An historic newspaper that Mark Twain used to write for's been reviv ed. Based in Virginia City, Nevada--the Territorial Enterprise was one of the most prestigious newspapers in the West during the late 1800s. A young reporter named Samuel Clemens worked there from 1862 to 1864. It's there that he first assumed his famous pen name--Mark Twain. The Territorial Enterprise went out of print in 1893 though, and people tried unsuccessfully to bring it back more than once during the twentieth century. The last time it was printed was in the 1980s. But Capitol Publishing Group's giving it another shot. It revived The Territorial Enterprise this week in Carson City, Nevada. It's mostly an online publication, but there'll be a printed version once a month too. While Twain was a reporter and published mostly hard news, he did publish a fair amount of fictional pieces for the paper too... And some historians say its THERE that he perfected the art of the Western tall-tale, which he became so famous for. While the inaugural edition of the new Territorial Enterprise DID have hard news in it--to keep with tradition, it also included a Twain-like fictional piece. And the new editors say--to keep with tradition--they plan on sprinkling more fictional stories like that in the paper from time-to-time too.

Auburn University Profiles was a weekly radio program produced by Auburn University's Office of University Relations. Each daily program covered a topic of university, local, or national interest. Programs were about 4 1/2 minutes long and featured students, faculty, administrators, visiting scholars and celebrities.

Presented on September 23, 1985 at Quarry Farm. James M. Cox is Professor Emeritus of English at Dartmouth College.  He is the author of Recovering Literature's Lost Ground: Essays in American Autobiography (1989) and Mark Twain: The Fate of Humor (2002).  He is the editor of the Penguin edition of Mark Twain's Life on the Mississippi . My talk will focus on Mark Twain's progress from being a real outlaw (a traitor and a deserter) to his invention of a boy outlaw, a true fugitive, writing through a deviant language to break the laws of literature.  I will try to show how Mark Twain envisions slavery as the very metaphor for civilization and (how) the lie was his great means of shielding himself, and the world from the violence of civilized truth .

Mark Twain - A Complaint About Correspondents

Presented on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 in Historic Cowles Hall on the Elmira College Campus. Obsession is frequently an overlooked focus of major literary works.  In novels like Moby Dick , The Picture of Dorian Gray , The Aspern Papers , The Great Gatsby , and many others, characters are often driven to extremes by their various obsessions over various objects or concerns.  But sometimes obsession infiltrates the author's audience as well.  One manifestation of this is when a reader's relation to and obsession with a famous author leads to a powerful yearning to collect: a desire to gather and accumulate almost anything ever owned or scribbled by the celebrity author.  One theme of my own novel The Hemingway Files  is just this desire: in particular, a wealthy collector intent on purchasing Hemingway manuscripts and Twain letters.  Such obsessive collecting is not unusual among bibliophiles.  But why do we collect?  How does one begin the long journey of any sort of collecting?  And what are the pros and cons of obsessive connection to iconic writers like Hemingway and Mark Twain?  This lecture will consider how we get drawn into such compulsive relations with these long dead writers and other celebrities: including my own lengthy journey into the heart of Mark Twain studies, and into the composition of my novel, The Hemingway Files . Presented on Wednesday, May 13 in the Barn at Quarry Farm.  In the summer of 1883 close friends Joe Twichell and Samuel Clemens fell out over a piece of unwanted publicity the minister had published in the Hartford Courant  - an incident with Quarry Farm origins.  Clemens sent the clipping to relatives, scrawling on it: "I send this to beg that at least you folks will avoid this damned fool's example."  It was one of several events that stand in relief against the two men's normally loving association, incidents in which Twichell stepped over lines of behavior firmly established by Clemens - in his own mind, at least.  But unlike the stormy rifts with others, those with Twichell always reached some kind of a resolution.  Steve Courtney explores the origins of these blowups and what they meant for his famous friendship. Steve Courtney has been a journalist for more than thirty years, and was a writer and editor for the Hartford Courant  for more than twenty.  He now works at the Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford as a publicist and guide.  He is the author of Joseph Hopkins Twichell: The Life and Times of Mark Twain's Closest Friend (2008), "The Loveliest Home There Ever Was": The Story of Mark Twain's Home in Hartford  (2011), and Mark Twain's Hartford  (2016).  He is co-editor of The Civil War Letters of Joseph Hopkins Twichell: A Chaplain's Story  (2006) and  The Letters of Mark Twain and Joseph Hopkins Twichell (2017).

Presented on Wednesday, May 25 in the Barn at Quarry Farm. Mark Twain was unquestionably among the most prolific and hardest working authors of his era.  But did Twain ever really "work" at writing?  He consistently identified his creative activities more closely with "play" then with "work" and may even have conceived of writing as antithetical to labor.  In this lecture, Professor Wonham will examine Twain's understanding of these sometimes operated, sometimes interchangeable categories as they operate in and through his fiction. Henry Wonham is Professor and Head of the Department of English at the University of Oregon.  He is the author of several books, including Mark Twain and the Art of the Tall Tale  and Playing the Races: Ethnic Caricature and American Literary Realism , both published by Oxford University Press.

Presented on Wednesday, May 25 in the Barn at Quarry Farm. Mark Twain was unquestionably among the most prolific and hardest working authors of his era.  But did Twain ever really "work" at writing?  He consistently identified his creative activities more closely with "play" then with "work" and may even have conceived of writing as antithetical to labor.  In this lecture, Professor Wonham will examine Twain's understanding of these sometimes operated, sometimes interchangeable categories as they operate in and through his fiction. Henry Wonham is Professor and Head of the Department of English at the University of Oregon.  He is the author of several books, including Mark Twain and the Art of the Tall Tale  and Playing the Races: Ethnic Caricature and American Literary Realism , both published by Oxford University Press.
