1SUFB 204: Leading By Example For Marine Conservation

By

Marine Conservation is a very rewarding career and you will recall that I've said this before; however, this is not an easy field in which we work. You will soon find out that the environment is not always the top priority for governments or businesses to act unless it causes severe and consistent economic damage to the point where the cost outweighs the amount of money that someone can gain from it. Combatting this sort of stigma requires protest, which in itself can be done in many ways. Protests have been used to make governments and/or the public aware that a particular group of people, or a person, would like something to change or stop something for changing. Protests can be conducted peacefully and others can be conducted violently. Each type is designed to create awareness and stop something from happening. Sea Shepherd Society protests are done by any means necessary. Their protests are more aggressive than others. Not everyone, including me, agrees with their methods, but they are effective (do an internet search on Japanese Whaling over the past 5 years and you will notice Sea Shepherd is consistently interrupting their catches every year by ramming into whaling boats and getting in their way). Scientists from across Canada marched in Ottawa (the capital) to protest the attempt of the conservative Canadian government to silence its scientists. The march was peaceful and gained national media coverage bringing light to a problem affecting the environment. Not all protests are for the environment. Recently, NFL' San Francisco 49er Quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, sat down during the American National anthem to protest the violence of police against minorities and the lack of action that would reduce and eventually eliminate the issue. Colin got criticized for the method in which he protested as many said that he was disrespecting the flag and the people who fought under the flag to protect his freedom. He was called spoiled, a coward among other things. Some of the media even said that he wasn't \"black\" enough to realize the issue that was happening and shouldn't be leading the cause in the NFL. However, Colin was leading a movement that would turn into others sitting, kneeling, and interlocking arms as a team. The protest spread across the NFL, one of America's biggest sports, and other sports spanning various ethnicities too. the protest went from criticizing Colin for his actions to many more people discussing the issue he was protesting in the first place. An issue that may not be solved in one day or over many years, but is now being discussed again through Colin's actions. Colin also pledged $1 million dollars to various charities that were working on the issues at hand and other athletes pledged undisclosed amounts in support. One quarterback's actions has led to a conservation continuing and some important work being supported. It started with one person and led to action. In another recent protest, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe conducted the largest protest in First Nation history to stop the construction of a pipeline north of there land. They were concerned about the contamination of their land and drinking water through future spills that may take place. They sued the Army Corp of Engineers, which was overseeing the construction to stop the action entirely until a proper assessment was conducted and the assessment methods were done properly. First Nations going up against the government is not an easy fight; however, the protest caused a temporary halting of construction until the court decided what to do. The court eventually decided to let the construction happen; however, President Obama gave an executive order to stop all construction until further notice. Do you think the President would have known about this situation had it not been for the protests? I think not. The point of this episode is to begin to lead for Marine Conservation. You don't have to protest for everything, but you don't have to wait for a group of people to support you to create change. In fact, Marine Conservation often starts with a leader inspiring people to create change. Just look at Dr. Sylvia Earle, who continues to inspire other Marine Scientists and Conservationists around the world through her work.Become a leader for the Ocean and Speak Up For Blue!Do you want to talk about how you can pursue a career in Marine Conservation? 3Exploring The Role Of Science Communication In Marine Science And Conservation

By

Science communication plays a crucial role in ocean conservation. Andrew emphasizes the significance of science communication in marine science and conservation. The lack of public understanding of the ocean and its conservation issues prompted Andrew to become a science communicator. He highlights the historical reluctance of scientists to communicate with the public due to concerns about misrepresentation by journalists. However, with the advent of technology and various platforms, science communication has evolved and become more accessible. The host believes that science communication is not just about posting on social media but about building relationships with the audience and conveying messages effectively. They argue that science communication is essential for creating awareness, inspiring action, and effecting change in marine conservation. Andrew encourages support for science communicators and predicts a promising future for the profession. The host, Andrew Lewin, emphasizes the significance of science communication in his own journey as a science communicator in marine science and conservation. He explains that science communication is the reason why he changed his profession and started the How to Protect the Ocean podcast.According to Lewin, science communication plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between scientists and the public. In the past, scientists were hesitant to communicate their research outside of their professional circles due to concerns about their words being manipulated or misinterpreted by journalists. However, this lack of communication resulted in a limited understanding of the ocean among the general public.Lewin believes that science communication is essential for raising awareness about marine conservation issues and inspiring action. By effectively communicating scientific knowledge and research findings, science communicators can engage the public and encourage behavior changes that contribute to the protection of the ocean. The podcast episode also highlights the growth of science communication as a profession in the field of marine science and conservation. Lewin notes that more organizations, including government departments and private companies, are hiring professionals in sustainability and communications to effectively convey their messages and engage with their audiences.Furthermore, Lewin emphasizes that science communication is not limited to social media platforms. While social media plays a significant role in content dissemination, science communication involves various mediums such as press releases, blogs, campaigns, and podcasts. The goal of science communication is to convey a message and inspire action, whether it is through educating the public, influencing policy decisions, or encouraging support for conservation initiatives. In conclusion, science communication is recognized as a vital component of marine conservation. It serves as a bridge between scientists and the public, enabling the dissemination of scientific knowledge and inspiring action to protect the ocean. The growth of science communication as a profession highlights its increasing importance in effectively conveying messages and engaging with audiences in the field of marine science and conservation. The future of science communication is bright and promising, with new trends and styles emerging. As mentioned in the podcast episode, science communication has evolved significantly over the past few decades, thanks to advancements in technology and the rise of social media platforms. Creators from various backgrounds are now using these platforms to share their knowledge and passion for science, particularly in the field of marine conservation. One of the exciting aspects of the future of science communication is the emergence of new trends and styles. Content creators are finding innovative ways to engage their audience and deliver scientific information in a captivating manner. For example, some creators use vlogs to document their field studies, taking viewers on virtual field trips and providing a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a marine biologist. Others incorporate gaming elements into their content, combining entertainment with educational messages about ocean conservation. With the increasing popularity of platforms like TikTok and Instagram, science communication is becoming more accessible and appealing to a wider audience. Short-form videos and visually appealing content are gaining traction, allowing creators to convey scientific concepts in a concise and engaging manner. This trend is likely to continue, as it caters to the fast-paced nature of social media consumption.Furthermore, the future of science communication will see the integration of larger trends and issues into the messaging. Creators will not only focus on sharing scientific knowledge but also on addressing pressing environmental concerns such as plastic pollution, overfishing, and climate change. By connecting scientific information to real-world problems, science communicators can inspire action and encourage individuals to make a positive impact on the environment. It is important to support and follow these emerging trends and styles in science communication. By engaging with and sharing content from these creators, we can help amplify their messages and reach a broader audience. Additionally, providing feedback and encouragement to science communicators can motivate them to continue their important work.In conclusion, the future of science communication in marine conservation is promising. With new trends and styles emerging, content creators are finding innovative ways to engage audiences and deliver scientific information. By supporting and following these creators, we can contribute to the growth and impact of science communication in protecting our oceans.

4SUFB 599: How Marine Conservation Job Search Is Like Being A Salesperson

By

Searching for Jobs in Marine Conservation can be daunting, frustrating and depressing. We get up in the morning, find a job, then apply to it thinking that we will get an interview...but nothing. This process is repeated daily and your passion dwindles every month you are not working in Marine Conservation. However, it doesn't need to be this way. Searching for a job is similar to being a salesperson, where getting the job is the sale of a product/service. You can cold call people by applying to a job without any of the personnel knowing who you are just like you get phone calls from call centres trying to sell you a product. The chance of getting a sale or a job is slim. However, if you build a relationship with the client/employer, then you can show them who you are, become someone they trust and respect. Become someone they think about when there is an opportunity available. Building relationships is not the same as applying for a job blindly. Building relationship is about networking. Networking is one of the most important aspects of job hunting.Networking is not about adding people to your \"Contacts\" App. It's about building relationships. You are selling yourself by seeking out a job, but you don't want to ask right away. You want to be patient and bring value to the person. Overtime, an opportunity may arise where you end up getting a job in the opportunity you want. I go into more detail about building a networking and seeking a job. during this episode. This episode is building on top of last week's episode on Marine Conservation career. Do you have questions about your career? A top marine biologist has urged Thailand’s government to speed up conservation plans for the dugong, an imperiled sea mammal, after their death toll for the year in Thai waters has already climbed to a record 21. A top marine biologist wants Thailand’s government to speed up conservation plans for the dugong.Experts believe only 250 of the sea mammals are left in Thai waters.A three-year master plan for dugong conservation is awaiting Cabinet approval. The plan is called the “Marium Project” after the name given a rescued ailing baby dugong who became celebrated in Thailand after images of veterinarians embracing and feeding her with milk and seagrass spread across social media.Dugongs are a species of marine mammal similar to a manatee and can grow to about 11 feet in length. 9SUFB 228: How To Write A Cover Letter For Marine Science And Conservation Careers

By

When I first started writing cover letters for the jobs that I wanted, I made them less than one page and they consisted of introducing myself and telling the person to which I was sending my application that my resume was attached. I had no idea that it was the wrong way of writing a cover letter. It wasn't until a friend showed me how to write a proper cover letter that I was able to get interviews from my applications. The conversion was quite amazing. I applied to less jobs during the year (4 jobs) and got 3 interviews, which is better than the previous record of 1 in 400. Unfortunately, it was 6 years until I discovered how to write a proper cover letter and resume (I will discuss resumes next week) that I was able to focus my career path because I could finally get closer to the jobs I wanted. This style of writing cover letters is quite a bit of work, but your chances of getting the interview are much higher. Take a listen to the episode to find out how to write the proper cover letter for Marine Science and Conservation. Are you looking to change the way you eat for a better health and environment? 13SUFB 707: Business Tactics To Get A Career In Marine Conservation

By

There are many people out there that are posting about how they can't find a job in Marine Conservation. Finding a job in this field is probably the toughest thing out there for aspiring Marine Conservationists. There are more people graduating with similar degrees, but job availability doesn't seem to grow in the same way. This problem is why I feel that applicants need to be unique and provide their prospective employers with something the employers need (perhaps that they never thought they needed). Uniques skill sets, experiences, social media profiles could be what gets you that first job or it could reinvent your career (like it did mine). I am not saying that the strategy I present here will work for everyone, but it will work for some. It will work for the people that will put in the work to build something special, something unique.Let me know what you have to say about the strategy that I propose in the episode. 15SUFB 1114: Run A Marathon To Spark Her Career In Marine Conservation

By

Amelia Hursham is in a difficult spot. She is about to graduate with her undergraduate degree in Marine Biology; however, she will be completing her last semester during COVID...from home, as she is mandated to do online virtual learning. It's not ideal, but we are in a pandemic and it is better to be safe.Unfortunately, Amelia will miss out on networking with the faculty and other students; she had a class trip/field course in Mexico canceled, and she cannot work on an oyster project in the field like she has been doing for the past 2 years. Amelia wants to maximize her Marine Biology work experience as she prepares for her career, but she feels like she needs something that will provide her with the Networking opportunity and work experience that will solidify her experience. In comes Operation Wallacea, a science trip that will provide her with the experience she needs. Only one slight problem, the cost is 5,000 British Pounds and out of her budget. She is not going to let that stop her from attaining her dream. Amelia is going to fundraise for the money which will not only help her pay for the cost of the course but also provide her with the experience in fundraising that could help her in the next job opportunity that comes her way.  And she is going to raise it by running a Marathon (26.2 miles)!!!You can help Amelia achieve her dream by donating to her Go Fund Me campaign. If you are not in the position to donate yourself, then feel free to share this with some people who might. Go Fund Me Link: http://bit.ly/3pOaSlvFollow Amelia on Instagram as she trains for her marathon: https://www.instagram.com/amelia.runs.a.marathon/Want To Talk Oceans? Ocean Talk Friday is usually about two people (myself and Nathan Johnson) talking about 4 to 5 articles covering Ocean News that we think you should know about; however, Nathan was a bit busy this week and I decided to switch things up. I wanted to continue covering the theme of grassroots marine conservation since I think it is going to become one of the focuses on Speak Up For Blue. Here are 3 American Grassroots Conservation Projects I covered in this episode (I will cover more international projects as I find them: please email me if you have a project in mind - [email protected]).1) Save Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge;2) How you can ensure Climate Change remains a priority for the new US federal administration; and,3) Stop Killing Fish by stop fertilizing so much!Enjoy the  podcast!

They highlight the past dominance of broadcasting networks like Fox, CBC, CNN, and CBS as the primary platforms for documentaries and radio programs, limiting access to those within these networks. However, the emergence of podcasting and YouTube has democratized content creation, allowing anyone to share their perspectives and opinions. This shift has resulted in a more diverse range of voices being heard. While acknowledging the benefits of this democratization, the speakers also address its drawbacks. They acknowledge that not all opinions expressed may serve the greater good. Nevertheless, they maintain an overall positive outlook on the ability for everyone to have a platform to share their thoughts and ideas.Furthermore, the speakers explore how technology has facilitated direct support for creators and projects. They highlight platforms like Patreon, which enable individuals to financially support specific creators, as well as charitable foundations that allow contributions to projects outside of larger charitable organizations. This direct support has provided independent creators with increased opportunities and resources to continue their work.Overall, this episode underscores how technology has democratized the ability for people to express their opinions and create content. It has opened up new avenues for sharing ideas and has empowered individuals to directly support creators and projects. In this episode, the speaker emphasizes the importance of implementing conservation measures to prevent the overuse of natural resources and protect the environment. They acknowledge that human nature, driven by the desire for a more Western standard of living, has placed increased pressure on the environment. Technological advancements have enabled humans to exploit natural resources more extensively, necessitating the need for conservation measures. The speaker highlights the existence of customary practices and traditions that demonstrate respect for the environment and resource provision. For instance, they mention the placement of tupples in certain areas of the ocean or sea, effectively prohibiting access for up to a year. This exemplifies a recognition of the need to limit human impact on the environment. However, the speaker also acknowledges that conservation measures are now more critical than ever due to factors such as climate change. They emphasize the importance of incorporating resilience into environmental management to ensure the sustainability of natural resources. By implementing conservation measures, it is possible to prevent resource overuse and safeguard the environment for future generations. The episode also discusses the role of individuals in supporting conservation efforts. While voting for governments that prioritize conservation is important, the speaker recognizes that this choice may be limited in certain circumstances. However, individuals have the power to contribute to conservation through personal choices, such as donating money to organizations and governments dedicated to protecting the environment. This sense of personal control and contribution instills hope and a sense of purpose in individuals striving to preserve the ocean.Overall, the episode emphasizes the necessity of conservation measures to prevent the overuse of natural resources and protect the environment. It highlights the role of individuals and governments in supporting and implementing these measures, ultimately working towards a sustainable future. In this episode, the importance of building sustainable economic development in the blue economy, particularly through tourism, is mentioned. However, the speaker emphasizes the need for this development to be carried out in a manner that avoids negative impacts on marine resources and the environment. They stress the significance of supporting a sustainable level of tourism that does not lead to increased exploitation of marine resources. It is crucial to avoid overharvesting and ensure that the number of visitors does not have a detrimental effect on the environment. The speaker also emphasizes the uniqueness of the location and the importance of preserving its natural beauty and resources. There is a clear recognition of the potential negative consequences of unsustainable tourism and a strong desire to protect the marine environment.Additionally, the episode discusses the impact of COVID-19 on tourism and the necessity of finding innovative ways to support economic development in the blue economy. The previous model of sustainable financing, reliant on tourism fees, was greatly affected by the lack of tourists during the pandemic. This highlights the importance of exploring alternative methods of support that do not solely rely on tourism.Overall, the episode suggests that while economic development in the blue economy, particularly through tourism, is important, it should be approached with sustainability in mind to avoid negative impacts on marine resources and the environment.

19Work In Marine Science And Conservation By Doing What You Are Good At

By

My Master's advisor used to tell me that I would be great in a technical job within the marine science and conservation field and he was right as at the time I worked in a very technical part of the field as a marine technician and a newly graduated GIS Analyst. But I always pictured myself as someone who was in charge of either a research program or a non-profit organization that helped forward marine conservation through science. It wasn't until I was 15 years into my career that I realized I could do something that I was really good at: speaking to people about my field. Opportunities opened up for me once I started to execute speaking to people about marine science and conservation.   In this episode, I am going to help you with ways that you can use your strengths to apply to marine science and conservation.   Sign up to find out about the audio Ocean Conservation Careers members group: https://bit.ly/38ak7Z8   Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/3NmYvsIConnect with Speak Up For Blue: Website: https://bit.ly/3fOF3Wf Instagram: https://bit.ly/3rIaJSG Twitter: https://bit.ly/3rHZxpc

23The Effects Of Mary Rose Conservation Treatment On Iron Oxidation Processes And Microbial Communities Contributing To Acid Production In Marine Archaeological Timbers.

By

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract The Tudor warship the Mary Rose has reached an important transition point in her conservation. The 19 year long process of spraying with polyethylene glycol (PEG) has been completed (April 29th 2013) and the hull is air drying under tightly controlled conditions. Acidophilic bacteria capable of oxidising iron and sulfur have been previously identified and enriched from unpreserved timbers of the Mary Rose, demonstrating that biological pathways of iron and sulfur oxidization existed potentially in this wood, before preservation with PEG. This study was designed to establish if the recycled PEG spray system was a reservoir of microorganisms capable of iron and sulfur oxidization during preservation of the Mary Rose. Microbial enrichments derived from PEG impregnated biofilm collected from underneath the Mary Rose hull, were examined to better understand the processes of cycling of iron. X-ray absorption spectroscopy was utilised to demonstrate the biological contribution to production of sulfuric acid in the wood. Using molecular microbiological techniques to examine these enrichment cultures, PEG was found to mediate a shift in the microbial community from a co-culture of Stenotrophomonas and Brevunidimonas sp, to a co-culture of Stenotrophomonas and the iron oxidising Alicyclobacillus sp. Evidence is presented that PEG is not an inert substance in relation to the redox cycling of iron. This is the first demonstration that solutions of PEG used in the conservation of the Mary Rose are promoting the oxidation of ferrous iron in acidic solutions, in which spontaneous abiotic oxidation does not occur in water. Critically, these results suggest PEG mediated redox cycling of iron between valence states in solutions of 75% PEG 200 and 50% PEG 2000 (v/v) at pH 3.0, with serious implications for the future use of PEG as a conservation material of iron rich wooden archaeological artefacts.

32SUFB 199: Seeking A Meaningful Career In Marine Science And Conservation

By

Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity to chat with a number of people inquiring over switching their career to one in Marine Science and Conservation. Usually, the people are ranging in age between 30-50 and working in a business/finance field and they just don't find that the their career offers anything of meaning in their lives. They tend to be searching for something where they can create a positive change in the world. These are the people I love to talk to because I know they can offer the Marine Science and Conservation field a great advantage with their unique skills set. Some of you might know that I focus part of Speak Up For Blue on helping people attain a career in Marine Science and Conservation. Most of the people that I help are young, recent graduates who don't know where to begin in their search for a job, let alone building their career. They are also great people to talk to and help as many of them have science backgrounds and looking to do research, monitoring, ect. However, the people between the ages of 30-50 who are switching their careers from business/finance are a key player in Marine Science and Conservation field. I like these people because they provide a unique set of skills and a different mindset on how to approach and project. They are similar to the young science graduates in that they don't know where to begin searching for a career and often think that they have to go back to school to become a marine biologist. This thought process tends to impede people from thinking of switching careers. This is the time where I step in. I always tell people that they don't need to be a scientist to be effective in Marine Science and Conservation. It takes a lot of time and money to invest in becoming a marine scientist. There are enough marine scientists in the world. What you need is to figure out how your skill set that you offer will help the field. If you search the high level positions in non-profit organizations you will find that the Executive Directors, Program Managers and all of the other high level positions, you will find that they consist of lawyers, business people, entrepreneurs, financial people, etc. Those high level positions are attainable and your skill set may fit the description. If you are searching for a Marine Science and Conservation and you are between the ages of 30-50 years old and you are in a different field, then email me at:[email protected] I want to talk to you!Tune into the episode to find out more information. Join the Arbonne Blue Teamhttp://www.speakupforblue.com/teamblueInstagram: @speakupforblueSnapchat: @speakupforblueSUFB Podcast: http://www.speakupforblue.com/podcastSUFB Website: http://www.speakupforblue.com10 Ocean Tips to Conserve the Ocean: http://www.speakupforblue.com/wordpress/sufb_optinpdf

There is a scientific review paper out that was authored by a number of high profiled marine scientists that say we can turn the poor health of the Ocean around by 2050 based on conservation success stories of animals such as the Humpback whale, manatee, and other charismatic ocean species.  That's great news, right?! We will need to double our efforts to fight a number of issues such as climate change, ocean plastic pollution, and overfishing to name a few in order to change the tide on the Oceans. Link To Article: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/apr/01/oceans-can-be-restored-to-former-glory-within-30-years-say-scientistsDo you think we will be able to protect the Ocean by 2050? 39SUFB 232: The Resume For Marine Science And Conservation Careers

By

The sole purpose of a job application is to get to the next step in the job-getting process. There are hundreds, sometimes thousands, of applicants and you have to set your aside apart from the pack. So what do you do?You make sure that you have the best application out there and you ensure the human resource person and/or hiring manager are not forced to make any assumptions on whether you qualify for the position. For example, if you are applying to a position where you will be trawling and are required to identify species and record length and weight, then don't just say that you have experience with trawling, you should elaborate that you are able to identify fish species and some invertebrates (if you have the experience of course, never lie on your application!!!).In this bonus episode, I teach you how to right the perfect resume that will force the person reading it to add you to the interview pile. Enjoy the podcast! Are you looking to change the way you eat for a better health and environment? Start using Arbonne nutrition and health care products that are all natural and environmentally friendly. I use them all the time and their nutrition line has transformed the way I eat and my health.Email me today, [email protected] to find out how you can transform your health. 41SUFB 357: The Struggle To Building A Career In Marine Science And Conservation

By

I read a great article on the Mongabay website that inspired me to discuss it on today's installment of Ocean Talk Friday. The article was about how hard it is for young people to build a career in Conservation. It dives into many of the issues that I see everyday while I consult with people about building their careers: 1) High student debt with low paying jobs; 2) Only unpaid internships available; 3) Often times, people have to pay to earn experience; and, much more. The fact is, building a career in Conservation is one of the hardest things to do in your life. It's not as easy as getting a 4 year degree, graduating and getting hand picked for a job. The reality is that there is more competition for less jobs because of reduced funding (don't forget the fact that every once and a while a government administration will come along and halt any hiring).I felt it necessary to do this podcast because there are ways to help you achieve your dream (it's not a guarantee, but it gets you closer). I tell you the story of my struggle to build my career and how I got to where I am today so that you can learn from my mistakes and understand that there is a process to follow that will help your chances of getting a job and building that career.Enjoy the podcast!!!Let me know what you think of the episode by joining our Facebook Group for the Podcast.Support Speak Up For Blue's Efforts to build a platform to raise awareness for Marine Science and Conservation and help you live for a better Ocean. Contribute to our Patreon Campaign

43SUFB 356: Drones For Marine Conservation With David Johnston

By

Drones in Marine Conservation is quite the hot topic these days. They provide Marine Scientists and Conservationists with so many advantages when studying the marine environment at a much lesser cost than the traditional means of monitoring trends in marine species. For example, the grey seal population off Cape Cod can be counted using video and images collected from a drone compared to scientists renting a plane to do aerial surveys, which could cost 10s of 1000s of dollars. Drones provide more possibilities too.I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. David Johnston, who is the Director of the Marine Robotics and Remote Sensing group at the Duke Nicholas School of Environment. He joined us on the podcast to tell us about the Marine Conservation work that he is doing using drones. The work has taken him and his team all around the world. Take a listen to find out how this wonderful technology can help further Marine Science and Conservation.Enjoy the podcast!!!Let me know what you think of the episode by joining our Facebook Group for the Podcast.Support Speak Up For Blue's Efforts to build a platform to raise awareness for Marine Science and Conservation and help you live for a better Ocean. Contribute to our Patreon Campaign

46SUFB 900: Are All People Who Work In Marine Conservation Equal?

By

Today's episode is focused on an interaction that a friend of mine had on social media recently. Someone said that my friend was not a true scientist if she wasn't collecting data in the field or in a lab. This claim simply isn't true and has no bearing on the issue about which my friend was posting. The fact of the matter is that running an effective Marine Conservation project often requires professionals from all different professionals backgrounds to achieve a common goal. It is unfortunate that some people think otherwise (inside and outside of the industry); however, it is even more important for you to know that it takes all kinds of professionals from across the globe to protect our Oceans. Did you agree with what the person said about scientists? 47SUFB 237: Grassroots Marine Conservation

By

Conservation is about people. It Starts with people. It ends with people. Democratic governments cannot stop the people. Those words may not be that profound, but they are true. A change in government is the US means that ocean conservation is going to become harder to do when compared to the last administration if Trump and his administration plan to do what they said they were going to do. There are also questions as to will he be able to completely ignore climate change even though he doesn't \"Believe in it.\" Time will tell, I guess. The fact remains that if we want to continue to work towards protecting the Oceans, then we will have to do it at the grassroots level and build enough momentum from the bottom to rise to the top where politicians will have no choice but to listen to the majority. I discuss how we can really build grassroots movements by not reinventing the wheel and using the resources that are available to us and partnering with some great organizations to create change from within. Speak Up For Blue will also be creating a tight nit grassroots community that will focus on changing things not only at the government level, but also and the community level. Enjoy the podcast! Are you looking to change the way you eat for a better health and environment? 49SUFB 360: Marine Conservation Career Struggles: 4 Perspectives

By

Marine Conservation Careers is a dream that all of us have that work, or are trying to work, in this field. Two episodes ago, I discussed an article on the struggles people were having trying to get a job. Many of the problems that arose were unpaid internships, pay for work experience and lack of funding. I got some feedback from the Facebook Group on the episode, which was good, but said that I implied that I didn't think people were doing enough. My point of the episode was to offer tips that could help you set yourself apart from the rest of the pack that is seeking jobs; however, I never realized that the yips may not work for everyone and my experience in Marine Conservation Careers is very different from may other people. I wanted to get other people's perspectives who are in the field to give more of a well rounded account of what we have been through building a career in Marine Conservation. I found the people. As some of you may already know, I am producing another podcast show called Marine Conservation Happy Hour, where I get together with @Craken_MacCraic  and @DrScarlettSmash  to talk about the different aspects of Marine Conservation. This episode we talk about Marine Conservation Careers with special guest @marinebrit  to discuss our journeys through the mythical word of building our careers. Three generations of Marine Conservationists open up and rant about the past and present situations and hope for a better future. While having some drinks over the internet happy hour...Enjoy the Podcast!!!Let me know what you think of the episode by joining our Facebook Group for the Podcast.Support Speak Up For Blue's Efforts to build a platform to raise awareness for Marine Science and Conservation and help you live for a better Ocean. Contribute to our Patreon Campaign
