Document number CIA-RDP80-00810A001600440002-4 declassified and released through the CIA's CREST database. Previously available only on four computers located outside of Washington D.C., the Agency was successfully pressured into putting the files online as a result of a MuckRock lawsuit and the efforts of Emma Best. 10DTIC ADA228297: Mongolia Faces Glasnost And Perestroika

By

This paper is based primarily on impressions and information gathered firsthand on a visit to the Mongolian People's Republic (MPR) during the period 15-24 June 1989. I accompanied a group sponsored by the California Academy of Sciences as study leader. The group came to Ulan Bator by direct flight from Moscow and departed from Mongolia via Irkutsk, where we boarded the Transsiberian railroad to Khabarovsk and then flew to Japan. The time spent in the MPR included five days in Ulan Bator, the capital, and four in the countryside, including extensive excursions in the South Gobi. Keywords: Outer mongolia; USSR; International relations; Economics; International trade.

18Cystic Echinococcoses In Mongolia: Molecular Identification, Serology And Risk Factors.

By

This article is from PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases , volume 8 . Abstract Background: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a globally distributed cestode zoonosis that causes hepatic cysts. Although Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) is the major causative agent of CE worldwide, recent molecular epidemiological studies have revealed that E. canadensis is common in countries where camels are present. One such country is Mongolia. Methodology/Principal Findings: Forty-three human hepatic CE cases that were confirmed histopathologically at the National Center of Pathology (NCP) in Ulaanbaatar (UB) were identified by analysis of mitochondrial cox 1 gene as being caused by either E. canadensis (n = 31, 72.1%) or E. granulosus s.s. (n = 12, 27.9%). The majority of the E. canadensis cases were strain G6/7 (29/31, 93.5%). Twenty three haplotypes were identified. Sixteen of 39 CE cases with data on age, sex and province of residence were citizens of UB (41.0%), with 13 of the 16 cases from UB caused by E. canadensis (G6/7) (81.3%). Among these 13 cases, nine were children (69.2%). All pediatric cases (n  =  18) were due to E. canadensis with 17 of the 18 cases (94.4%) due to strain G6/7. Serum samples were available for 31 of the 43 CE cases, with 22 (71.0%) samples positive by ELISA to recombinant Antigen B8/1 (rAgB). Nine of 10 CE cases caused by E. granulosus s.s. (90.0%) and 13 of 20 CE cases by E. canadensis (G6/7) (65.0%) were seropositive. The one CE case caused by E. canadensis (G10) was seronegative. CE cases caused by E. granulosus s.s. showed higher absorbance values (median value 1.131) than those caused by E. canadensis (G6/7) (median value 0.106) (p  =  0.0137). Conclusion/Significance: The main species/strains in the study population were E. canadenis and E. granulossus s.s. with E. canadensis the predominant species identified in children. The reason why E. canadensis appears to be so common in children is unknown.

(S/D) Two undesignated, possible army-level. command and control facilities have been observed in Mongolia. The first was observed approximately 3 nautical 25X1 miles (nm) south-southwest of Sumber Suma Cho r and approximately 180 nm northwest of the Chinese border. The second facility was seen approximately 3 25X1 nm north of Ulan Bator and 300 nm northwest of the Chinese border. Both Ulan Bator and Sumber Suma are on the Ulan-Ude (USSR)/Beijing (China) rail line. 2. (S/D) The two facilities are of the same design (Figure I), each having a bunkered operations/control building and two arch-roofed bunkers. The operations/control buildings are in an early stage of construction, with the bases of the buildings measuring 27 meters square. The arch-roofed hunkers are 34 by 7 by 5 meters and are in the midstage of construction. The distance between the arch-roofed bunkers is 23 meters. 3. (S/D) These undesignated command and control facilities are possibly of army-level subordination. Ulan Bator is an army headquarters area. A second army headquarters is possibl being oped at Sumber Suma Motorized Rifle Division Headquarters/ Barracks AL-I 25X1 where the facilities are being upgraded and army-level units have recently been 25X1 observed in garrison. The placement of the undesignated command and control facilities near Ulan Bator and Sumber Suma may indicate the existence of two armies in Mongolia. 20Orionids Meteors Over Inner Mongolia

By

Explanation: Meteors have been shooting out from the constellation of Orion. This was expected, as October is the time of year for the Orionids Meteor Shower . Pictured here, over two dozen meteors were caught in successively added exposures last October over Wulan Hada volcano in Inner Mongolia , China . The featured image shows multiple meteor streaks that can all be connected to a single small region on the sky called the radiant , here visible just above and to the left of the belt of Orion , The Orionids meteors started as sand sized bits expelled from Comet Halley during one of its trips to the inner Solar System . Comet Halley is actually responsible for two known meteor showers , the other known as the Eta Aquarids and visible every May. An Orionids image featured on APOD one year ago today from the same location shows the same car. Next month, the Leonids Meteor Shower from Comet Tempel-Tuttle should also result in some bright meteor streaks.

25Spatial Distribution And Genesis Of Salt On The Saline Playa At Qehan Lake, Inner Mongolia, China

By

Inland salt lakes and saline wetlands are intricate systems in which moisture and salinity are continuously changing and especially sensitive to climate change and human pressure. Remote sensing helps to monitor the dynamic changes in the moisture and salinity of salt lakes and saline wetlands. Based on the Landsat 8 satellite data, this paper developed a multivariable linear regression model (MLRM) to predict the spatial distribution of salt on the saline playa at the Qehan Lake in Inner Mongolia, China. The developed MLRM used the remote sensing spectral indices and the Tasseled Cap Transformation wetness band (TCTW) as a variable. By using the TCTW and the surface temperature inversion data, the response of salt to surface moisture and temperature in the dry lake bed was explored. The results showed: The MLRM with brightness index (BI) and the TCTW as the auxiliary variables has the nice applicability (R adj2 = 0.598, RMSE = 1.640). The MLRM established using the vegetation index NDVI may be more applicable to environments where vegetation and salts were doped-together. Salt distribution in the Qehan Lake may be controlled by flat lake bed and miniature piedmonts. There was a significant correlation between measured soil electrical conductivity (EC) and TCTW, but no correlation with surface temperature. The influence of surface temperature on salt may be biased towards the time scale.

34Dust Over Mongolia And China: Natural Hazards

By

Near the end of May 2008, a springtime dust storm lingered over northern China for the second consecutive day, spreading southward over the Beijing region. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov (MODIS) on NASA's terra.nasa.gov/ Terra satellite took this picture on May 28, 2008. As in the previous day's image, dust and clouds swirl over the region, tan dust mixing with the puffy white clouds in the north. This image also shows considerable dust south of the main storm, over Beijing, Bo Hai, and North Korea. According to a May 28 report from Bloomberg, the dust storm pushed Beijing's pollution rating to ''hazardous.'' The heavy air pollution in the capital city raised doubts about the air quality that could be expected for the 2008 Summer Olympics. NASA images courtesy Jeff Schmaltz, rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov MODIS Rapid Response Team at NASA GSFC. Caption by Michon Scott.
