There is a serious risk that the extra burden of adding instruction about microcomputers and software to regular elementary school curricula may turn off both teachers and students to the potential that microcomputers have for improving learning. To counter this risk, microcomputers should be integrated into the regular instructional program of elementary schools. This book is primarily intended for elementary school teachers who already have some experience with microcomputers but no expertise is assumed. This thesis explores the hardware requirements of a local area network and then constructs a multiuser software library package for Turkish Battleships. This on-going project is designed to demonstrate the concept of a fully integrated library system for technical libraries, combining local library functions with capabilities for participation in a Department of Defense (DoD) bibliographic network. The environment and characteristics of bibliographic networks are described; the automated system capabilities required for network participation are considered; and microcomputers are discussed as cost-effective yet powerful tools for exploiting bibliographic network resources. A discussion of the Local Automation Model project highlights the project background and environment, system concept demonstration, and prototype testing of the minicomputer- and microcomputer-based versions. Future development plans include production system acquisition, expanded gateway access, a common command language, reduction of manual effort, full-text and optical disk technology, and indexing standardization and controlled vocabulary. The hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) has developed versions of the HEC-1 Flood Hydrograph Package and the HEC-2 Water Surface Profiles Programs for MS/PC-DOS compatible microcomputers (PC). The increased speed, memory and storage capacity of the latest PCs make the use of these large FORTRAN programs highly practical in the PC environment. Typical tasks that are required when using these batch oriented programs include creating, checking and editing input data; executing the program; and summarizing and displaying the results. The HEC has developed a menu driven user interface or shell program to integrate several application programs, an editor and other utility programs to assist the user in accomplishing these tasks. The interface takes advantage of the unique capabilities and user friendliness found in the PC environment. In addition to the HEC-1 and HEC-2 programs, the integrated package includes a program (SUMPO) for creating summary tables of HEC-2 results, a program (PLOT2) that plots cross sections and water surface profiles, and a PC version of the Corps of Engineers editor (COED), which features full screen editing and on-line help screens and documentation. This thesis describes the functional requirements of the Shipboard Non-Tactical Automated Data Processing Program (SNAP II) : a micro-computer system designed to automate formerly manual procedures in the areas of shipboard supply, maintenance, and personnel/administration. A proposed Personnel Readiness and Training Management Subsystem (PTMS) is also described. Both systems are analyzed from a user's perspective. Recommendations are made regarding installation approach and composition of implementation teams. Applications for potential inclusion in SNAP II are also recommended. (Author)

Microcomputer applications are available to NAFC that will ease the workload and provide the planning staff additional time to develop supplemental information for management's use in decision-making. The Orkand Corporation has identified several microcomputer applications of potential benefit to the Planning Branch at NAFC. This report describes the potential application of an automated system, along with generic procedures for implementation. Chapter II of this report discusses the potential uses and implementation procedures of four software packet applications: word processing and graphic functions; decision tree techniques; network analyses; and modeling techniques. Chapter III discusses procedures for evaluating available software packages and provides a list of software packages currently available which perform the function discussed in Chapter II.

Charlotte Turner Smith (1749 – 1806) was an English poet and novelist. She initiated a revival of the English sonnet, helped establish the conventions of Gothic fiction, and wrote political novels of sensibility.<br /><br />It was in 1784, in debtor's prison with her husband Benjamin, that she wrote and published her first work, Elegiac Sonnets. The work achieved instant success, allowing Charlotte to pay for their release from prison. Captain John Smith (c. January 1580 – June 21, 1631) Admiral of New England was an English soldier, explorer, and author. He was knighted for his services to Sigismund Bathory, Prince of Transylvania. He is remembered for his role in establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, Virginia, and his brief association with the Virginia Indian girl Pocahontas during an altercation with the Powhatan Confederacy and her father, Chief Powhatan. 20Triplanetary, First in the Lensman Series

Triplanetary was first serialized in Amazing Stories in 1934. After the Lensman series became popular, Smith took his Triplanetary story and turned it into the first of the Lensman series, using it as a prequel to give the back story for the protaganists in the Lensmen series. He added 6 new chapters, doubling it in size and it's really a different book from the serialized novel, being published 14 years after the first. It was put into Gutenberg just last year.<br /><br /> The novel covers several episodes in an eons-long eugenics project of the super-intelligences of the Arisia. This alien race is breeding two genetic lines to become the ultimate weapon in Arisia's cosmic war with their arch enemy, the Eddore. The initial chapters cover the Kinnison genetic line during the fall of Atlantis and Nero's (Gharlane of Eddore) reign in Rome. These tales were inserted into the novel following the serialized release, along with chapters covering members of the Kinnison line in World Wars One, Two and Three. The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster than light travel. Patrolman Conway Costigan and his friends engage in a space battle with Gray Roger the pirate gangster. This conflict is complicated by the arrival of the technologically superior, extra-Solar, amphibian-like Nevians, resulting in the first interstellar war involving humans. In this story Virgil Samms and Roderick Kinnison, two very important members of the eugenics project, are introduced. They will play the leading roles in the next story, First Lensman. This gifted nature writer who is so good at describing animals and their habitat and habits here gives us a look at many of the fascinating creatures that can be found on the seashore. Starfish, the many types of crabs, shrimp, sea weed and finally something called the Precious Wentletrap which I will allow your imagination to think about for a while. His writing is clear and, as always, easy to read. Note that these are presented as educational 'lessons' on the various animals found near the sea and each lesson or chapter ends with a few questions called 'Exercises' which the student is asked to see if the main points of the chapter are retained.
