In this paper I will illustrate how to extend the capabilities of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets with add-ins created by MATLAB. Excel provides a broad array of fundamental tools but often comes up short when more sophisticated scenarios are involved. To overcome this short-coming of Excel while retaining its ease of use, I will describe how MATLAB's Excel-Builder converts MATLAB functions into Excel macros. The add-ins can be freely distributed and operate solely from Excel. To demonstrate the utility of add-ins, I will describe a project that I am currently working on in Excel that could be enhanced with the add-ins to carry out more sophisticated scenarios. Breast cancer is a disease that accounts for a disturbingly large number of deaths in females each year. Its prevalence is a topic of concern to all of us since it can affect our families, friends, and coworkers. Although mammographic screening is the most effective method currently available for the early detection of breast cancer, it is far from being an infallible procedure. Mammographic reading is error prone, partly because of the complexity of the task and partly because of the variability in human performance. Computers offer high reproducibility, and when used as an adjunct by the radiologist, may improve diagnostic accuracy and thus the mammographic screening process. The goal of this research was to create using MATLAB version 4.2 (UNIX) and the MATLAB Image Processing Toolbox a menu-based, mouse-driven, and keyboard interactive Mammography Image Processing Program that would support the future research and development of complex segmentation, feature extraction, and classification algorithms. McCall's software quality factors are used on a general level to assess the program's operational characteristics, ability to undergo change, and adaptability to new environments. An important criteria driving this research was to build a platform that would provide full source code accountability so that errors in earlier image processing stages could be fixed and not allowed to propagate through to later stages.

This report presents the Signal Processing and Communications (SPC) software package. SPC is an interactive package designed to provide the user with a series of data manipulation tools which use MATLAB version 4 graphical interface controls. SPC includes various filtering techniques, AutoRegressive (AR) and linear Moving Average AutoRegressive (ARMA) modeling methods, speech processing and communication functions. SPC can be used in the classroom to illustrate and to reinforce basic concepts in signal processing and communications. It allows the user to concentrate on the principles presented in class instead of the details related to software usage. It can also be used as a basic analysis and modeling tool for research in signal processing. SPC was designed for Electrical Engineering applications. As a result, it is well suited to reinforce basic concepts presented in the following courses offered at the Naval Postgraduate School: EC 4410: Speech Processing, EC 4420: Modern Spectral Estimation, EC 3420: Statistical Digital Signal Processing, EC 3400: Digital Signal Processing, EC 2500: Communication Theory. Recent applications in remote areas need low-cost source of power. Standalone PV system could assure this power. This paper includes the effect of variation of parameters of PV panel model in MATLAB/Simulink. This build model is based on mathematical equations of the equivalent circuits which consists of a current source, series resistance, and parallel resistance along with a diode. The model is built for the predetermination of nature of the Solar-PV module for different radiation, temperature and other physical parameters. Moreover, PV-array system has been studied in the given research work. For the validation of Simulink results, a real time set also has been studied. With the continued increase in power of the modern computer, more computational problems are tractable via computer simulation, leading to fast production of data, analysis, and quantitative solutions. Discrete three dimensional analyses, including those involving computational fluid dynamics, now show even more promise as the time required to meet solutions has been shown, in some instances, to be on the order of hours and days rather than weeks or months for the same problem. As a means to exploit such computational power, a MATLAB algorithm has been developed for use with computational meshes in applications requiring the rotation of a mesh about an axis. The algorithm, called ROTATESTL, has been developed such that any number of original mesh files in stereolithography file format can be rotated by any number of angular deflections about specified rotation axes. The algorithm is platform portable and runs on both Windows and Linux operating systems supporting MATLAB 7.

This report describes a proof-of-concept study on integrating a Monte Carlo particle simulation package called GEANT4 with MATLAB technical computing software to build a radiological simulation capability to test and evaluate radiological source localisation algorithms developed in MATLAB. The purpose of this report is to document what was learnt during this project, including alternative approaches that were considered; useful instructions and tips; and bugs and pitfalls, so that these can benefit anyone who is undertaking to extend this work.

This thesis formulates the full nonlinear equations of motion for determining the stability of helicopter coupled rotor-fuselage motion utilizing MATLAB(registered)'s Symbolic Math Toolbox. Using the extended symbolic processor toolbox, the goal of this work was to eliminate the time consuming process of convening Fortran or C code generated by the symbolic processor, MAPLE(registered) into a MATLAB(registered) useable format where it is further incorporated into an S-function' to be used in the dynamic simulation environment. The formulation of the equations of motion utilized in this process is unique in that it uses the complete set of nonlinear terms in the equations of motions without utilizing ordering schemes, small angle assumptions, linearizing techniques, or other simplifying assumptions. After derivation, the equations of motion are numerically integrated using the dynamic simulation software SIMULINK(registered) and a time history plot is generated of blade and fuselage motion. The equations of motion are regenerated with each time step allowing the adjustment of characteristic structural, blade and dampening properties. These time traces can be used to explore the effects of damping nonlinearities, structural nonlinearities, active control, individual blade control, and damper failure on ground resonance.

This document outlines the Helicopter Slung Load Simulation (HSLSIM) Toolbox which is a set of utilities for the simulation, analysis and display of the flight-dynamic response of helicopters with various external load configurations within the MATLAB(Registered trademark) software environment. Instructions and examples are provided for its operation and subsequent modifications. The helicopter studied is the CH-47D, with the load types including rectangular and cylindrical containers as well as plate and airfoil shapes.

The Test and Engineering Directorate at NASA John C. Stennis Space Center developed an interest to study the modeling, evaluation, and control of a liquid hydrogen (LH2) and gas hydrogen (GH2) mixer subsystem of a ground test facility. This facility carries out comprehensive ground-based testing and certification of liquid rocket engines including the Space Shuttle Main engine. A software simulation environment developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK (M/S) will allow NASA engineers to test rocket engine systems at relatively no cost. In the progress report submitted in February 2004, we described the development of two foundation programs, a reverse look-up application using various interpolation algorithms, a variety of search and return methods, and self-checking methods to reduce the error in returned search results to increase the functionality of the program. The results showed that these efforts were successful. To transfer this technology to engineers who are not familiar with the M/S environment, a four-module GUI was implemented allowing the user to evaluate the mixer model under open-loop and closed-loop conditions. The progress report was based on an udergraduate Honors Thesis by Ms. Jamie Granger Austin in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Tulane University, during January-May 2003, and her continued efforts during August-December 2003. In collaboration with Dr. Hanz Richter and Dr. Fernando Figueroa we published these results in a NASA Tech Brief due to appear this year. Although the original proposal in 2003 did not address other components of the test facility, we decided in the last few months to extend our research and consider a related pressurization tank component as well. This report summarizes the results obtained towards a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the evaluation and control of the hydrogen mixer subsystem model and for the pressurization tank each taken individually. Further research would combine the two components - mixer and tank, for a more realistic simulation tool.

In this article, we present a comparative study between pulse width modulation (PWM) and neural space vector modulation (NSVM) strategy associated with a neuro-sliding mode control (NSMC) of stator reactive and stator active power command of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). The obtained results showed that, the proposed NSMC with NSVM strategy have rotor current with low harmonic distortion and low powers ripples than PWM strategy.
