Reported are the results of a pilot study which attempted to determine general patterns of common course content for scientists and engineers, and what specific course content would be of most value to them. Questionnaires were mailed to biologists, chemists, physicists, and engineers in nine states. Over two hundred of these respondents were personally interviewed. An item analysis was made for each course in each specialization. Some of the significant trends noted in the study include: (1) identical course recommendations for different specializations might involve entirely different content and emphasis, (2) related specializations did not always recommend the same topics, (3) mathematicians were generally less selective than scientists and engineers in judging the importance of topics, (4) predictions were made for increased use of computers and applied statistics, and (5) most respondents wanted courses to integrate theory and applications. Ten- tatively entitled Mathematics Seminar for Scientists and Engineers, the course is designed for persons who have earned college credit in mathematics courses but who have lost proficiency through dis- use of the skills once acquired. The usual limitations of overt personnel status for an off-campus course at Headquarters Building will not apply. Because this non- credit course is being arranged under a special contract, GWU will not require registration data on individuals nor will the names of those attending be furnished to the University. By this special ar- rangement, personnel qualified for this course need not be denied attendance solely because of cover problems. Form 73 (Request for Internal Training) will be used for registration. They should be sent to the Registrar, OTR. The class will meet weekly from 1715 to 1945 on Tuesday, 8 October, in Room 6F-21. Mathematics Seminar for Scientists and Engineers is designed to prepare students to become currently qualified for enrollment in specific credit courses offered by local universities. A student might anticipate a schedule similar to the following: Fall & Winter 1963 - Mathematics Seminar for Sci- entists and Engineers.. b. Spring 1964 - Calculus II and III (continuation of non- credit seminar outlined above). c. Fall 1964 - Individual enrollment in GW University Mathematics 111; Mathematics for Engineers and Physicists or equivalent (3 hours credit). d. In Exeter (ALM 2, 1995), Wolfgang Schloeglmann and the author presented some results of their research. One of these results is a useful metaphor: Teaching mathematics to engineers and scientists who have finished their university studies and have worked for many years in, for example, industry, is structurally similar to the technology transfer from a highly industrialized country in Europe to a so called Third World or developing country in Africa. If this metaphor is correct, it is useful: people are able to learn something about chances, problems and mistakes. (Contains 11 references.) (Author/ASK)

It is suggested to teach Mathematics for engineers based on development of mathematical intuition, thus,  combining conceptual and operational approaches. It is proposed to teach main mathematical concepts based on discussion of carefully selected case studies following solving of algorithmically generat- ed problems to help mastering appropriate mathematical tools. The former component helps development of mathematical intuition; the latter applies means of adaptive instructional  technology to improvement of operational skills. Proposed approach is applied to teaching uniform convergence and to knowledge generation using Computer Science object-oriented methodology.
