A very broadband distributed amplifier was designed using a 0.13-micrometer gallium arsenide (GaAs) pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (PHEMT) process from TriQuint Semiconductor. The design and fabrication of this circuit was performed as part of the fall 2011 Johns Hopkins University Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) Design Course, taught by the author. The design approach is applicable to very broadband, low noise MMICs that could be used for a variety of radio frequency (RF) and microwave systems.

12DTIC AD1030075: Microwave Photonic Architecture For Direction Finding Of LPI Emitters: Front End Analog Circuit Design And Component Characterization

Direction finding (DF) systems are critical components in electronic warfare intercept receivers. Many existing radio frequency DF techniques use a non-linear frequency down-conversion process that generates spurious frequencies that can hide the signals-of-interest. In addition, these systems suffer from a limited bandwidth and poor resolution (e.g., 2 degrees). To overcome these limitations, a miniature microwave photonic phase-sampling DF technique is investigated in this thesis. This front-end design uses a combination of integrated optical Mach-Zehnder phase detectors to measure the emitters phase difference with the largest baseline being 23 cm. The front-end components were characterized to ensure accuracy in the resolved angle-of-arrival (AOA). The front-end design was constructed to be modular in order to facilitate testing and verification of analog components accuracy. Signal processing with a class IV laser required particular attention to ensure that any stray radiation or leakage was isolated. Testing with low probability of intercept (LPI) waveform modulation consisted of using a linear frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) and a phase coded P4 modulation, both at 2.4 GHz, in an anechoic chamber. Measurements were taken to quantify the DF receiver sensitivity was R = -62.96 dBm. It was demonstrated that the system was capable of estimating the AOA for the FMCW signal with a root-mean square (RMS) error of 0.29 degree at 1 degree resolution and a P4 modulation RMS error of 0.32 degree at 1 degree resolution.

15Microwave-photonic Architecture For Direction Finding Of LPI Emitters: Front-end Analog Circuit Design And Component Characterization

Direction finding (DF) systems are critical components in electronic warfare intercept receivers. Many existing radio frequency DF techniques use a non-linear frequency down-conversion process that generates spurious frequencies that can hide the signals-of-interest. In addition, these systems suffer from a limited bandwidth and poor resolution (e.g., > 2°). To overcome these limitations, a miniature microwave-photonic phase-sampling DF technique is investigated in this thesis. This front-end design uses a combination of integrated optical Mach-Zehnder phase detectors to measure the emitter's phase difference with the largest baseline being 23 cm. The front-end components were characterized to ensure accuracy in the resolved angle-of-arrival (AOA). The front-end design was constructed to be modular in order to facilitate testing and verification of analog components accuracy. Signal processing with a class IV laser required particular attention to ensure that any stray radiation or leakage was isolated. Testing with low probability of intercept (LPI) waveform modulation consisted of using a linear frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) and a phase coded P4 modulation, both at 2.4 GHz, in an anechoic chamber. Measurements were taken to quantify the DF receiver sensitivity was Ȣʀ = 62.96 dBm. It was demonstrated that the system was capable of estimating the AOA for the FMCW signal with a root-mean square (RMS) error of 0.29° at < 1° resolution and a P4 modulation RMS error of 0.32° at <1° resolution.

16DTIC ADP004609: The Design Of A Thermally Efficient 1:256 Ku-Band Feed Network For A MMIC (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit) Phased Array

A thin, thermally transparent, 1:256 corporate feed network for use in a GaAs MMIC Ku-Band phased array antenna has been designed. The network will be realized using a recently developed RF transmission medium called CHANNELINE. CHANNELINE consists of a core of TFE coated copper wire placed in a channel routed through a heat exchanging metal structure which composes the backside of the array. This unique packaging arrangement conserves both volume and weight while simultaneously allowing the rapid transfer of internally generated heat. The network is comprised of a 1:4 waveguide to CHANNELINE divider, four 1:16 microstrp/CHANNELINE dividers, and sixtyy-four 1:4 microstrip dividers. The final 1:4 divider is colocated in the module with the GaAs MMIC elements. This network is expected to realize better than 15 dB of return loss with less than 1:3 dB insertion loss over an 8% bandwidth. Finally, the current status of array hardware is presented.
