Furvela in southern Mozambique. Mosquito entry rates were assessed by light-trap collection and the efficacy of the different materials was determined in terms of incidence rate ratio (IRR), obtained through a Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE), of mosquito entry in a treated house compared to the untreated (control) house. Results: Altogether 9,692 An. funestus and 1,670 An. gambiae s.l. were collected. Houses treated with mosquito netting or the untreated shade cloth had 61.3% [IRR = 0.39 (0.32-0.46); P

Abstract Background: Asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum parasitemia (APFP) has been reported to be highly prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa, a region heavily burdened by malaria, yet, the impact of APFP on the immunological reference values have not yet been established. This study was aimed at i) determine the prevalence of APFP in children and adolescents living in a region highly endemic for malaria in southern Mozambique and its impact on the immuno-hematological indices and ii) determine the factors independently associated with APFP. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in a rural area highly endemic for Malaria in southern Mozambique during the dry season. Apparently healthy children and adolescents were selected for the study. Results: Blood samples were collected from 348 participants. Plasmodium falciparum was detected in 56.5% (194/343) of study subjects. APFP was more frequent in males and was associated with lower values of hemoglobin and platelets measurements. Parasitized and not parasitized individuals were similar in terms of lymphocyte counts, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells counts. Platelet count was the parameter with strongest association with APFP (OR: 0.991, p= 0.000) in children and its performance in guiding clinical suspicion was moderate (AUC: 0.70, p=0.000). Contrarily, in adolescents, the predictive value of platelets counts was low (AUC: 0.55). Conclusion: Overall, our finding demonstrated that APFP is highly prevalent in regions endemic for malaria in southern Mozambique and was associated with lower hematological parameters but unaltered lymphocyte counts, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells counts. Platelets count was of moderate performance in guiding clinical suspicion of APFP in children but not in adolescents.

44Expression Of Key Ion Transporters In The Gill And Esophageal-Gastrointestinal Tract Of Euryhaline Mozambique Tilapia Oreochromis Mossambicus Acclimated To Fresh Water, Seawater And Hypersaline Water.

By

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract The ability of euryhaline Mozambique tilapia to tolerate extreme environmental salinities makes it an excellent model for investigating iono-regulation. This study aimed to characterize and fill important information gap of the expression levels of key ion transporters for Na+ and Cl− in the gill and esophageal-gastrointestinal tract of Mozambique tilapia acclimated to freshwater (0 ppt), seawater (30 ppt) and hypersaline (70 ppt) environments. Among the seven genes studied, it was found that nkcc2, nkcc1a, cftr, nka-α1 and nka-α3, were more responsive to salinity challenge than nkcc1b and ncc within the investigated tissues. The ncc expression was restricted to gills of freshwater-acclimated fish while nkcc2 expression was restricted to intestinal segments irrespective of salinity challenge. Among the tissues investigated, gill and posterior intestine were found to be highly responsive to salinity changes, followed by anterior and middle intestine. Both esophagus and stomach displayed significant up-regulation of nka-α1 and nka-α3, but not nkcc isoforms and cftr, in hypersaline-acclimated fish suggesting a response to hypersalinity challenge and involvement of other forms of transporters in iono-regulation. Changes in gene expression levels were partly corroborated by immunohistochemical localization of transport proteins. Apical expression of Ncc was found in Nka-immunoreactive cells in freshwater-acclimated gills while Nkcc co-localized with Nka-immunoreactive cells expressing Cftr apically in seawater- and hypersaline-acclimated gills. In the intestine, Nkcc-stained apical brush border was found in Nka-immunoreactive cells at greater levels under hypersaline conditions. These findings provided new insights into the responsiveness of these genes and tissues under hypersalinity challenge, specifically the posterior intestine being vital for salt absorption and iono-osmoregulation in the Mozambique tilapia; its ability to survive in hypersalinity may be in part related to its ability to up-regulate key ion transporters in the posterior intestine. The findings pave the way for future iono-regulatory studies on the Mozambique tilapia esophageal-gastrointestinal tract.

47Cyclone Idai Devastates Mozambique, One Month On

By

In mid march, Cyclone Idai struck southern Africa, ravaging parts of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Of these countries, Mozambique was hardest hit. The storm struck the port city Beira and surrounding areas, creating a massive inland flood plane. At the time, the World Meteorological Organization called it one of the worst weather related disasters to ever strike the southern hemisphere. One month on, I wanted to get a sense of the how the recovery efforts were progressing, so I called up Dorothy Sang of Oxfam, who is on the line with me today from the city of Beira in Mozambique. Dorothy Sang is Oxfam's humanitarian advocacy manager and in this conversation she describes the scale of the damage wrought by Cyclone Idai and how international relief agencies like Oxfam are responding to this crisis. One thing that struck me about this conversation is how over one month since this crisis, relief agencies are still finding communities that have been totally cut off from access. Before we start: I do want to ask again for you to email me stories, anecdotes about how listening to this podcast impacted you in some way. Did you take some action based on this podcast?
