This study examines how animating a viewpoint change in a spatial information system affects a user's ability to build a mental map of the information in the space. The 20 subjects were asked to navigate family trees created in the Pad++ program by clicking on hyperlinks that were represented by yellow arrows. For each family member, subjects saw a single photograph. Above the photograph was the family member's first name and yellow hyperlink arrows with the words parent, child, sibling, and spouse, where appropriate. Two different but comparable family trees were used in the test. Subjects were presented with one family tree with animation and the other family tree without animation. They were given three tasks to perform in each family tree. First, subjects were presented with a series of nine statements about family relationships and asked to navigate the family tree until he/she could say a statement was true or false. The second set of tasks evaluated recall memory, and the third set of tasks evaluated reconstruction ability. Lastly, the subjects were asked to complete two user satisfaction surveys--one about their experience with animation and the other about their experience without animation. Speed and accuracy were measured for each task. The results show that animation improves users' ability to reconstruct the information space, with no penalty on task performance time. The study provides strong evidence for adding animated transitions in many applications with fixed spatial data where the user navigates around the data space. (3 tables, 4 figures, 25 refs.)

"Adapted from "About The National Atlas of the United States of America," by the U.S. Geological Survey: The National Atlas of the United States of America was published in 1970. It was designed to be of practical use to decision makers in government and business, and for planners and research scholars as well as others needing to visualize country-wide distributional patterns and relationships between environmental phenomena and human activities. The National Atlas represents the principal characteristics of the country in 1970, including its physical features, historical evolution, economic activities, sociocultural conditions, administrative subdivisions, and place in world affairs. Various federal agencies, professional organizations, and commercial firms had advocated producing a National Atlas of the United States of America, but the magnitude of the task and the scope of the research required deterred those who would begin it. Late in 1954, the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council established a Committee on the National Atlas of the United States, with representatives from several federal mapmaking agencies. The committee's primary responsibilities were to coordinate all federal agencies that would be involved in producing the atlas and to ensure uniform quality in its cartography. This proved to be a nearly impossible task, and consequently in 1961 the committee terminated itself. In so doing it recommended that the atlas be completed by one federal agency, preferably the Geological Survey in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In March of 1961, the Secretary of the Interior accepted the challenge. Congress appropriated funds to begin work on the National Atlas in 1963, and on reimbursable loan the Library of Congress made available the chief of its Geography and Map Division, Dr. Arch C. Gerlach, to serve as editor. Eighty-four agencies and bureaus appointed liaison officers to the National Atlas Project, base maps were prepared at four scales, and an advisory group of eminent cartographers and geographers collaborated to formulate fundamental design principles and specifications. The first part of the National Atlas is devoted to general reference maps that contain most of the forty-one thousand place names recorded in the index. These maps were included for the convenience of readers wanting basic locational information. In the thematic section of the National Atlas, separate subdivisions deal with the country's physical, historical, economic, and socio-cultural characteristics. The maps in this portion of the atlas represent the relationships between human beings and their environment while offering scientific bases for analyzing the nation's economic development in 1970. The National Atlas proved to be the last paper atlas of this magnitude produced by the federal government."

Two experiments compared the cognitive maps (mental representations of the spatial environment) of first graders, fifth graders and college students, and investigated developmental changes in the ability to manipulate cognitive maps mentally. In the first experiment, subjects were asked to move from stationpoint to stationpoint and at each, to align a sighting tube in the direction of three targets. Half the subjects in each age group performed this task while in direct visual contact with the room, half while enclosed by an opaque screen. The three age groups differed only in the obstructed viewing condition. First graders were less accurate than either fifth graders or college students, suggesting that the spatial memory underlying cognitive maps does not reach its adult-like status until sometime between first and fifth grade. In the second experiment, subjects performed two tasks which tested mental mainpulation. Subjects imagined walking to new stationpoints, making three sighting tube responses based on each imagined location. Then subjects imagined that the room had rotated, making sighting tube responses in terms of the mentally transformed spatial array. Again, half the subjects in each age group were assigned to an obstructed viewing condition. Results showed definite age differences and indicated that complete mental manipulation is a two-stage process. In the first stage a strategy of manipulation is applied to the general spatial relationships contained in the cognitive map. This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract A number of careers involve tasks that place demands on spatial cognition, but it is still unclear how and whether skills acquired in such applied experiences transfer to other spatial tasks. The current study investigated the association between pilot training and the ability to form a mental survey representation, or cognitive map, of a novel, ground-based, virtual environment. Undergraduate students who were engaged in general aviation pilot training and controls matched to the pilots on gender and video game usage freely explored a virtual town. Subsequently, participants performed a direction estimation task that tested the accuracy of their cognitive map representation of the town. In addition, participants completed the Object Perspective Test and rated their spatial abilities. Pilots were significantly more accurate than controls at estimating directions but did not differ from controls on the Object Perspective Test. Locations in the town were visited at a similar rate by the two groups, indicating that controls' relatively lower accuracy was not due to failure to fully explore the town. Pilots' superior performance is likely due to better online cognitive processing during exploration, suggesting the spatial updating they engage in during flight transfers to a non-aviation context.

In this work, elements related to mental models elicitation and analysis are addressed through causal models. Issues related to the need to include indeterminacy in causal relationships through neutrophic cognitive maps are discussed. A proposal for static analysis in neutrosophic cognitive maps is presented. The following activities are included in the proposal: Calculate, measures of centrality, Classify nodes, De-neutrosification, and Ranking nodes. As future works, the incorporation of new metrics of centrality in neutrosophic cognitive maps is proposed. The inclusion of scenario analysis to the proposal is another area of future work.

Cognitive maps are an accumulation of a person's knowledge of the physical arrangements of continents and of the various political and cultural landscapes of the world. This project is premised upon the belief that people comprehend and arrange the world in terms relative to their own experience. Further, it is based upon the theory that there is a relationship between a person's thoughts and their actions. Specifically this study examines the mental maps of the officers from the United States Air Force, Navy and Army. The images of the world as perceived by the cadets, from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, are also part of this project. Two hundred surveys were mailed and one hundred thirty-four were returned for a sixty-seven percent response rate. The tabulation of data from the surveys provided central tendencies and standard deviations for each group. This information was used to construct composite mental maps for each group. The maps not only displayed the geographic characteristics of the countries, (the direction, distance, and size; all relative to the U.S.) but the maps also indicate the groups' composite geopolitical judgments of the studied countries.

Every map depicts both objective realities and subjective elements and is a rich resource for studying the geographic knowledge and values of mapmakers and their societies. This paper considers cognitive mapping research and describes how world maps reflect world images. Cognitive mapping is defined as a process that allows people to acquire, code, store, recall, and manipulate information about the nature of their spatial environment. A history of world mapping and cognitive processes in mapping is presented, and an analysis of how current mental maps of the world are centered, based on a worldwide sample of student sketch maps, is described. Results indicate that sketch maps were either Eurocentric, Sinocentric, or Americentric, and examples of these maps are used to illustrate differences in images and the centering of countries. The English colonial mentality and Eurocentric image of the world still remain dominant in many places, and this suggests a lag time between political change and its reflection in world images. Seven data tables, 25 maps, and a 59-item bibliography are included. (JHP)
