Colton might not have published the General Atlas in this period because of the Family Atlas collaboration with Johnson (just saw an 1862 & 1863 listed in World - Brit Museum, but maybe small editions were run?). That collaboration ended in 1863 (we believe) when Colton's name was dropped from the direct title page credits. Ristow states (p325) that Colton retired in 1864, and the General Atlas thereafter was published by G.W. & C.B. Phillips does not list this 1865 (which has J.H. as publisher) but has 1866 (P6155) published by G.W. & C.B. Colton adds the "Johnson" western states maps in this edition (and may have done this also in 1864), while Johnson drops them in 1864 and replaces them with maps of unknown source. The results are summarized from an initial assessment of the potential real-time meteorological requirements for the data from Eos systems. Eos research scientists associated with facility instruments, investigator instruments, and interdisciplinary groups with data related to meteorological support were contacted, along with those from the normal operational user and technique development groups. Two types of activities indicated the greatest need for real-time Eos data: technology transfer groups (e.g., NOAA's Forecasting System Laboratory and the DOD development laboratories), and field testing groups with airborne operations. A special concern was expressed by several non-U.S. participants who desire a direct downlink to be sure of rapid receipt of the data for their area of interest. Several potential experiments or demonstrations are recommended for ISES which include support for hurricane/typhoon forecasting, space shuttle reentry, severe weather forecasting (using microphysical cloud classification techniques), field testing, and quick reaction of instrumented aircraft to measure such events as polar stratospheric clouds and volcanic eruptions.

Two wind profiles were determined from STS-1 entry flight data based on preliminary best estimate trajectory (BET). The deterministic process used in deriving the atmospheric winds requires inertial estimates of the spacecraft angle-of-attack (alpha) and side-slip angle (beta) from the BET in conjunction with some air data system measurements of the actual angles. The current orbiter air data system (OADS) provides the necessary alpha information. Two beta profiles were adopted. The first profile assumed that the spacecraft would weathervane into any prevailing wind. The second assumed a conservative side-slip history computed from measured accelerations in the spacecraft body axes. It is shown that there are no major differences between the deterministic winds computed using both methods. Further, comparisons of these winds with raw measurements from Tehachapi, California, and preliminary winds obtained from the LaRC LAIRS file and the JSC/TRW descent BET are presented.

This document contains a basic analysis of the meteorology associated with the NASA Glenn Twin Otter icing encounters between December 1997 and March 1998. The purpose of this analysis is to provide a meteorological context for the aircraft data collected during these flights. For each case, the following data elements are presented: (1) A brief overview of the Twin Otter encounter, including locations, liquid water contents, temperatures and microphysical makeup of the clouds and precipitation aloft, (2) Upper-air charts, providing hand-analyzed locations of lows, troughs, ridges, saturated/unsaturated air, temperatures, warm/cold advection, and jet streams, (3) Balloon-borne soundings, providing vertical profiles of temperature, moisture and winds, (4) Infrared and visible satellite data, providing cloud locations and cloud top temperature, (5) 3-hourly surface charts, providing hand-analyzed locations of lows, highs, fronts, precipitation (including type) and cloud cover, (6) Hourly, regional radar mosaics, providing fine resolution of the locations of precipitation (including intensity and type), pilot reports of icing (including intensity and type), surface observations of precipitation type and Twin Otter tracks for a one hour window centered on the time of the radar data, and (7) Hourly plots of icing pilot reports, providing the icing intensity, icing type, icing altitudes and aircraft type. Outages occurred in nearly every dataset at some point. All relevant data that was available is presented here. All times are in UTC and all heights are in feet above mean sea level (MSL).

This report summarizes the Applied Meteorology Unit (AMU) activities for the fourth quarter of Fiscal Year 20 12 (July - September 2012).

The study aimed to determine whether there was any significant difference in understanding levels between secondary school boys and girls on the concepts of environmental degradation, meteorology and climate change. Both structured survey and focus group discussions were used to collect information from 480 students, sampled randomly from 12 secondary schools in Morogoro region. The findings indicated that boys were significantly more knowledgeable than girls on the specified environmental concepts. This implies that girls lagged behind their counterparts in understanding important environmental concepts as specified in the school curriculum. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that girls should be inspired and encouraged to develop interest in natural science subjects which would enable them to broaden their understanding about environmental issues.

Our long-term goal is to employ near-surface wind speed derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of the sea surface as a marine meteorological research and forecasting tool. That is, we aim to use SAR-derived wind speed (SDWS) images to discover dynamical and morphological characteristics of microscale, mesoscale, and synoptic scale marine meteorological phenomena. We also aim to demonstrate how the fruits of our discovery can be used to aid marine meteorological analysts and forecasters.

This report documents the results of a study of Royal Australian Navy weather forecasters. The results replicate and extend the accomplishments of the ONR-funded Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC) Human Systems Interaction Improvement (HSII) Project. The objective was to map information usage of U.S. Navy (USN) METOC forecasters to visualization tools, and compare that mapping to mappings employed by another group of forecasters, located In a very different geographic region, employing different tools, and with different patterns of staffing and training. Data collected at two Royal Australian Navy (RAN) facilities replicated the principal findings of HSII in terms of workflow and extraction from complex visualizations. They extended the findings by documenting how forecasters assess the associated uncertainties in models and data.

It is a major challenge to determine whether bias in operational global wave predictions is predominately due to the wave model itself(internal error) or due to errors in wind forcing (an external error). Another challenge is to characterize bias attributable to errors in wave model physics (e.g., input, dissipation, and nonlinear transfer). In this study, hindcasts and an evaluation methodology are constructed to address these challenges. The bias of the wave predictions is evaluated with consideration of the bias of four different wind forcing fields [two of which are supplemented with the NASA Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) measurements]. It is found that the accuracy of the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center's operational global wind forcing has improved to the point where it is unlikely to be the primary source of error in the center's global wave model (WAVEWATCH-III). The hindcast comparisons are specifically designed to minimize systematic errors from numerics and resolution. From these hindcasts, insight into the physics-related bias in the global wave model is possible: comparison to in situ wave data suggests an overall positive bias at northeast Pacific locations and an overall negative bias at northwest Atlantic locations. Comparison of frequency bands indicates a tendency by the model physics to overpredict energy at higher frequencies and underpredict energy at lower frequencies.
