Previous studies have shown that the satisfaction of basic psychological needs is associated with a greater sense of meaningfulness in work and everyday life contexts (Autin et al., 2022; Eakman, 2013; Martela et al., 2018). Conversely, need frustration is a predictor of negative psychological outcomes (Campbell et al., 2018; Chen et al., 2015). The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of an acute frustration of self-esteem - one of the basic needs that has not previously been investigated in relation to meaning - on felt meaningfulness and the experience of meaning in life. Two studies found that participants report lower self-esteem (Zadro et al., 2004) and lower meaning in life (Stillman et al., 2009) following social exclusion. We aim to replicate and extend these findings by 1) employing two distinct measures of meaning (experience of meaning in life and perceived meaningfulness in ambiguous stimuli) and 2) showing that the loss of meaning following social exclusion is mediated by frustrated self-esteem. 3) In addition, we will investigate the influence of trait narcissism on self-esteem frustration. For this purpose, we will manipulate state self-esteem using a virtual ball-tossing game (Cyberball Game; Williams & Jarvis, 2006). In the game, participants are randomly allocated to an experimental group (socially excluded by the other players during the game) or to a control group (balanced condition). After playing the game, participants report perceived social exclusion during the game (manipulation check), their state self-esteem and mood. Felt meaningfulness is assessed after reading ambiguous sentences (Zen koans) and self-reports on meaning in life are collected using the Meaning in Life Measure (MILM; Hill et al., 2019). We expect that participants in the experimental group will report lower self-esteem, less meaning in life, and less felt meaningfulness compared to the control group. We hypothesize that self-esteem mediates the effect of social exclusion on measures of meaning. Additionally, we expect that higher trait narcissism will be positively associated with self-esteem frustration following social exclusion.

The average life expectancy of the world population is increasing, but there is no evidence that today's elderly are any healthier in their later years than their parents (WHO, 2018). The healthier way people spend these extra years is an important issue for older people, families and society. It has been confirmed that positive emotions can predict physical and mental health and quality of life of the elderly. Siahpush et al. (2008) pointed out that the elder people with happier mood and higher life satisfaction reported better physical and mental experience and fewer restrictive health problems in the follow-up two years later. In addition, positive emotions have been shown to be associated with cardiovascular health (Boehm & Kubzansky, 2012)and better outcomes for chronic disease. In general, both state and trait positive emotions were strongly associated with health-related benefits(Pressman et al., 2019). Meaning in life has been proved by many studies to be a potential factor in explaining physical health(Czekierda et al., 2017). Meaning in life may influence physical health outcomes through physiological and behavioral mechanisms (Bekenkamp et al., 2014). In particular, a sense of meaning in life may affect the physiological regulation of immune and stress response systems, or may contribute to a person's sense of control, or may be associated with self-efficacy, optimism and positive emotions, which in turn contribute to improved physical health (Roepke et al., 2014). Studies have shown that the elderly with a higher meaning in life tend to have better physical health compared with those with a lower meaning in life (Krause, 2004), and the higher meaning in life is longitudinally correlated with the health promote behaviors of the elderly, such as physical activities (Lampinen et al., 2006). Expressive writing is a guided personal writing exercise designed to improve health by expressing emotions and altering cognitive processes (Lu et al., 2012). As early research showed effects of expressive writing about stressful experiences in improving physical health indicators (Pennebaker & Beall, 1986), some recent studies have verified the effects of expressive writing on different outcome variables in different populations and settings (Lu et al., 2017; Milbury et al., 2017; Rhee, 2018); however, results have been inconsistent. Some researchers found using controlled trials that expressive writing intervention can increase positive emotions of the elderly and they reported higher sense of meaning in life (Baikie et al., 2011; Zheng et al., 2019). However, a meta-analysis found that the expressive writing intervention had no general effect on health or quality-of-life outcomes, and those who experienced low levels of emotional support were more likely to benefit from it (Zachariae & O'Toole, 2015). The main effect model of positive emotions and physical health has been confirmed (Pressman & Cohen, 2005), but the mediating mechanism of the meaning in life as a psychological resource has not been investigated. Scholars generally agree that expressive writing is an economical and convenient way to improve mental health (Pavlacic et al., 2019). Expressive writing intervention may be suitable for self-help intervention programs on elderly people's mental health, but its effect on positive emotions and meaning in life has not been tested yet. The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of writing intervention on positive emotions and meaning in life in Chinese elderly, and to explore the relationship between positive emotions, meaning in life and physical health.

Methods: Using simple random sampling, this study randomly selected 419 participants from the population and conducted data collection and analysis. Results: (1) Shame was positively correlated with creativity (r= 0.14, p <0.01); (2) Self-forgiveness mediated the effect of shame on creativity; (3) Shame influenced creativity through the serial mediation of self-forgiveness and meaning in life. Conclusion: This study reveals the positive impact of shame on creativity and its underlying psychological mechanisms, particularly the serial mediation roles of self-forgiveness and meaning in life. The Offspring

This systematic review will focus on the relationship between psychedelic substance use (e.g., psilocybin, LSD, ayahuasca) and individuals' sense of meaning and purpose in life. Through a comprehensive review of existing empirical studies, the research will provide a narrative analysis of how psychedelics may affect existential well-being. The review will focus on studies using validated measures such as the Purpose in Life Scale (PILS) and the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ) to evaluate the influence of psychedelic experiences on enhancing or altering one's sense of life meaning and purpose.

This preregistration serves as a continuation of our first study (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/8G4V7), with the aim of investigating the role of coherence within meaning in life (MIL) In study 1, we employed an experimental design using vignettes that varied in a sense of coherence. Participants were asked to read the statement and imagine themselves as the person in the statement. In study 2, we are extending this design by incorporating vignettes relating to three MIL components (coherence, purpose, existential mattering). Participants will be presented with one vignette, at high/moderate/low levels of one MIL component, and will be asked to imagine themselves as the person in the statement.

In this study, we ask how frequent exposure to such entertaining media content can strengthen meaning-focused coping, i.e., the ability to find meaning and benefits when facing stressful situations or general hardship, and in turn, perceptions of overall meaning in life.
