Aerosol effects on micro/macrophysical properties of marine stratocumulus clouds over the western North Atlantic Ocean (WNAO) are investigated using in situ measurements and large-eddy simulations (LES) for two cold-air outbreak (CAO) cases (28 February and 1 March 2020) during the Aerosol Cloud Meteorology Interactions over the Western Atlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE). The LES is able to reproduce the vertical profiles of liquid water content (LWC), effective radius reff and cloud droplet number concentration Nc from fast cloud droplet probe (FCDP) in situ measurements for both cases. Furthermore, we show that aerosols affect cloud properties (N c , r eff , and LWC) via the prescribed bulk hygroscopicity of aerosols (¯k) and aerosol size distribution characteristics. N c , r eff , and liquid water path (LWP) are positively correlated to ¯κ and aerosol number concentration (N a ) while cloud fractional cover (CFC) is insensitive to ¯κ and aerosol size distributions for the two cases. The realistic changes to aerosol size distribution (number concentration, width, and the geometrical diameter) with the same meteorology state allow us to investigate aerosol effects on cloud properties without meteorological feedback. We also use the LES results to evaluate cloud properties from two reanalysis products, ERA5 and MERRA-2. Compared to LES, the ERA5 is able to capture the time evolution of LWP and total cloud coverage within the study domain during both CAO cases while MERRA-2 underestimates them.

The transition between the L dwarf and T dwarf spectral classes is one of the most remarkable along the stellar/brown dwarf Main Sequence, separating sources with photospheres containing mineral condensate clouds from those containing methane and ammonia gases. Unusual characteristics of this transition include a 1 micron brightening between late L and early T dwarfs observed in both parallax samples and coeval binaries; a spike in the multiplicity fraction; evidence of increased photometric variability, possibly arising from patchy cloud structures; and a delayed transition for young, planetary-mass objects. All of these features can be explained if this transition is governed by the "rapid" (nonequlibrium) rainout of clouds from the photosphere, triggered by temperature, surface gravity, metallicity and (perhaps) rotational effects. While the underlying mechanism of this rainout remains under debate, the transition is now being exploited to discover and precisely characterize tight ( < 1 AU) very low-mass binaries that can be used to test brown dwarf evolutionary and atmospheric theories, and resolved binaries that further constrain the properties of this remarkable transition.

Phillips shows 1860 and 1864 editions, with none in between. Colton might not have published the General Atlas in this period because of the Family Atlas collaboration with Johnson (just saw an 1862 & 1863 listed in World - Brit Museum, but maybe small editions were run?). That collaboration ended in 1863 (we believe) when Colton's name was dropped from the direct title page credits. Ristow states (p325) that Colton retired in 1864, and the General Atlas thereafter was published by G.W. & C.B. Phillips does not list this 1865 (which has J.H. as publisher) but has 1866 (P6155) published by G.W. & C.B. Colton adds the "Johnson" western states maps in this edition (and may have done this also in 1864), while Johnson drops them in 1864 and replaces them with maps of unknown source. Forecasting optical turbulence is essential for the Air Force's Airborne Laser program to optimize placement of aircraft. To find bow meteorology affects C(sub n)(sup 2), the intensity of turbulence in the index of refraction, case studies of synoptically interesting times are first chosen. Correlation coefficients are then computed between radar measured C(sub n)(2) and meteorological quantities. The potential for mechanically turbulent activity is looked at. In the analysis of this work, six meteorological features were found likely to affect C(sub n((sup 2). Two features associated with affecting potential refractivity, and thus C(sub n)(sup 2), are jets and inversions. North of jet core level in the northern hemisphere, higher values of C(sub n)(sup 2) can be found north of the core, with lower values to the south. With temperature inversions, typically higher values of can be found just above inversions with comparatively lower C(sub n)(sup 2) values underneath. The remaining four features affecting C(sub n)(sup 2) are not directly related to potential refractivity alone. The first is bands of high C(sub n)(sup 2) occurring within regions of strong vertical wind shear. The second feature is high C(sub n)(sup 2) occasionally seen underneath inversions during the approach of jets that are associated with gravity wave activity. The other two meteorological features are tropopause boundaries and trough passage.

Tsonis and Christos Zerefos (Oxford, 2020), in 130 bookmarked and searchable pdf pages, with numerous illustrations.  This excellent work explains passages in Aristotle's  Meteorologica/Meteorology in a way understandable to non-specialists. From the Prolegomena: "Meteorology derives from the Ancient Greek word μετέωρος metéōros (meteor) which means ‘things suspended high in the air’. Μετεωρολογικά ( Meteorologica; on Meteorology) occupies a special place within the body of work by Aristotle. It is the only book dealing with many diverse areas such as astronomy, geometry, optics, geography, seismology, volcanology, chemistry, and today’s aim of meteorology, weather forecasting and is divided into four books. Some of the features that Aristotle discusses in Meteorologica (for example, rivers and the seas), cannot be considered as  suspended in the air... ...In this study we will consider only parts relevant to meteorological phenomena (for example, we will not deal with Aristotle’s views on the stars or earthquakes) and we will compare Aristotle’s arguments with the current knowledge of meteorology."

A summary of the meteorological conditions in the Gulf of Alaska during the Ocean Storms experiment is presented along with a data set of the surface meteorological observations by ships of opportunity and National Data Buoy Center buoys. An optimal interpolation procedure is described and used with the surface observations to interpolate air pressure, wind speed and direction, air temperature, air-sea temperature difference, and dew point depression. Separate interpolations are made using the National Meteorological Center 2.5 deg grids and digitized versions of hand analyses made during the experiment. Extensive comparisons are made between these three data sets and the observations at three NDBC buoys. These are used to assess the accuracy of the interpolated fields and to suggest optimal ways to use them to compute surface winds, temperatures, and fluxes. The hand analyzed synoptic charts of the surface meteorology are included. The air stress and sensible heat flux are presented for the position of the Ocean Storms moorings. A data tape containing all the observations, interpolations, and fields is described.
