There is a widespread assertion in the literature that the optical Ga lines give much higher abundances than the UV lines. We have determined Ga abundances in HgMn stars taking the observed hyperfine structure of the optical Ga II lines into account. This reduces these abundances to within 0.2 dex of the values from the resonance lines.

To investigate valence imbalance phenomena between the surface and bulk in layered manganites, we analyze an eg-orbital degenerate double-exchange model with surfaces for two types of t2g spin structures. We reconfirm that the surface-induced Friedel oscillations occur in the charged structure and that the number of Mn4+ ions on the surface is larger than that in the bulk. This tendency is found to be more significant, when the eg-electron system has Fermi-surface structures with better nesting properties. The behavior of the Friedel oscillations depends on the nesting properties of the Fermi-surface curves along the direction of the oscillations, and not on the dimension of the system itself. We believe that these results will be useful for the development of high-efficiency cathodes in Li-ion batteries and catalysts.

Substantial improvements in magnesium-manganese dioxide (Mg/MnO2) dry battery performance were obtained by thermally insulating the battery to retain the heat evolved during discharge. The influence of discharge temperature at 130F and 220F on discharge capacity of individual cells is assessed relative to 74F capacity between the 25 and 100 hour discharge rate. Magnesium Batteries BA-4386/PRC-25 (A2 Section), surrounded by varying thicknesses of thermal insulation, were discharged at a constant 5 Watt drain at operating temperatures varying from minus 25 to plus 160F. Performance data are presented for Magnesium Battery BA-4840/U, with and without insulation, and with and without a nickel- cadmium (NiCd) battery in a hybrid configuration.

Dimethyl sulfoxide ((CH3)2SO, DMSO) complexes of Cr(NO3)3, Mn(NO3)2, Fe(NO3)3, Co(NO3)2, Ni(NO3)2, Cu(NO3)2, Ni(ClO4)2, and Mg(ClO4)2 were prepared and investigated using infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (nmr) spectroscopy. The infrared data indicate that the ligand forms a coordinate bond to the metal through the oxygen atom in all of the complexes, and that the tetranitrato-metal anion is present in Mn(NO3)2.3DMSO, Co(NO3)2.3DMSO, and Cu(NO3)2.3DMSO. The nmr spectra of Mn(NO3)2.3DMSO, Co(NO3)2.3DMSO, Ni(NO3)2. 4DMSO, and Cu(NO3)2.3DMSO in DMSO solutions were analyzed in terms of contact shifts, and electron-nuclear hyperfine coupling constants. The results correlate with the covalent-bond strengths of the metal atoms and fit a model for electron-spin delocalization via the sigma-bond system of the complexes. Attempts to utilize liquid SO2 as a solvent for the nmr studies were hampered by a reaction between SO2 and the nitrate ion. Literature references to DMSO complexes and to techniques used in their study are presented in two appendixes.

This article is from Journal of Breast Cancer , volume 15 . Abstract Purpose: Although the etiology of breast cancer is multifactorial, oxidative stress plays an important role in carcinogenesis. In this study, manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) gene polymorphism and activity were evaluated in benign and breast cancer tissue. Methods: One hundred and one females were enrolled in this study, 65 who were histopathologically diagnosed with breast cancer and 46 who were benign patients. MnSOD enzyme activity was determined using an indirect competitive inhibition assay and MnSOD gene polymorphism using poly merase chain reaction and agarose gel electrophoresis. Results: MnSOD enzymatic activity (79.83±42.14) was lower in breast cancer tissue compared to benign tumors (236.18±46.37). At the same time, MnSOD enzymatic activity among Ala/Val patients was significantly lower in breast cancer tissue (39.19±7.33) than in Val/Val malignant breast tumors tissue (96.9±22.9). MnSOD enzymatic activity was significantly lower in Val/Val cancer tissue (96.9±22.9) than in benign tissue (255.44±42.7). Conclusion: Breast cancer tumors contain less MnSOD than benign breast samples. Patients with Ala/Val polymorphism had reduced MnSOD activity compared to patients with Val/Val breast cancer. Ala/Val gene polymorphism may be a risk factor associated with more advanced breast cancer stage. MnSOD gene polymorphism Ala/Val may be a risk factor associated with more advanced breast cancer stage, and reduction of MnSOD activity may be a mechanism of the progression of benign to malignant tumors. Further investigations are needed to evaluate the role of MnSOD in breast cancer progression.

Abstract Arsenic contamination of water has been recognized as a serious environmental issue and there are reports on its epidemiological problems to human health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performances of iron-coated pumice and manganese-coated pumice as the adsorbents for removing arsenate from aqueous solutions. The effect of various parameters such as adsorbent dose, contact time, pH and initial concentration on removal efficiency of arsenate were evaluated in batch mode. The data obtained from the kinetic studies were analyzed using kinetic models of pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order. In addition, two isotherm models of Freundlich and Langmuir were used to fit the experimental data. The results showed that the optimum dosage of iron-coated pumice and manganese-coated pumice for arsenate removal were 40 and 80 g/L whereas the adsorption process reached equilibrium after 80 and 100 min, respectively. The maximum removal efficiency of arsenate using the two adsorbents were both recorded in pH=3 as the removal efficiency gradually declined following every increase in pH values of the solution. Iron-coated pumice also showed to have high removal efficiency when the initial concentration of arsenate was high while the low concentration of arsenate was efficiently removed by manganese-coated pumice. Moreover, it was depicted that the adsorption kinetics by both adsorbents followed pseudo-second order equation and the uptake data of arsenate were well fitted with Langmuir isotherm model. Therefore, it could be concluded that iron and manganese-coated pumice could be considered as suitable adsorbents for arsenate removal from aqueous solutions.

Abstract The MnII ion in the title complex, [MnI2(C10H8N2)2], is six-coordinated in a distorted cis-N4I2Mn octa­hedral environment by four N atoms of the two chelating 2,2′-bipyridine ligands and two iodide anions. As a result of the different trans effects of the N and I atoms, the Mn—N bonds trans to the I atom are slightly longer than the Mn—N bonds trans to the N atom. The dihedral angle between the approximately planar ligands [maximum deviation = 0.064 (7) Å] is 75.0 (1)°. Numerous inter- and intra­molecular π–π inter­actions between the pyridyl rings are present, the shortest centroid–centroid distance being 3.905 (5) Å. Abstract In the crystal structure of the title compound, [Mn(C5H7O2)2(NCS)(C5H5N)], the Mn3+ cation is coordin­ated by two acetyl­acetonate anions, one terminal thio­cyanate anion and one pyridine ligand within a slightly distorted octa­hedron. The asymmetric unit consists of half a complex mol­ecule with the Mn3+ cation, the thio­cyanate anion and the pyridine ligand located on a mirror plane. The acetyl­acetonate anion is in a general position. The title compound was previously described [Stults et al. (1975 ▶). Inorg. Chem.14, 722–730] but could only be obtained as a powder. Suitable crystals have now been obtained for a high-precision single-crystal structure determination.

From 1942 to 19451 US imports from India averaged 334,000 long tons per yearo larger than those from any othor country. India continued to rank first during the next two years, but in 1948 US imports from the USSR and from the Union of South Africa were larger than thoso from India ? During the first 11 months of 1950, however, 583,000 long tons had been shipped from India to the US t the total for 1950 being estimated at over 600,000 tons. This sunt represents a large in-crease over India's /940 exports to the US of 383,000 long tons. Location. Tho principal nmmganoso oro-produoing areas of India are in Dadhya Pradesh (formerly central Provinces), Bombay, Bihao, Oolosa, Sandur, Ladras, and ilysoro. Madhya Pradesh is the most important of the producing areas, currently supply-ing 80 percent of the Indiah output. Twenty-seven chromium, twenty-five manganese, thirty-one nickel and twenty-six copper isotopes have so far been observed and the discovery of these isotopes is discussed. For each isotope a brief synopsis of the first refereed publication, including the production and identification method, is presented.

We report the fabrication of Ge:Mn ferromagnetic semiconductors by Mn-ion implantation into Ge followed by pulsed laser annealing. Benefiting from the short time annealing, the hole concentration in Mn-implanted Ge has been increased by two orders of magnitude from 10$^{18}$ to over 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. Likely due to the high hole concentration, we observe that the longitudinal and Hall resistances exhibit the same hysteresis as the magnetization, which is usually considered as a sign of carrier-mediated ferromagnetism.

Abstract Excess fat storage in adipocytes is associated with increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and impaired activity of antioxidant mechanisms. Manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) is a mitochondrial enzyme involved in detoxification of ROS, and objective of the current study is to analyze expression and regulation of MnSOD in obesity. MnSOD is increased in visceral but not subcutaneous fat depots of rodents kept on high fat diets (HFD) and ob/ob mice. MnSOD is elevated in visceral adipocytes of fat fed mice and exposure of differentiating 3T3-L1 cells to lipopolysaccharide, IL-1α, saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated free fatty acids (FFA) upregulates its level. FFA do not alter cytochrome oxidase 4 arguing against overall induction of mitochondrial enzymes. Upregulation of MnSOD in fat loaded cells is not mediated by IL-6, TNF or sterol regulatory element binding protein 2 which are induced in these cells. MnSOD is similarly abundant in perirenal fat of Zucker diabetic rats and non-diabetic animals with similar body weight and glucose has no effect on MnSOD in 3T3-L1 cells. To evaluate whether MnSOD affects adipocyte fat storage, MnSOD was knocked-down in adipocytes for the last three days of differentiation and in mature adipocytes. Knock-down of MnSOD does neither alter lipid storage nor viability of these cells. Heme oxygenase-1 which is induced upon oxidative stress is not altered while antioxidative capacity of the cells is modestly reduced. Current data show that inflammation and excess triglyceride storage raise adipocyte MnSOD which is induced in epididymal adipocytes in obesity.

This article is from Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry , volume 7 . Abstract The carboline ring system is an important pharmacophore found in a number of biologically important targets. Development of synthetic routes for the preparation of these compounds is important in order to prepare a range of analogues containing the carboline heterocyclic moiety. A manganese dioxide mediated one-pot method starting with an activated alcohol and consisting of alcohol oxidation, Pictet–Spengler cyclisation, and oxidative aromatisation, offers a convenient process that allows access to β-carbolines. This one-pot process for the preparation of methyl 9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole-1-carboxylate has subsequently been used as the key step in the synthesis of alangiobussinine and a closely related analogue.
