Advances in microprocessor technology have driven growth in the computing industry for decades. However, as transistors reach deep-nanometer scales, manufacturing challenges are causing increased variability in transistor characteristics. This in turn is contributing to slower processor frequency increases, higher power consumption and decreased reliability. Unless remedial action is taken, it is estimated that the gains of an entire technology generation may be lost. In this talk I will present two techniques I developed to address this problem at the microarchitecture and system levels. The first technique is based on fine-grain body biasing, in which different regions of a multicore chip are given different bias voltages that change the speed and power consumption of their transistors. I proposed dynamic fine-grain body biasing, which allows continuous adjustment of the bias voltages to adapt to changes in temperature or workload. The result is a reduction in variation, improving frequency and reducing power consumption. The second technique is based on variation-aware algorithms for application scheduling and power management in multicore chips. These algorithms use information about the frequency and power characteristics of each core to optimize application scheduling and to adjust the voltage and frequency settings for each core. This technique is very effective at saving power and improving performance of multicore chips affected by variation. ©2008 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Todd Gamblin, a computer scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, joined us to talk about Moore's Law, his work at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the components of a micro-chip, and High Performance Computing.

The question how complex systems become more organized and efficient with time is open. Examples are, the formation of elementary particles from pure energy, the formation of atoms from particles, the formation of stars and galaxies, the formation of molecules from atoms, of organisms, and of the society. In this sequence, order appears inside complex systems and randomness (entropy) is expelled to their surroundings. Key features of self-organizing systems are that they are open and they are far away from equilibrium, with increasing energy flowing through them. This work searches for global measures of such self-organizing systems, that are predictable and do not depend on the substrate of the system studied. Our results will help to understand the existence of complex systems and mechanisms of self-organization. In part we also provide insights, in this work, about the underlying physical essence of the Moore's law and the multiple logistic growth observed in technological progress.

Passive radar systems employing illuminators of opportunity such as commercial television and FM radio signals instead of dedicated radar transmitters have been the subject of increasing interest over the past decade. Under the subject contract funds, components for a flexible passive radar testbed were purchased that allow the exploration of many different passive radar architectures over a wide range of frequencies, from the lower VHF TV band (around 50 MHz) to the lower cell phone band (almost to 1 GHz). Particular emphasis is placed on multiple-antenna passive radar systems employing beamforming, i.e. not just two-antenna interferometry, since beamforming passive radar systems have not been previously explored in academic settings. Extensive technical detail on the components is given, so that this report may also serve as a user's manual for the system.

Intel Moore observed an exponential doubling in the number of transistors in every 18 months through the size reduction of transistor components since 1965. In viewing of mobile computing with insatiate appetite, we explored the necessary enhancement by an increasingly maturing nanotechnology and facing the inevitable quantum-mechanical atomic and nuclei limits. Since we cannot break down the atomic size barrier, the fact implies a fundamental size limit at the atomic/nucleus scale. This means, no more simple 18-month doubling, but other forms of transistor doubling may happen at a different slope. We are particularly interested in the nano enhancement area. (i) 3 Dimensions: If the progress in shrinking the in-plane dimensions is to slow down, vertical integration can help increasing the areal device transistor density. As the devices continue to shrink into the 20 to 30 nm range, the consideration of thermal properties and transport in such devices becomes increasingly important. (ii) Quantum computing: The other types of transistor material are rapidly developed in laboratories worldwide, for example, Spintronics, Nanostorage, HP display Nanotechnology, which are modifying this Law. We shall consider the limitation of phonon engineering fundamental information unit Qubyte in quantum computing, Nano/Micro Electrical Mechanical System (NEMS), Carbon Nanotubes, single-layer Graphenes, single-strip Nano-Ribbons, and so forth.

CAPT Gib Kerr, USN, PMS 435, is currently faced with the challenge of managing the cost and schedule impacts to submarine and surface ship procurements driven by the rapid tun-over of electronic technologies. These impacts include the costs and schedule implications of managing parts obsolescence on high technology Navy systems. This obsolescence occurs as commercial electronics manufacturers replace current component production with newer, more capable products. Navy ships are increasingly composed of complex electronics technology and rely almost totally on the commercial electronics industry for its parts. During the period required to develop and produce a Navy ship and its major systems, the electronic components will have gone through several life cycles, creating a tremendous workload for the ship's prime and subcontractors. Replacing these components over the life of the platform, when those components are no longer available commercially, magnifies the obsolescence impacts. CAPT Kerr specifically asked for students from the Electronics Seminar to study the phenomena of Moore's Law, the industry benchmark for the rate that electronic chip capability advances, and to provide a projection of how long this trend will continue. In addition, he asked the Electronics Seminar to assess the impacts to the commercial world's costs and schedules, and in turn, the cost and schedule impacts to Government systems.

Scaling transistors' dimensions has been the thrust for the semiconductor industry in the last 4 decades. However, scaling channel lengths beyond 10 nm has become exceptionally challenging due to the direct tunneling between source and drain which degrades gate control, switching functionality, and worsens power dissipation. Fortunately, the emergence of novel classes of materials with exotic properties in recent times has opened up new avenues in device design. Here, we show that by using channel materials with an anisotropic effective mass, the channel can be scaled down to 1nm and still provide an excellent switching performance in both MOSFETs and TFETs. In the case of TFETs, a novel design has been proposed to take advantage of anisotropic mass in both ON- and OFF-state of the TFETs. Full-band atomistic quantum transport simulations of phosphorene nanoribbon MOSFETs and TFETs based on the new design have been performed as a proof.

People talk about a Moore's Law for gene sequencing, a Moore's Law for software, etc. This is talk is about *the* Moore's Law, the bull that the other "Laws" ride; and how Python-powered ML helps drive it. How do we keep making ever-smaller devices? How do we harness atomic-scale physics? Large-scale machine learning is key. The computation drives new chip designs, and those new chip designs are used for new computations, ad infinitum. High-dimensional regression, classification, active learning, optimization, ranking, clustering, density estimation, scientific visualization, massively parallel processing -- it all comes into play, and Python is powering it all.

Simeon Bamford is a researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology (ITT), Freelance Consultant in Neuromorphic Engineering & passionate AI & ML enthusiast. We show that, in the context of Moore's Law, overall productivity can be increased for large enough computations by `slacking' or waiting for some period of time before purchasing a computer and beginning the calculation.

Moore’s Law is a prediction formulated by Gordon E. Moore in 1965 about transistor density on integrated chips. The law has been remarkably accurate from 1965 to 2013 with transistor density doubling roughly every two years. Since 2013, the trend has changes slightly, with transistor density now doubling every three years, instead of every two years. Moore's Law: The number of transistors that can be placed on a micro-circuit doubles every 18-24 months, resulting in a rapid turnover in generations of microcircuits. There are almost as many opinions about how long Moore's Law will be applicable as there have been technological advances since the Law was first annunciated in 1965. The majority of industry experts however believe that the physical limits of silicon based advancements will be reached by the end of the decade. Microelectronics obsolescence will remain a challenge as industry and academia alike are hard at work on marketing post-silicon applications. New atomic compounds such as gallenium arsenide and ferritin may replace silicon substrates within integrated circuits while entirely new technologies like quantum computing may transform the entire industry. The point is that while Moore's Law will end relatively soon innovation will not--and DoD program managers (PM) will still have to manage obsolescence.
