For the BAA 5K, you self select what corral you go in, sothose runners who are least experienced go to the first corral totry and get to the finish line faster. In the first corral, therewere elites mixed in with slower runners.For folks in the second or third corral, they had to pass theslower runners from the first corral. People were even stopping towalk in the first corral, which made it very difficult for thefaster runners who had to dodge and weave around slower folks. Itbecomes frustrating and dangerous.Her goal was to run a personal best there, and she wanted totry and place in her age group, so she wanted the conditions for afast race.For someone who's new to a 5K race, Margaret suggests thefollowing etiquette:All races should have an etiquette guideline with the racekit/bag.For those who are on a run/walk program, during the walkingphase, you should make a signal before you start to walk and moveto the side of the race course. Kari mentions that when doing theGalloway Method, Jeff Galloway suggests to raise your arm to saythat you're slowing down and to go to the side of the course.Properly place yourself in a corral that matches yourability.Kari mentions a book called Runners of North America: A Definitive Guide to theSpecies by Mark Remy that satirically classifies 23different types runners in a humorous way.Margaret talks a bit about body image in her second book.The women's running movement is still so young and new thatmost runners have not really experimented or understood the fullrange of running opportunities that are available.The movement is fixated on the half marathon, but there aremany other distances to choose from.One thing that women has largely ignored is the USATF Masters Track andField movement, which includes shorter distances like the 100-and 200-meter races.You can get tremendously fit by doing shorter distances, andthat suits many women in terms of training.What Margaret learned from the sprinters is that they builtmuscle really well, and older women struggle to keep muscle mass,so it's important to do activities that enhance muscle gain.Sprinters have a bit of a stronger physique, and they look less\"ravaged\" as Margaret puts it. The distance runners seemed to bemore frail because of less upper-body strength and miles takingtheir toll.In terms of body image, she's spoken to quite a few women atwomen's-only races who started out their running careers at higherweights. In Mechanics and Relativity, the reader is taken on a tour through time and space. Starting from the basic axioms formulated by Newton and Einstein, the theory of motion at both the everyday and the highly relativistic level is developed without the need of prior knowledge. The relevant mathematics is provided in an appendix. The text contains various worked examples and a large number of original problems to help the reader develop an intuition for the physics. Applications covered in the book span a wide range of physical phenomena, including rocket motion, spinning tennis rackets and high-energy particle collisions.

The probability operator is derived from first principles for an equilibrium quantum system. It is also shown that the superposition states collapse into a mixture of states giving the conventional von Neumann trace form for the quantum average. The mechanism for the collapse is found to be quite general: it results from the conservation law for a conserved, exchangeable variable (such as energy) and the entanglement of the total system wave function that necessarily follows. The relevance of the present results to the einselection mechanism for decoherence, to the quantum measurement problem, and to the classical nature of the macroscopic world are discussed.

The analysis previously developed in [J. Math. Phys. 55 (2014) 102901] is used to construct systems which hold invariant under N=2 l-conformal Galilei superalgebra. The models describe two different supersymmetric extensions of a free higher-derivative particle. Their Newton-Hooke counterparts are derived by applying appropriate coordinate transformations.

Above a critical concentration a wide variety of peptides and proteins self-assemble into amyloid fibrils which entangle to form percolating networks called hydrogels. Such hydrogels have important applications as biomaterials and in nanotechnology, but their applicability often depends on their mechanical properties for which we currently have no predictive capability. Here we use a peptide model to simulate the formation of amyloid fibril networks, and couple these to elastic network theory to determine their mechanical properties. The simulations reveal that the time-dependence of morphological quantities characterizing the network length scales can be collapsed onto master curves by using a time scaling function that depends on the interaction parameter between the peptides. The same scaling function is used to unveil a universal, non-monotonic dependence of the shear modulus with time. The obtained insight into the structure-function relationship between the peptide building blocks, network morphology and network mechanical properties can aid experimentalists to design amyloid fibril networks with tailored mechanical properties.

We explore quantum mechanical theories whose fundamental degrees of freedom are rectangular matrices with Grassmann valued matrix elements. We study particular models where the low energy sector can be described in terms of a bosonic Hermitian matrix quantum mechanics. We describe the classical curved phase space that emerges in the low energy sector. The phase space lives on a compact Kahler manifold parameterized by a complex matrix, of the type discovered some time ago by Berezin. The emergence of a semiclassical bosonic matrix quantum mechanics at low energies requires that the original Grassmann matrices be in the long rectangular limit. We discuss possible holographic interpretations of such matrix models which, by construction, are endowed with a finite dimensional Hilbert space.

We propose the use of a quantum algorithm to deal with the problem of searching with errors in the framework of two-person games. Specifically, we present a solution to the Ulam's problem that polynomially reduces its query complexity and makes it independent from the dimension of the search space.

We introduce a transverse field Ising model with order N^2 spins interacting via a nonlocal quartic interaction. The model has an O(N,Z), hyperoctahedral, symmetry. We show that the large N partition function admits a saddle point in which the symmetry is enhanced to O(N). We further demonstrate that this `matrix saddle' correctly computes large N observables at weak and strong coupling. The matrix saddle undergoes a continuous quantum phase transition at intermediate couplings. At the transition the matrix eigenvalue distribution becomes disconnected. The critical excitations are described by large N matrix quantum mechanics. At the critical point, the low energy excitations are waves propagating in an emergent 1+1 dimensional spacetime.

Throughout the Coastal Bend, thousands of openings exist in ten fields of occupation experiencing steady expansion and widely considered drivers of the regional economy. Many of these employers offer work-based learning through apprenticeship programs. Others are looking for candidates with two-year technical degrees and often will pay for required courses. These careers are lucrative, in-demand, and provide a great quality of life, after only two years or less of education or training.

However, after invention of general relativity, we are convinced that geometry is physical and effect us in all scale. Hence the geometric formulation of quantum mechanics sought to give a unified picture of physical systems based on its underling geometrical structures, e.g., now, the states are represented by points of a symplectic manifold with a compatible Riemannian metric, the observables are real-valued functions on the manifold, and the quantum evolution is governed by a symplectic flow that is generated by a Hamiltonian function. In this work we will give a compact introduction to main ideas of geometric formulation of quantum mechanics. We will provide the reader with the details of geometrical structures of both pure and mixed quantum states. We will also discuss and review some important applications of geometric quantum mechanics.

I present and discuss a model for the free-for-all passenger boarding which is employed by some discount air carriers. The model is based on the principles of statistical mechanics where each seat in the aircraft has an associated energy which reflects the preferences of the population of air travelers. As each passenger enters the airplane they select their seats using Boltzmann statistics, proceed to that location, load their luggage, sit down, and the partition function seen by remaining passengers is modified to reflect this fact. I discuss the various model parameters and make qualitative comparisons of this passenger boarding model with models which involve assigned seats. This model can also be used to predict the probability that certain seats will be occupied at different times during the boarding process. These results may be of value to industry professionals as a useful description of this boarding method. However, it also has significant value as a pedagogical tool since it is a relatively unusual application of undergraduate level physics and it describes a situation with which many students and faculty may be familiar.

This document is the lecture script of a one-semester course taught at the University of Basel in the Fall semesters of 2012 and 2013 and in the Spring semester of 2015. It is aimed at advanced students of physics who are familiar with the concepts and notations of quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics lectures can often be separated into two classes. In the first class you get to know Schroedinger's equation and find the form and dynamics of simple physical systems (square well, harmonic oscillator, hydrogen atom); most calculations are analytic and inspired by calculations originally done in the 1920s and 1930s. In the second class you learn about large systems such as molecular structures, crystalline solids, or lattice models; these calculations are usually so complicated that it is difficult for the student to understand them in all detail. This lecture tries to bridge the gap between simple analytic calculations and complicated large-scale computations. We will revisit most of the problems encountered in introductory quantum mechanics, focusing on computer implementations for finding analytical as well as numerical solutions and their visualization. Most of these calculations are too complicated to be done by hand. Even relatively simple problems, such as two interacting particles in a one-dimensional trap, do not have analytic solutions and require the use of computers for their solution and visualization. More complex problems scale exponentially with the number of degrees of freedom, and make the use of large computer simulations unavoidable. The course is taught using the Mathematica programming language; however, the concepts presented are readily translated to any other programming language.

We comment on the paper "Critique and correction of the currently accepted solution of the infinite spherical well in quantum mechanics" by Huang Young-Sea and Thomann Hans-Rudolph, EPL 115, 60001 (2016) .

In this study, we solve analytically the Schrodinger equation for a macroscopic quantum oscillator as a central system coupled to a large number of environmental micro-oscillating particles. Then, the Langevin equation is obtained for the system using two approaches: Quantum Mechanics and Bohmian Theory. Our results show that the predictions of the two theories are inherently different in real conditions. Nevertheless, the Langevin equation obtained by Bohmian approach could be reduced to the quantum one, when the vibrational frequency of the central system is high enough compared to the maximum frequency of the environmental particles.

If gravity respects quantum mechanics, it is important to identify the essential postulates of a quantum framework capable of incorporating gravitational phenomena. Such a construct likely requires elimination or modification of some of the "standard" postulates of quantum mechanics, in particular those involving time and measurement. This paper proposes a framework that appears sufficiently general to incorporate some expected features of quantum gravity. These include the statement that space and time may only emerge approximately and relationally. One perspective on such a framework is as a sort of generalization of the S-matrix approach to dynamics. Within this framework, more dynamical structure is required to fully specify a theory; this structure is expected to lack some of the elements of local quantum field theory. If gravity respects quantum mechanics, it is important to identify the essential postulates of a quantum framework capable of incorporating gravitational phenomena. Such a construct likely requires elimination or modification of some of the "standard" postulates of quantum mechanics, in particular those involving time and measurement. This paper proposes a framework that appears sufficiently general to incorporate some expected features of quantum gravity. These include the statement that space and time may only emerge approximately and relationally. One perspective on such a framework is as a sort of generalization of the S-matrix approach to dynamics. Within this framework, more dynamical structure is required to fully specify a theory; this structure is expected to lack some of the elements of local quantum field theory. A longstanding issue in attempts to understand the Everett (Many-Worlds) approach to quantum mechanics is the origin of the Born rule: why is the probability given by the square of the amplitude? Following Vaidman, we note that observers are in a position of self-locating uncertainty during the period between the branches of the wave function splitting via decoherence and the observer registering the outcome of the measurement. In this period it is tempting to regard each branch as equiprobable, but we argue that the temptation should be resisted. Applying lessons from this analysis, we demonstrate (using methods similar to those of Zurek's envariance-based derivation) that the Born rule is the uniquely rational way of apportioning credence in Everettian quantum mechanics. In doing so, we rely on a single key principle: changes purely to the environment do not affect the probabilities one ought to assign to measurement outcomes in a local subsystem. We arrive at a method for assigning probabilities in cases that involve both classical and quantum self-locating uncertainty. This method provides unique answers to quantum Sleeping Beauty problems, as well as a well-defined procedure for calculating probabilities in quantum cosmological multiverses with multiple similar observers.
