We derive absorption indices of ellipticals in clusters at z=0.37 from medium-resolution spectroscopy together with kinematical parameters. These galaxies exhibit a relationship between the Mgb linestrength and their internal velocity dispersion similar to local dynamically hot galaxies. But for any given sigma, Mgb of the distant ellipticals is significantly lower than the mean value of the nearby sample. The difference of Mgb between the two samples is small and can be fully attributed to the younger age of the distant stellar populations in accordance with the passive evolution model. The low reduction of Mgb at a look-back time of about 5 Gyrs requires that the bulk of the stars in cluster ellipticals have formed at very high redshifts of z_f>2. For the most massive galaxies, where the reduction is even lower, z_f probably exceeds 4. Unlike most methods to measure the evolution of ellipticals using luminosities, surface brightnesses or colours, the Mgb linestrength does not depend on corrections for extinction and cosmic expansion (K-correction) and only very little on the slope of the initial mass function. The combination of a kinematical parameter with a stellar population indicator allows us to study the evolution of very similar objects. In addition, the good mass estimate provided by sigma means that the selection criteria for the galaxy sample as a whole are well controlled. (abriged)

We present a first principles investigation of the lattice dynamics and electron-phonon coupling of the superconductor MgB_2 and the isostructural AlB_2 within the framework of density functional perturbation theory using a mixed-basis pseudopotential method. Complete phonon dispersion curves and Eliashberg functions \alpha^2F are calculated for both systems. We also report on Raman measurements, which support the theoretical findings. The calculated generalized density-of-states for MgB_2 is in excellent agreement with recent neutron-scattering experiments. The main differences in the calculated phonon spectra and \alpha^2F are related to high frequency in-plane boron vibrations. As compared to AlB_2, they are strongly softened in MgB_2 and exhibit an exceptionally strong coupling to electronic states at the Fermi energy. The total coupling constants are \lambda_{MgB_2}=0.73 and \lambda_{AlB_2}=0.43. Implications for the superconducting transition temperature are briefly discussed.

We have studied the electronic structure of 3d transition-metal- MgB_{2} alloys, Mg_{0.97}TM_{0.03}B_{2}, (TM\equiv Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) using KKR-CPA method in the atomic-sphere approximation. For unpolarized calculations, our results for Mg_{0.97}TM_{0.03}B_{2} alloys are similar to that of 3d impurities in other s and s-p metals. In particular, the local densities of states (DOS) associated with the 3d impurities are similar to our earlier work on 3d impurities in bulk Al. For spin-polarized calculations, we find only the alloys of V, Cr, Mn, Fe and Co with MgB_{2} to be magnetic of all the 3d elements. We also find that Cr and Mn in MgB_{2} have a relatively large local magnetic moment of 2.43 \mu_{B} and 2.87 \mu_{B}, respectively. We have used the unpolarized, self-consistent potentials of Mg_{0.97}TM_{0.03}B_{2} alloys, obtained within the coherent- potential approximation, to calculate the electron-phonon coupling constant \lambda using the Gaspari-Georffy formalism and the superconducting transition temperature T_{c} using the Allen-Dynes equation. We find that the calculated T_{c} is the lowest for Mg_{0.97}Cr_{0.03}B_{2} and the highest for Mg_{0.97}Zn_{0.03}B_{2}, in qualitative agreement with experiment. The calculated trend in variation of T_{c} from Mn to Zn is also similar to the available experimental data. Our analysis of the variation in T_{c}, in terms of the DOS and the spectral function along \Gamma to A direction, shows the variation to be an interplay between the total DOS at the Fermi energy and the creation/removal of states along \Gamma to A direction [P. P. Singh, cond-mat/0201093].

The magnetic field dependence of the spin-susceptibility, $\chi_{s}$ was measured in the superconducting state of high purity MgB$_{2}$ fine powders below 1.3 T. $\chi_{s}$ was determined from the intensity of the conduction electron spin resonance spectra at 3.8, 9.4, and 35 GHz. At the lowest magnetic fields (0.14 T), a gap opens in the density of states at the Fermi energy and, accordingly, $\chi_{s}(T)$ is small at low temperatures. Fields above 0.2 T (about 15 % of $H^{c}_{c2}$, the minimum upper critical field), destroy the gap. The field induced $\chi_{s}$ is much larger than expected from current superconductor models of MgB$_{2}$.

Cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy and magnetization measurements were used to study the superconducting properties of MgB_2. The magnetization measurements show a sharp superconductor transition onset at T_c = 38.5 K, in agreement with previous works. The tunneling spectra exhibit BCS gap structures, with gap parameters in the range of 5 to 7 meV, yielding a ratio of 2delat/KT_c ~ 3-4. This suggests that MgB_2 is a conventional BCS (s-wave) superconductor, either in the weak-coupling or in the `intermediate-coupling` regime

Non-resonant microwave absorption(NRMA) studies of superconducting MgB_2 at a frequency of 9.43 GHz in the field range -50 Gauss to 5000 Gauss are reported. The NRMA results indicate near absence of intergranular weak links. A linear temperature dependence of the lower critical field H_c1 is observed indicating a non s-wave superconductivity. However, the phase reversal of the NRMA signal which could suggest d-wave symmetry is also not observed.

We have investigated the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the Hall coefficient of two well-characterized superconducting MgB$_2$ films (T$_{c0}$=38.0 K) in both the normal and superconducting states. Our results show that the normal-state Hall coefficient R$_H$ is positive and increases with decreasing temperature, independent of the applied magnetic field. Below T$_c$(H), R$_H$ decreases rapidly with temperature and changes sign before it reaches zero. The position and magnitude at which R$_H$ shows a minimum depends on the applied field. Quantitative analysis of our data indicates that the Hall response of MgB$_2$ behaves very similarly to that of high-T$_c$ cuprates: R$_H$ $\propto$ T and cot$\theta_H$ $\propto$ T$^2$ in the normal state, and a sign reversal of R$_H$ in the mixed state. This suggests that the B-B layers in MgB$_2$, like the Cu-O planes in high-T$_c$ cuprates, play an important role in the electrical transport properties.

We consider the dependence of the MgB_2 superconducting critical temperature on the pressure. Our model exploits the influence of the large polarons on the band structure of the layered MgB_2 superconductor. Namely, the hole Pekar-Froehlich polarons form quasi two-dimensional potential wells in the boron plane which shift the positions of the sigma- and pi-bands. This energy shift depends on the pressure and the Cooper pairing of the correlated sigma-electrons happens inside polaron wells. The results obtained are as follows: dT_c/dp = -\alpha (5.2 \pm 0.9) K/GPa or dT_c/dp = -\alpha (6.9\pm 1.1) K/GPa for a different choice of the Grueneisen parameter. Being compared with known experimental data they give us a resonable interval for the value of the Froehlich electron-phonon coupling constant: \alpha = 0.15 - 0.45.

By doping MgB_2 superconductor with SiC nano-particles, we have successfully introduced pinning sites directly into the crystal lattice of MgB_2 grains (intra-grain pinning). It became possible due to the combination of counter-balanced Si and C co-substitution for B, leading to a large number of intra-granular dislocations and the dispersed nano-size impurities induced by the substitution. The magnetic field dependence of the critical current density was significantly improved in a wide temperature range, whereas the transition temperature in the sample MgB_2(SiC)_x having x = 0.34, the highest doping level prepared, dropped only by 2.6 K.

The results of electrical resistance (1.4 - 300 K), magnetization (2-300 K) and heat-capacity (2 - 50 K) measurements in Y$_2$PdGe$_3$, found to crystallize in a AlB$_2$-derived hexagonalstructure, are reported. The results establish that this compound is superconducting below 3 K. This obervation is interesting considering that this compound is the first superconductor among the ternary members derived from the hexagonal AlB$_2$ structure. With superconductivity being uncommon even among binary alloys derived from AlB$_2$ structure and with recent excitement on the observation of high temperature superconductivity in Mg$B_2$, this finding gains importance.

The penetration depth $\lambda$ is calculated from the $H_{c1}$ data. It is found that a linear relation of $H_{c1}(T)$ appears in whole temperature region below $T_c$. Furthermore a finite slope of $dH_{c1}/dT$ and $d\lambda(T)/dT$ remains down to the lowest temperature (2 K). These are inconsistent with the expectation for a widely thought s-wave superconductivity in $MgB_2$.

We investigated thermoelectric power $S(T)$ of MgB$_{2-x}$Be$_{x}$ ($x=0$, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.6). $S(T)$ decreases systematically with $x$, suggesting that the hole density increases. Our band calculation shows that the increase occurs in the $\sigma $-band. With the hole-doping, $T_{c}$ decreases. Implication of this phenomenon is discussed within the BCS framework. While the Mott formula explains only the linear part of $S(T)$ at low temperature, incorporation of electron-phonon interaction enables us to explain $S(T)$ over wide temperature range including the anomalous behavior at high temperature.

The flux flow resistivity associated with purely viscous motion of vortices in high-quality MgB_2 was measured by microwave surface impedance. Flux flow resistivity exhibits unusual field dependence with strong enhancement at low field, which is markedly different to conventional s-wave superconductors. A crossover field which separates two distinct flux flow regimes having different flux flow resistivity slopes was clearly observed in H//ab-plane. The unusual H-dependence indicates that two very differently sized superconducting gaps in MgB_2 manifest in the vortex dynamics and almost equally contribute to energy dissipation. The carrier scattering rate in two different bands is also discussed with the present results, compared to heat capacity and thermal conductivity results.

We have measured the Raman spectra of polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$ from 25 {\cm} to 1200 {\cm}. When the temperature was decreased below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, we observed a superconductivity-induced redistribution in the electronic Raman continuum. Two pair-breaking peaks appear in the spectra, suggesting the presence of two superconducting gaps. Furthermore, we have analyzed the measured spectra using a quasi two-dimensional model in which two s-wave superconducting gaps open on two sheets of Fermi surface. For the gap values we have obtained $\Delta_1 = 22 cm^{-1}$ (2.7 meV) and $\Delta_2 = 50 cm^{-1}$ (6.2 meV). Our results suggest that a conventional phonon-mediated pairing mechanism occurs in the planar boron $\sigma$ bands and is responsible for the superconductivity of MgB$_{2}$.

The irreversibility field was $\sim$ 8 T at low temperatures, although severe pinning instability was observed. These bulk-like superconducting properties show that the in situ deposition process can be a viable candidate for MgB$_2$ Josephson junction technologies.

These bulk-like superconducting properties show that the in situ deposition process can be a viable candidate for MgB$_2$ Josephson junction technologies.

We study the effect of magnetic Mn ions on the two-band superconductor MgB_2, and compute both the total and spin resolved scanning tunneling spectrum in the vicinity of the magnetic impurity. We show that when the internal structure of the Mn ion's d-shell is taken into account, multiple Shiba states appear in the spectrum. The presence of these multiplets could alter significantly the overall interpretation of local tunneling spectra for a wide range of superconducting hosts and magnetic impurities.

Smallpox, caused by the Variola major virus, is considered to be one of the most lethal of all potential biological weapons and has far-reaching consequences. Real-time polymerase chain reactions (PCR) assays are available as a reliable diagnostic tool to detect members of the genus Orthopoxvirus. In addition real-time PCR assays specific for variola virus have been developed that distinguish it from other orthopoxviruses. However, a positive identification of variola spp. does not classify the virus as the one that causes smallpox (V. major) or as the variant (V. minor) that causes a much less severe form of the disease. This study reports the development of a real-time PCR minor groove binder (MGB) -Eclipse probe assay utilizing a unique sequence within the variola B9R/B10R gene complex that reliably differentiates V. major from V. minor by specific probe melting temperatures (Tms) and genotyping analysis. The probe Tms for V. major and V. minor were 62.71 (+/- 0.05) and 53.97 (+/- 0.44) deg C, respectively (P = 0.001). We also used the identical sequence to develop a TaqMan -MGB assay that specifically detected V. minor but not V. major variants by qualitative analysis.

Imaging of flux vortices in high quality MgB$_2$ single crystals has been successfully performed in a commercial Field Emission Gun-based Transmission Electron Microscope. In Cryo-Lorentz Microscopy, the sample quality and the vortex lattice can be monitored simultaneously, allowing one to relate microscopically the surface quality and the vortex dynamics. Such a vortex motion ultimately determines the flow resistivity, $\rho_{f}$, the knowledge of which is indispensable for practical applications such as superconducting magnets or wires for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The observed patterns have been analyzed and compared with other studies by Cryo-Lorentz Microscopy or Bitter decoration. We find that the vortex lattice arrangement depends strongly on the surface quality obtained during the specimen preparation, and tends to form an hexagonal Abrikosov lattice at a relatively low magnetic field. Stripes or gossamer-like patterns, recently suggested as potential signatures of an unconventional behavior of MgB$_2$, were not observed.

We have measured the magnetic penetration depth of the recently discovered binary superconductor MgB_2 using muon spin rotation and low field $ac$-susceptibility. From the damping of the muon precession signal we find the penetration depth at zero temperature is about 85nm. The low temperature penetration depth shows a quadratic temperature dependence, indicating the presence of nodes in the superconducting energy gap.

According to the crystal structure of MgB$_{2}$ and band structure calculations quasi-two-dimensional (2D) boron planes are responsible for the superconductivity. We report on critical fields and resistance measurements of 30 nm thick MgB$_{2}$ films grown on MgO single crystalline substrate. A linear temperature dependence of the parallel and perpendicular upper critical fields indicate a 3D-like penetration of magnetic field into the sample. Resistivity measurements, in contrast, yield a temperature dependence of fluctuation conductivity above T$_{c}$ which agrees with the Aslamazov-Larkin theory of fluctuations in 2D superconductors. We consider this finding as an experimental evidence of two-dimensional nucleation of superconductivity in MgB$_{2}$.
