1NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20150018617: Project Mercury: Man-In-Space Program Of The National Aeronautics And Space Administration. [Report Of The Committee On Aeronautical And Space Sciences United States Senate

By

The purpose of this staff study, made at the request of the chairman, is to serve members of the Committee on Aeronautical and Space Sciences as a source of basic information on Project Mercury, the man-in-space program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The study is largely derived from unclassified information released by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and testimony concerning Project Mercury given during hearings before this committee. The program descriptions are based upon current program planning. Since this is a highly advanced research and development program, the project is obviously subject to changes that may result from future developments and accomplishments characteristic of such research activities. Certain information with respect to revised schedules, obtained on a classified basis by the committee during inspection trips, is necessarily omitted. The appendixes to the study include information that may prove helpful on various aspects of space flight and exploration. Included are unofficial comments and observations relating to Russia's manned space flight activities and also a complete chronology of all satellites, lunar probes, and space probes up to the present.

7Spine 365: Monsters And Madmen: First Man In Space

By

We kick off a boxset of late 50's scifi/horror this week with The First Man into Space. Monsters and Madmen is dedicated to films produced by Richard and Alex Gordon, who also produced Fiend Without a Face which we watched five years ago. Things kick off here with Robert Day's First Man into Space, the tale of an American test pilot who decides to jet into outer space and things do not go well on his return. Very spoopy!

8DTIC ADA623702: A Space Dust Experiment (SPADUS) For Measurement Of The Distribution Of Man-made And Natural Dust In Near-Earth Space For Flight On The P91-1 Advanced Research And Global Observation Satellite (ARGOS)

By

The primary goal of SPADUS is to develop instrumentation for the first-ever measurement of individual dust particle velocities, trajectories, and spatial distributions with sufficient accuracy to identify \201by the orbital characteristics of the dust in near-Earth space\202 their parent bodies. Another goal includes the accurate measurement of particle mass distributions and dust fluxes, with immunity to possible intense backgrounds from radiation belts and/or intense magnetic fields. Finally, it is the goal of SPADUS to develop, design, and implement strategies for large-area sensors and sensor arrays to maximize data collection under conditions of low particle flux for future investigations of debris dust, interplanetary dust, and natural debris streams.

9NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19860021117: The Use Of Tethered Satellites For The Collection Of Cosmic Dust And The Sampling Of Man Made Orbital Debris Far From The Space Station

By

The use of a tethered subsatellite employed downward into the earth's upper atmosphere to an altitude of about 110 km above the earth would eliminate the orbital contamination problem while at the same time affording a measure of atmospheric braking to reduce the velocities of many particles to where they may be captured intact or nearly so with properly designed collectors. The same technique could also be used to monitor the flux of all types of man-made orbital debris out to a distance of more than a hundred kilometers in any direction from the space station. In this way the build up of any debris belt orbiting earth could be determined. The actual collecting elements used for both purposes could be of several different materials and designs so as to optimize the collection of different types of particles with different densities. Stacks of foils, films, plastics, and foams, as well as simple capture cells would be mounted in clusters around the outside of a tethered satellite and protected by iris covers until the tethered had been fully deployed. If the orientation history of the satellite were known the direction of the incoming material could be infered. A chief advantage in deploying such tethered collectors from the Space Station instead of from the shuttle is the ability to maintain deployment of the tether for days instead of hours resulting in much greater yields of intact particles and impact debris.

13The Influence Of Space Flight On Erythrokinetics In Man. Space Life Sciences Missions 1 And 2. Experiment E261

By

The purpose of this contract was to design and conduct experiments that would increase our understanding of the influence of space flight on erythrokinetics and the rapid change that occurs in the red blood cell mass during spaceflight. The experiment designated E261, was flown on Space Life Science missions SLS-1 and SLS-2 (STS 40 and STS 58). Unique features of this experiment included radionuclide tracer studies during flight and frequent in-flight blood samples specifically for the first three or four days of the mission. Plasma volume measurements were made early and late in the missions. Radioactive iron kinetics studies were initiated after one or three days in microgravity since the magnitude of the red blood cell mass decrease dictated that bone marrow production must be decreased very early in the flight. The schedule was designed to study the time course of the changes that occur during spaceflight and to possibly define a mechanism for the rapid reduction in red blood cell mass.

16Conquest Of Space And Stature Of Man

By

Snail Mail and Slow Coach – an interim question In the history of the conquest of space (Eroberung des Raumes) the Holy Roman Empire (Deutscher Nation) situated in central Europe surrounded by neighbours had to overcome a considerable amount of obstacles not the least of which was the fundamental hence structural problem of a vast number of territorial feudal intermediate powers that were united in nothing but a relatively loosely knitted network of rather informal integration we might well call Staatenbund with centralized (nowadays unfamiliar to be sure) hotspots such as Frankfurt (am Main), Vienna (an der blauen Donau), or even Augsburg (am Lech). Territorial integration was a matter of bureaucratic and military arrangements and not yet of trade and change (Handel und Wandel). Organisation was based on law and order rather than communication by writing letters, travelling to and from or selling goods to all and sundry. Long before the advent of apodemic (the art of travelling) there was a stark contrast between the way of aristocratic going places and the mere functionality of business trips (Geschäftsreisen). The latter was being portrayed f.i. by Kleist in his Michael Kohlhaas novella: “The merchant (and horse dealer, MK) Hans Kohlhase lived in Cölln on the Spree (now incorporated into Berlin) in the Margraviate of Brandenburg in the 16th century. In October 1532 he set out on a trip to the Leipzig Trade Fair in the neighbouring Electorate of Saxony. On the way two of his horses were seized, at the command of the Junker von Zaschwitz, as a supposed fee for passage through Saxony. Kohlhase sought redress in the Saxon courts but failed to obtain it. Outraged, he issued a public challenge in 1534 and burned down houses in Wittenberg. Even a letter of admonition from Martin Luther could not dissuade him, and Kohlhase and the band he collected committed further acts of terror. In 1540 he was finally captured and tried, and was publicly broken on the wheel in Berlin on 22 March 1540. From this history Kleist fashionned a novella that dramatized a personal quest for justice in defiance of the claims of the general law and the community.” (Wikipedia) The former can be grasped easiest by looking into Boswell´s Grand Tour and the way he would avoid disgrace being short of funds by covering up his identity in 1764 en route from Potsdam to the court at Braunschweig using “den ordinären Postwagen” and changing at Königslutter to the more prestigious “Extrapost” – “Ich fühlte mich als Majoratsherr von Auchinleck, ruhig und gelassen.” (Klaus Beyrer, 1985, p190). Huxley´s contribution does lie on a more abstract level hinting at the “enormous resources of a modern urban-industrial society” (2/11) whereas Hannah Arendt could obviously see what lay ahead of us: “Electronic brains share with all other machines the capacity to do man´s work better and faster than man.” (46) Relevant literature: Hannah Arendt , The Conquest of Space and the Stature of Man; Wolfgang Behringer , Thurn und Taxis. 17Man And Space Soviet Perspective

By

In this booklet we shall examine the Soviet space programme. Is space research motivated by a desire to win national prestige, or is the rapid advance of the present-day scientific and technological revo lution inescapably drawing mankind to look beyond the earth's confining atmosphere? What tangible benefits do we, people living today, receive from space flights? Have the discoveries made in space changed our views, our feelings, our thinking? Let us ponder these questions dispassionately for the reader to draw his own conclusions . . . Book design and illustration by Yuri Maximov

18Man On Earth : How Civilization And Technology Changed The Face Of The World--a Survey From Space

40NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19960017277: Investigation Of Natural And Man-Made Radiation Effects On Crews On Long Duration Space Missions

By

Over the past several years, NASA has studied a variety of mission scenarios designed to establish a permanent human presence on the surface of Mars. Nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) is one of the possible elements in this program. During the initial stages of vehicle design work, careful consideration must be given to not only the shielding requirements of natural space radiation, but to the shielding and configuration requirements of the on-board reactors. In this work, the radiation transport code MCNP has been used to make initial estimates of crew exposures to reactor radiation fields for a specific manned NEP vehicle design. In this design, three 25 MW(sub th), scaled SP-100-class reactors are shielded by three identical shields. Each shield has layers of beryllium, tungsten, and lithium hydride between the reactor and the crew compartment. Separate calculations are made of both the exiting neutron and gamma fluxes from the reactors during beginning-of-life, full-power operation. This data is then used as the source terms for particle transport in MCNP. The total gamma and neutron fluxes exiting the reactor shields are recorded and separate transport calculations are then performed for a 10 g/sq cm crew compartment aluminum thickness. Estimates of crew exposures have been assessed for various thicknesses of the shield tungsten and lithium hydride layers. A minimal tungsten thickness of 20 cm is required to shield the reactor photons below the 0.05 Sv/y man-made radiation limit. In addition to a 20-cm thick tungsten layer, a 40-cm thick lithium hydride layer is required to shield the reactor neutrons below the annual limit. If the tungsten layer is 30-cm thick, the lithium hydride layer should be at least 30-cm thick. These estimates do not take into account the photons generated by neutron interactions inside the shield because the MCNP neutron cross sections did not allow reliable estimates of photon production in these materials. These results, along with natural space radiation shielding estimates calculated by NASA Langley Research Center, have been used to provide preliminary input data into a new Macintosh-based software tool. A skeletal version of this tool being developed will allow rapid radiation exposure and risk analyses to be performed on a variety of Lunar and Mars missions utilizing nuclear-powered vehicles.

42" MAN IN SPACE TODAY TOMORROW AND TITAN III " NASA LIFTING BODY DOCUMENTARY Part 1 Of 2 30482

This rare and informative NASA documentary "Today, Tomorrow and Titan III" shows the Titan III program as well as manned space flight and aeronautic advances in NASA in the mid 1960's. The film details research efforts put forth to manufacture lifting bodies to be used for the Manned Orbiting Lab program including the M2-F1. High speed aircraft are also shown including the X-15. Tests are conducted at the Edwards AFB and NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. It touches upon the Manned Orbiting Laboratory space station concept which was a platform to put people into space for military missions. It was announced to the public in 1963. The main contractor for the project would be Douglas Aircraft Company. The Titan III represented a family of launch vehicles derived from the Titan II launched in 1974 and '77. The film opens with images from Cape Kennedy in Florida and the Apollo launch (:09). Large crawler transporters cart the shuttle to the launch pad (:14). The primary object was to ship men and equipment to space and return the three participating astronauts to earth. It was a 20 billion dollar dress rehearsal for a round trip mission to the moon. The objective was to be reached by 1970. An animation follows detailing the launching (1:57) through to the anticipated landing (2:43). A series of scientific journals on space flick by (3:16). This film was presented by 7 Arts Television (3:35). The USAF Titan III complex (4:12) appears in Cape Kennedy Florida. The launch system is discussed (4:23). It was to provide launch capabilities to support future programs. The narrator notes launch vehicles are no longer assembled on the launch pad (4:49) and explains integrate transfer launch procedure (4:52). The division chief of Titan III (5:03) launch operations introduces the Titan 3c space launch vehicle (5:31). A third stage (5:43) and solid rocket motors were added. Scenes are captured from the vertical integration building (6:02). Stages are drawn from the building on a large rail transporter (6:14) for the solid motor assembly building (6:22). Sold rocket motors are pictured under construction (6:29). Stages are mechanically and electrically mated (6:54). Stages are transported to the launching area (7:03). Integrated check outs (7:26) lead to the launch initiation. This is the first manned mission to utilize Titan III; the USAF Manned Orbiting Laboratory (7:46). The shuttle is launched (7:59). The Gemini program displayed astronauts capabilities of maneuvering space capsules (8:35). They performed rendezvous and docking maneuvers (8:44). An astronaut drops down to Earth at the splash down point (9:04). Navy choppers swing out to recover the returned astronaut (9:13). A desert near LA is used as NASA sought to find a way to conduct landings on earth (10:07). Rogers Dry Lake; home of Edwards AFB, is chosen as the sight (10:21). Milt Thompson (10:48) headed the program. A paraglider is pictured as the replacement for the parachute (10:55). One touches down here (11:14). Engineers chose a shape; the M2 shape and contracted a sail plane company (13:25). The vehicle is tested on the runway (14:10). An air tow is demonstrated (14:17). A view follows from within the cockpit (15:03) over the pilot’s shoulder. NASA research pilot, Bruce Peterson (16:19) discusses a test flight. The film begins to conclude as it looks towards the summer of 1966 (21:04). The heavy weight vehicle was delivered and final preparations were conducted for the acid test (21:09). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. 46NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19950012080: Design Considerations For A Space Station Radiation Shield For Protection From Both Man-made And Natural Sources

By

This study was conducted to analyze scenarios involving the use of nuclear-power vehicles in the vicinity of a manned Space Station (SS) in low-earth-orbit (LEO) to quantify their radiological impact to the station crew. In limiting the radiant dose to crew members, mission planners may (1) shut the reactor down prior to reentry, (2) position the vehicle at a prescribed parking distance, and (3) deploy radiation shield about the shutdown reactor. The current report focuses on the third option in which point-kernel gamma-ray shielding calculations were performed for a variety of shield configurations for both nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) and nuclear thermal rocket (NTR) vehicles. For a returning NTR vehicle, calculations indicate that a 14.9 MT shield would be needed to limit the integrated crew exposure to no more than 0.05 Sv over a period of six months (25 percent of the allowable exposure to man-made radiation sources). During periods of low vehicular activity in LEO, the shield may be redeployed about the SS habitation module in order to decrease crew exposures to trapped proton radiations by approximately a factor of 10. The corresponding shield mass required for deployment at a returning NEP vehicle is 2.21 MT. Additional scenarios examined include the radioactivation of various metals as might be found in tools used in EVA activities.

Additional scenarios examined include the radioactivation of various metals as might be found in tools used in EVA activities.

48Rocket Man : Robert H. Goddard And The Birth Of The Space Age
