1Exploring The Mechanisms Of Zoom Fatigue – An Experiment On The Causes For Mental Exhaustion And Dissatisfaction With Videoconferences

By

The present study aims to test and compare two possible explanations for the phenomenon commonly known as Zoom Fatigue (or videoconference fatigue), a feeling of exhaustion and dissatisfaction occurring as a result of participating in videoconferences (Bailenson, 2021). Based on objective self-awareness theory (Duval & Wicklund, 1972) and previous research on video-mediated communication (Miller at al., 2017; Abramova et al., 2021) we aim at experimentally investigating if and how a videoconference’s self-view feature (i.e., seeing one’s own video stream amongst the videos of other participants of a video conference) contributes to this experienced exhaustion. Our first assumption is that the self-view feature, similar to previously reported effects caused by mirrors (Froming et al., 1981), makes users' experience objective self-awareness, thus making them focus more on their own personal standards. Efforts for adhering to these standards could then lead to exhaustion over the course of the videoconference. In contrast, our second explanation assumes that the objective self-awareness caused by the self-view feature heightens salience on how individuals think they are perceived by other participants of a videoconference. In this case, the effort will be invested to manage one’s own impressions in order to be evaluated more favorably by these other users (Leary & Kowalski, 1990). In sum, we expect the activated self-view feature to increase moral behaviors and impression management behavior which are then supposed to result in videoconference fatigue and more dissatisfaction with the videoconference interaction. Of course, many potential reasons for videoconference fatigue have been pointed out already, such as tiny asynchronies, restricted body movement, or cognitive overload to name just a few (Bailenson, 2021; Riedl, 2021; Döring et al., 2022). But despite these important theoretical assumptions, the amount of experimental investigation on Zoom Fatigue is rather limited. Videoconference fatigue is a multicausal phenomenon and thus no single experiment will be able to explain all its causes. Thus, the central aim of this experiment is to test two possible explanations of why videoconference fatigue occurs (through impression management and/or moral behavior), which are tightly linked to a very prominent and often default feature of many videoconference systems, the self-view-feature.

2Examining Mechanisms Underlying Associations Between Prenatal Stressful Life Events And Child Mental Health Outcomes

By

Exposure to prenatal maternal stressful life events (SLE) has been linked to increased risks of emotional and behavioural problems in offspring. However, there are mixed findings with regard to if the links suggest causal relationships. This project will use family-based quasi-experimental methods to examine mechanisms underlying the associations between prenatal maternal SLE and child mental health outcomes. Background Exposure to prenatal maternal stress including emotional distress, exposure to natural disasters, stressful life events and socioeconomic adversity has been linked to increased risks of neurodevelopmental abnormality and mental health problems in offspring (Madigan 2018, Van den Bergh 2020, Cory-Slechta 2018). The reported associations vary in magnitude across different combinations of stress exposure and offspring outcomes. For example, prenatal financial stress is more strongly associated with offspring brain development than is prenatal maternal psychological distress (Triplett 2022). Findings also appear influenced by effects of timing and/or developmental stage. For example, exposure to prenatal natural disasters have been reported to predict child negative emotionality at age 2 months but not at ages 4 and 6 months (Rodriguez 2021). Whether exposure to prenatal maternal stress causes negative offspring outcomes remains an unsettled issue. A number of theories have been proposed to explain the links. For example, the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) and foetal programming hypothesis (FPH, Barker 1998) are theories positing that exposure to prenatal maternal stress directly affects the mothers intrauterine biological systems (e.g., cortisol reactivity, HPA-axis, immune system), which consequently influences foetal development and ultimately leads to cognitive and/or psychological consequences in offspring (Eberie 2021, Theunissen 2022, Anifantaki 2021, Chan 2018, Pluess 2011, Van den Bergh 2020). However, family-based quasi-experimental studies have largely found no evidence to support causal effects of prenatal maternal stress on offspring emotional or behavioural outcomes (Hannigan et al., 2018; Ahmadzadeh et al., 2021, Rosenviqt 2019). Instead of direct influence, family-based studies suggest that the associations are confounded by other mechanisms: prenatal maternal stress and child outcome could share common causes. For example, the same genetic and/or environmental factors that influence maternal exposure of prenatal stress could also influence child outcomes (Ahmadzadeh et al., 2021). Family-based quasi-experimental studies use family members that differ in their environmental exposure and genetic risk to test causal hypotheses (Donofrio 2013). Sibling comparison is one family-based quasi-experimental design which capitalises on differentially exposed siblings to disentangle mechanisms underlying associations between environmental exposure and outcomes. Siblings are matched in so far as they share many environmental effects including parental factors and family socioeconomic status. In addition, genetic differences between siblings are randomly assigned at conception, and so assumed independent of differences in environmental exposure. Therefore, if differentially exposed siblings also differ in outcomes, then it suggests that the exposure-outcome association is less likely due to shared genetic and environmental confounding. Nevertheless, like all study designs, sibling comparison method is based on a number of assumptions that warrant further examination. One of the assumptions of sibling comparison method is that exposure and outcomes of one child do not affect their siblings, a so-called ‘carryover effect’ (Lahey 2010, D’Onofrio 2016, Sjolander 2016). When this assumption is violated, we may over- or underestimate effects of the exposure depending on the type of carryover effect (Sjolander 2016). The potential for such bias can be explored by comparing discordant sibling pairs in which the older vs younger sibling is the one who was exposed. If results differ depending on birth order, then there may be carryover effects (Sjolander 2016). Other family-based quasi-experimental designs that can be used to study causal relationship include extended family methods such as the Children-of-Twins-and-Siblings (CoTS) model and Multiple-Children-of-Twins-and-Siblings (MCoTS) model. Both models compare phenotypic correlations between children with their parents and children with their aunt/uncle to infer genetic and environmental contributions in exposure-outcome associations (McAdams 2018). By separating out shared genetic and environmental influences, the excess of parent-offspring similarity suggests direct phenotypic transmission through exposure to the child outcomes. In addition, extended family methods can be used to investigate exposure that is highly correlated between siblings (e.g., parental divorce/separation), where sibling comparison method cannot be applied (Petersen 2020). It is of note that, the CoTS model is not subject to birth order effects or carryover effects when only one child per adult sibling is included in the model. However, the MCoTs model studies multiple children of same parents, which increases power relative to CoTS models that use single children per parent while the use of siblings in the offspring generation may be biased by spill-over effects. Despite the cautionary note raised by family-based studies with regard to the direct influence of prenatal stress on offspring outcomes, these studies predominantly focused on maternal stressors in normative samples. It has been argued that foetal programming may primarily occur in the context of more severe forms of maternal stressor (Lugo-Candelas 2018). Findings on exposure to disaster-related prenatal maternal stress such as natural disasters (e.g., storms, flooding) and terror attacks have provided support to the notion that extreme stress and stressful life events (SLE) during pregnancy may influence offspring neurocognitive and psychological outcomes (Kings 2012, Simock 2017, Weinstein 2018). Capitalising on the random nature of disasters, disaster-related studies use natural experimental designs for analyses of exposure-outcome associations and strengthen causal inference by ruling out alternative explanations (de Vocht 2021). However, causal attribution has to be made with caution as evidence has shown that contextual factors such as socioeconomic circumstances and living environment play a critical role in individuals’ vulnerability to disasters (Bergstrand 2015, Cutter 2003). Moreover, it was also found that the effects of objective hardship of natural disasters on child outcomes depended on mothers’ subjective distress to the disasters (Simcock 2017, Cao 2014). Although these findings do not refute that extreme stress during pregnancy has causal influence on developmental outcomes in offspring, they highlight the potential of unmeasured confounding in such study designs. Therefore, there is a need to combine evidence from different methods to investigate the causal hypothesis. In this study, we aim to examine the relationships between prenatal maternal stress and offspring outcomes with a focus on stressful life event (SLE) and emotional outcomes in offspring using data from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). The prenatal SLE includes life events causing differing levels of distress to pregnant women and their family, such as having financial problems or losing someone close. To fill the gaps in current literature, we will employ different family-based quasi-experimental methods to rigorously examine to what extent unmeasured confounding is involved in the relationships between prenatal maternal SLE and offspring outcomes. We will evaluate whether the nature of associations may differ according to impact severity of SLE in our exploratory analysis, as this has yet to be examined in previous family-based quasi-experimental studies. In addition, we will incorporate birth order information in our sibling-comparison model to test for carryover effects. Finally, we will extend the sibling-control design from nuclear family to extended family and include half-siblings and cousins to further examine other confounding processes. Potential causal inferences will be made through triangulation of evidence across different approaches.

7Cognitive Mechanisms By Which The Controllability Of Daily Stressful Events Affects Mental Health: The Role Of Coping Strategies And Synergistic Mindsets

By

Different characteristics of stressful events can have different effects on mental health in terms of direction, strength, and duration. For example, research has shown that people typically feel less distress and experience more stress-related growth when stressful events are perceived as controllable, regardless of whether the stress is acute or chronic (Frazier & Caston, 2015). In contrast, in laboratory settings, artificially induced uncontrollable stress (noise) causes subjects to self-report higher levels of helplessness, stress, anxiety, and depression (Breier et al., 1987). However, the effect of stress controllability on mental health may also be influenced by other intermediate variables, such as the use of different coping strategies. Identifying whether the environment is controllable is crucial for individuals to predict the coping process, because only when the environment is more controllable do individuals perceive their behavior to be causally related to the environment and therefore try to change the status quo by switching coping strategies (Ligneul et al., 2020). Stress coping can be divided into two categories based on people's blunted or sensitized responses to hazards, with avoidant coping being more applicable to uncontrollable situations and approach coping being more applicable to controllable situations (Roth & Cohen, 1986). Research has shown that individuals use more approach coping strategies and less avoidant coping strategies for highly controllable stress (Carver & Connor-Smith, 2010; Griffith et al., 2000). Further, greater use of avoidant coping strategies is associated with higher anxiety symptoms and lower levels of mental health (Chu et al., 2022; Park et al., 2022); whereas the use of approach-based coping strategies is associated with fewer depressive symptoms in adolescents (Seiffge-Krenke & Klessinger, 2000). Thus, coping strategies may mediate the relationship between stress controllability and mental health. However, the effects of stress controllability on mental health are not only mediated by coping strategies, but may also be moderated by other factors, such as the individual's mindset. Stress mindset and growth mindset are two mindsets that have received considerable attention and are strongly associated with the use of coping strategies and mental health. Individuals with stress-can-be-enhancing mindsets exhibit more approach-oriented behavioral responses and lower levels of depression and anxiety in response to stress (Crum et al., 2013; Huebschmann & Sheets, 2020; Yeager et al., 2022), whereas individuals with stress-can-be-debilitating mindsets are more likely to use avoidant coping strategies and have higher levels of depression (Chen & Qu, 2021). The antithesis of the growth mindset is fixed mindset. Research has shown that the growth mindset of emotion is associated with greater use of reappraisal strategies and less use of suppression strategies, whereas the fixed mindset of emotion is associated with lower self-esteem and life satisfaction, and higher levels of stress and depression (Burnette et al., 2013; De Castella et al., 2013). In addition, the growth mindset buffers the relationship between the number of stressful life events and depression as well as avoidant coping strategies (Schroder et al., 2017). Evidence from meta-analyses has found that the growth mindset of emotion is associated with more active coping and less psychological distress (Burnette et al., 2020). Thus, these two mindsets may work together to moderate the relationship between stress and coping strategies and mental health. However, most of these studies have viewed the two types of mindsets as independent of each other, and few have explored how their interaction affects coping strategies and psychological well-being. Yeager et al. (2022) made a breakthrough contribution to this by a simultaneous intervention targeting stress-can-be-enhancing mindset and growth mindset, and found that this "synergistic mindsets" intervention was effective in increasing participants' well-being and reducing anxiety symptoms. However, most of these studies were based on idiosyncratic questionnaires or laboratory studies, and it is unclear how these "synergistic mindsets" relates to coping strategies and mental health under real-life conditions. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA), also known as the Experience sampling method (ESM), is used as a structured self-report diary technique that is often used to assess emotional states in daily life, symptoms of illness, situations, and individuals' perceptions of events (Myin-Germeys et al., 2018; Myin-Germeys et al., 2009). This method has the advantages of high ecological validity and not being susceptible to recall bias (Armey et al., 2015; Lincoln et al., 2022; Shiffman et al., 2008) and is widely used in psychological research. However, to our knowledge, few researchers have applied this approach to explore changes in real-life mindsets, and it is unclear whether "synergistic mindsets" exist in everyday settings. This issue can be well addressed by combining EMA and multilevel latent profile analysis (Grommisch et al., 2020) to explore the relationship between every day "synergistic mindsets" and coping strategies and mental health. Using the EMA method and combining multilevel latent profile analysis and a multilevel moderated mediation model, the present study aims to investigate the mediating role of coping strategies on the relationship between stress controllability and mental health (depression, anxiety levels, and satisfaction with life) and the moderating role of synergistic mindsets.

14A Review Of Protective Factors And Causal Mechanisms That Enhance The Mental Health Of Indigenous Circumpolar Youth.

By

This article is from International Journal of Circumpolar Health , volume 72 . Abstract Objectives: To review the protective factors and causal mechanisms which promote and enhance Indigenous youth mental health in the Circumpolar North. Study design: A systematic literature review of peer-reviewed English-language research was conducted to systematically examine the protective factors and causal mechanisms which promote and enhance Indigenous youth mental health in the Circumpolar North. Methods: This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, with elements of a realist review. From 160 records identified in the initial search of 3 databases, 15 met the inclusion criteria and were retained for full review. Data were extracted using a codebook to organize and synthesize relevant information from the articles. Results: More than 40 protective factors at the individual, family, and community levels were identified as enhancing Indigenous youth mental health. These included practicing and holding traditional knowledge and skills, the desire to be useful and to contribute meaningfully to one's community, having positive role models, and believing in one's self. Broadly, protective factors at the family and community levels were identified as positively creating and impacting one's social environment, which interacts with factors at the individual level to enhance resilience. An emphasis on the roles of cultural and land-based activities, history, and language, as well as on the importance of social and family supports, also emerged throughout the literature.More than 40 protective factors at the individual, family, and community levels were identified as enhancing Indigenous youth mental health. Conclusions: Healthy communities and families foster and support youth who are resilient to mental health challenges and able to adapt and cope with multiple stressors, be they social, economic, or environmental. Creating opportunities and environments where youth can successfully navigate challenges and enhance their resilience can in turn contribute to fostering healthy Circumpolar communities. Looking at the role of new social media in the way youth communicate and interact is one way of understanding how to create such opportunities. Youth perspectives of mental health programmes are crucial to developing appropriate mental health support and meaningful engagement of youth can inform locally appropriate and culturally relevant mental health resources, programmes and community resilience strategies.

18Mechanisms Of Self-Handicapping And Their Impact On Mental Health

By

This study explores the relationship between self-handicapping behavior and mental health symptoms among university students. It investigates how psychological traits such as perfectionism and narcissism influence self-handicapping, and whether epistemic mistrust and mentalizing capacity serve as mediating variables in these relationships. Data will be collected via validated questionnaires administered online. Structural equation modeling (SEM) will be used to analyze the hypothesized relationships among the study variables.

19How Does Childhood Adversity Contribute To Poor Mental Health: A Scoping Review Of Social-transactional Mechanisms

By

Childhood maltreatment and adverse childhood experiences (referred to here as childhood adversity) are among the most consistent predictors of mental health problems in later life. Significant research on childhood adversity demonstrates that it confers risk for mental health problems by impacting neurocognitive systems; however the pathways from childhood adversity to mental health problems are likely to be also mediated by social processes. The neurocognitive social-transactional model posits that neurocognitive adaptations following childhood adversity produce changes in how individuals interact with their social environment (referred to here as social-transactional mechanisms). These mechanisms are proposed to transactionally and autocatalytically influence objective and subjective elements of individuals’ social architecture in ways that increase risk for future mental health problems. We will map the extant evidence for trust, mentalizing, agency and interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) as candidate social-transactional mechanisms implicated in pathways from childhood adversity to mental health outcomes. The primary objective is to review the evidence for the relationships between childhood adversity, trust/mentalizing/agency/IER and mental health. A secondary objective is to establish the potential translational value of these putative mechanisms by examining whether these mechanisms are likely to be transdiagnostic. We will consider these findings across settings and sub-populations.

21Understanding The Mechanisms Through Which Socio-economic Circumstances Affect Adolescent Mental Health

By

Adolescents’ mental health is often associated with their socio-economic circumstances. However, the mechanisms through which these circumstances affect adolescent mental health are not fully understood. This review article will discuss different pathways through which socio-economic circumstances impact adolescent internalising disorders. The review will use systematic searches to identify studies that have investigated for mediators between socio-economic circumstances and adolescent internalising disorders and symptoms. There is also little awareness of how mechanisms might vary by setting despite evidence that the strength of the magnitude of adolescent mental health inequalities varies across contexts such as countries. The review will also discuss how the wider contextual circumstances may impact the pathways and mediators identified in the preceding section.

24Mapping The Evidence On The Gut Microbiota And Mental Health From Childhood To Young Adulthood: A Scoping Review Of Evidence And Mechanisms

By

This scoping review aimed to map and characterize observational and interventional studies linking gut microbiota and mental health among youth aged 10–24 years. It will identify outcome domains, microbiome targets (such as microbial diversity or specific strains), intervention strategies, and population subgroups (i.e., which groups of young people were included in the review). Furthermore, this review investigates the representation of adverse stress exposures, such as bullying, poverty, or trauma, and physiological stress responses, including allostatic load, which refers to the cumulative "wear and tear" on the body resulting from chronic stress, within the literature. This study aims to inform the development of sociobiologically informed mental health interventions for youth. This review adheres to the JBI methodology and will be documented using the PRISMA-ScR guidelines.

26DTIC ADA108430: An Investigation Of Mental Coding Mechanisms And Heuristics Used In Electronics Troubleshooting.

By

This research is comprised of four separate but related efforts, which are: (1) A Review of Troubleshooting Literature; (2) An Outline of a Theoretical Description for a Process Model; (3) A Mental Encoding Experiment Relating to Troubleshooting, and (4) An Experiment on Heuristics Used in Troubleshooting. In all, some 33 publications pertaining to behavioral aspects of troubleshooting were reviewed, in addition to over 60 other papers dealing with mental encoding and with heuristics. A theoretical description of a process model problem space in mathematical terms was developed and outlined quantitatively, using tensor analysis. Next, a heuristical process model, which is the qualitative counterpart of such a mathematical model was described. Finally, a discussion of the relative merits of each model, in view of man's cognitive limitations, was presented.

28Investigating The Mechanisms Underlying Sleep Problems And Links To Mental Ill Health In Autistic Young People

By

An estimated 50-80% of autistic people experience sleep problems starting in early childhood. Autistic people also experience high rates of mental health problems. Evidence from the general population suggests that sleep and mental health influence each other bidirectionally. However, findings about this relationship in the autistic population have thus far been limited by small sample sizes and lack of longitudinal evaluation. Through secondary analysis of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, total n~14,000) dataset, we aim to longitudinally characterise trajectories of sleep and mental health problems from childhood to late adolescence. We will use latent growth curve modelling to characterise and compare trajectories of parent-reported sleep problems and internalising difficulties (a proxy for mental ill health from the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire; SDQ) between autistic and non-autistic subgroups. We also aim to use Parallel Process Latent Class Growth Analysis (PP-LCGA) to classify joint trajectories of sleep problems and internalising difficulties into meaningful subtypes of symptom trajectories in the autistic sub-sample.

29Behavioral Mechanisms Linking Maternal Mental Health To Infant RSA Reactivity In Real-world Settings

By

Infants of mothers with anxiety and depression often show dysregulated RSA, compromising their ability to manage stress and develop socio-emotional resilience (Cole et al., 2017; Conradt & Ablow, 2010). Additionally, maternal anxiety and depression are associated with reduced sensitivity and responsiveness (Edwards et al., 2012; Goodman, 2007; Field, 2018). However, less is known about how maternal mental health affects specific regulation behaviors mothers use to soothe their infants at home. For example, mothers with depression may be less likely to approach or pick up their infants , common responses to infant distress in everyday settings (Bornstein et al., 2017). Most prior studies have been conducted in lab settings where proximity and holding behaviors are restricted. Thus, the current work examines the mechanisms by which maternal mental health affects real-time infant physiological regulation and specific regulation behaviors, including proximity and holding in real world settings.

30The Relationship Between Mindfulness And Mental Health During The COVID-19 Pandemic: Exploring Sleep And Emotional Regulation As Potential Mechanisms Of Action.

By

Given that the COVID-19 pandemic and its repercussions have caused increases in levels of depression, anxiety and psychological distress (Rodríguez-rey et al., 2020; Vindegaard & Benros, 2020; Wang et al., 2019, 2020), it is promising to investigate the mechanisms underlying the relationship between mindfulness and mental health of the general population during this crisis. This study aims to examine the relationship between mindfulness and mental health outcomes, namely depression, anxiety and psychological distress, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, this study will investigate whether the relationships between mindfulness trait and levels of depression, anxiety and psychological distress are mediated by the use of emotional regulation strategies (i.e. cognitive reappraisal, rumination and suppression) and sleep problems, as well as explore whether the effects of mindfulness on sleep is mediated by rumination.

32Differential Impacts Of Parenting Styles On Adolescent Mental Health: Emotion Regulation And Gender As Key Mechanisms

By

This study examines the effects of four parenting styles—physical punishment, verbal punishment, positive involvement, and positive parenting—on the mental health of adolescents aged 13–15 (specifically, depression, anxiety, and externalizing problems), both directly and indirectly through the mediation of adolescent emotion regulation. It also explores whether these effects differ by gender. The intended sample consisted of 500 adolescent–caregiver dyads for each of the three data collection sites: Bogotá, Colombia; Kathmandu, Nepal; and Cape Town, South Africa. This study is part of the research project Improving Adolescent Mental Health by Reducing the Impact of Poverty (ALIVE), which aims to understand how poverty affects adolescents' mental health directly and indirectly through self-regulation. Accordingly, all participants of this study lived in low-income settings across the three sites. Bootstrapping analysis will be used to assess the direct and indirect effects of the predictor variables on both the mental health outcomes and the mediator. We hypothesize a negative association between physical and verbal punishment and all three mental health outcomes, and a positive association between positive parenting and involvement and those outcomes. Furthermore, we expect adolescent emotion regulation to mediate the effects of parenting styles on mental health. Finally, we anticipate that the associations between parenting styles and adolescent mental health outcomes will differ significantly by gender.

33A Meta-ethnography Of Mental Health Chatbots (2010-2025): Synthesizing Design Mechanisms Of Empathy, Trust, And Autonomy Across Qualitative Studies

By

This meta-ethnographic study synthesizes qualitative research on mental health chatbots (MH-CBs) from 2010 to 2025, addressing the fragmentation of design knowledge in this rapidly evolving field. As MH-CBs transition from script-based to LLM-powered systems, existing qualitative evidence remains scattered across contexts, with design principles and paradoxes unsystematized. This research fills a critical gap by providing the first design-oriented meta-ethnography of MH-CBs qualitative studies. The primary research question explores: How do different studies describe and explain design mechanisms through which MH-CBs achieve empathy, trust, and autonomy support across diverse populations and contexts? What transferable patterns, tensions, and evolutionary paths emerge from these mechanisms? The study employs Noblit and Hare's meta-ethnographic approach to: (1) construct a comprehensive qualitative evidence base spanning 2010-2025; (2) translate concepts across studies to develop a Line-of-Argument synthesis; (3) formulate middle-range design theory using the Design-Mechanism-Outcome (DMO) framework; and (4) produce actionable design frameworks and pattern libraries for publication in Design Studies. Expected outcomes include theoretical contributions to design science through the identification of core design-experience mechanisms and their associated paradoxes/tensions, as well as practical contributions through evidence-based design patterns for MH-CBs development.

35DTIC ADA237952: A Management Project To Determine The Potential Cost Avoidance Due To The Application Of Managed Care Mechanisms On CHAMPUS Inpatient Mental Health Care In Colorado Springs, Colorado

By

Mental health services encompass the treatment for psychoses and substance abuse diagnoses. The demand for mental health services in this country is growing at an annual rate of 15 percent and new represents one quarters of total national health care expenditures. In the military system, CHAMPUS expenditures for mental health services have increased from 19.0 percent of the Champus budget in FY 1987 to 23.3 percent of the total budget in FY 1988. This total increase reflects a 30 percent increase in the inpatient costs and a 19 percent increase in inpatient days in 1988. In FY 1988 alone, CHAMPUS spent over 8 million dollars for mental health care in the Colorado Springs area. To control mental health care costs, many third-party payors have begun to actively apply managed care mechanisms, with positive results. This study examines the current models of managed care mechanisms developed and employed in the civilian sector and the potential cost avoidance that may be realized by their application to CHAMPUS inpatient mental health care in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
