Snail Mail and Slow Coach – an interim question In the history of the conquest of space (Eroberung des Raumes) the Holy Roman Empire (Deutscher Nation) situated in central Europe surrounded by neighbours had to overcome a considerable amount of obstacles not the least of which was the fundamental hence structural problem of a vast number of territorial feudal intermediate powers that were united in nothing but a relatively loosely knitted network of rather informal integration we might well call Staatenbund with centralized (nowadays unfamiliar to be sure) hotspots such as Frankfurt (am Main), Vienna (an der blauen Donau), or even Augsburg (am Lech). Territorial integration was a matter of bureaucratic and military arrangements and not yet of trade and change (Handel und Wandel). Organisation was based on law and order rather than communication by writing letters, travelling to and from or selling goods to all and sundry. Long before the advent of apodemic (the art of travelling) there was a stark contrast between the way of aristocratic going places and the mere functionality of business trips (Geschäftsreisen). The latter was being portrayed f.i. by Kleist in his Michael Kohlhaas novella: “The merchant (and horse dealer, MK) Hans Kohlhase lived in Cölln on the Spree (now incorporated into Berlin) in the Margraviate of Brandenburg in the 16th century. In October 1532 he set out on a trip to the Leipzig Trade Fair in the neighbouring Electorate of Saxony. On the way two of his horses were seized, at the command of the Junker von Zaschwitz, as a supposed fee for passage through Saxony. Kohlhase sought redress in the Saxon courts but failed to obtain it. Outraged, he issued a public challenge in 1534 and burned down houses in Wittenberg. Even a letter of admonition from Martin Luther could not dissuade him, and Kohlhase and the band he collected committed further acts of terror. In 1540 he was finally captured and tried, and was publicly broken on the wheel in Berlin on 22 March 1540. From this history Kleist fashionned a novella that dramatized a personal quest for justice in defiance of the claims of the general law and the community.” (Wikipedia) The former can be grasped easiest by looking into Boswell´s Grand Tour and the way he would avoid disgrace being short of funds by covering up his identity in 1764 en route from Potsdam to the court at Braunschweig using “den ordinären Postwagen” and changing at Königslutter to the more prestigious “Extrapost” – “Ich fühlte mich als Majoratsherr von Auchinleck, ruhig und gelassen.” (Klaus Beyrer, 1985, p190). We kick off a boxset of late 50's scifi/horror this week with The First Man into Space. Monsters and Madmen is dedicated to films produced by Richard and Alex Gordon, who also produced Fiend Without a Face which we watched five years ago. Things kick off here with Robert Day's First Man into Space, the tale of an American test pilot who decides to jet into outer space and things do not go well on his return. Very spoopy!

The purpose of this contract was to design and conduct experiments that would increase our understanding of the influence of space flight on erythrokinetics and the rapid change that occurs in the red blood cell mass during spaceflight. The experiment designated E261, was flown on Space Life Science missions SLS-1 and SLS-2 (STS 40 and STS 58). Unique features of this experiment included radionuclide tracer studies during flight and frequent in-flight blood samples specifically for the first three or four days of the mission. Plasma volume measurements were made early and late in the missions. Radioactive iron kinetics studies were initiated after one or three days in microgravity since the magnitude of the red blood cell mass decrease dictated that bone marrow production must be decreased very early in the flight. The schedule was designed to study the time course of the changes that occur during spaceflight and to possibly define a mechanism for the rapid reduction in red blood cell mass.

This rare and informative NASA documentary "Today, Tomorrow and Titan III" shows the Titan III program as well as manned space flight and aeronautic advances in NASA in the mid 1960's. The film details research efforts put forth to manufacture lifting bodies to be used for the Manned Orbiting Lab program including the M2-F1. High speed aircraft are also shown including the X-15. Tests are conducted at the Edwards AFB and NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. It touches upon the Manned Orbiting Laboratory space station concept which was a platform to put people into space for military missions. It was announced to the public in 1963. The main contractor for the project would be Douglas Aircraft Company. The Titan III represented a family of launch vehicles derived from the Titan II launched in 1974 and '77. The film opens with images from Cape Kennedy in Florida and the Apollo launch (:09). Large crawler transporters cart the shuttle to the launch pad (:14). The primary object was to ship men and equipment to space and return the three participating astronauts to earth. It was a 20 billion dollar dress rehearsal for a round trip mission to the moon. The objective was to be reached by 1970. An animation follows detailing the launching (1:57) through to the anticipated landing (2:43). A series of scientific journals on space flick by (3:16). This film was presented by 7 Arts Television (3:35). The USAF Titan III complex (4:12) appears in Cape Kennedy Florida. The launch system is discussed (4:23). It was to provide launch capabilities to support future programs. The narrator notes launch vehicles are no longer assembled on the launch pad (4:49) and explains integrate transfer launch procedure (4:52). The division chief of Titan III (5:03) launch operations introduces the Titan 3c space launch vehicle (5:31). A third stage (5:43) and solid rocket motors were added. A desert near LA is used as NASA sought to find a way to conduct landings on earth (10:07). Rogers Dry Lake; home of Edwards AFB, is chosen as the sight (10:21). Milt Thompson (10:48) headed the program. A paraglider is pictured as the replacement for the parachute (10:55). One touches down here (11:14). Engineers chose a shape; the M2 shape and contracted a sail plane company (13:25). The vehicle is tested on the runway (14:10). An air tow is demonstrated (14:17). A view follows from within the cockpit (15:03) over the pilot’s shoulder. NASA research pilot, Bruce Peterson (16:19) discusses a test flight. The film begins to conclude as it looks towards the summer of 1966 (21:04). The heavy weight vehicle was delivered and final preparations were conducted for the acid test (21:09). This book has appeared now for the very reason that it didn’t appear 20 centuries or half a century ago—because of speed. Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days required a speed of 500 kilometres a day. Outer Space and Man requires escape velocity at least. Before the reader embarks on this book we should like to give him a warning. It has several qualities which, if not mentioned in advance, may escape his attention, and he may not like the book so much—which would be a pity. We hope that this book will be easy to read. We should like the reader to smile occasionally and to stop and think occasionally, but never to wrinkle his brow trying to recall some for­ gotten textbook formula. We know that no one has tried to define cosmic humour, but we have  seen Gagarin’s smile and we make so bold as lo claim that if people didn’t know how to laugh they would never have entered outer space. But this is not a funny' book. It has no formulas, but it does have numbers. It has words like “orbit”, “parsec”, and even “explo­ sive decompression”. When it was finished all the authors and editors reread it, and each one understood many things, and all together they understood everything. In any case, the reader will probably realize that outer space is not to be trilled with. The book is far from comprehensive. Many things have not been reflected, described or even mentioned. But why speak of omissions? If it contained everything about outer space it would be another kind of book which we should be unable to judge. When the authors got down to work they knew of only two Soviet cosmonauts. By the time they had finished there were eleven. The ink will dry on the printed pages, the reader will get to the last part and then how many will there be? We can only guess how many new cos­ monauts there will be and what new exploits they will have performed. Per aspera ad astra—through difficulties to the stars—the ancients used to say. Technology issues related to the use of robots as man-extension or telerobot systems in space are discussed and exemplified. General considerations are presentd on control and information problems in space teleoperation and on the characteristics of Earth orbital teleoperation. The JPL R and D work in the area of man-machine interface devices and techniques for sensing and computer-based control is briefly summarized. The thrust of this R and D effort is to render space teleoperation efficient and safe through the use of devices and techniques which will permit integrated and task-level (intelligent) two-way control communication between human operator and telerobot machine in Earth orbit. Specific control and information display devices and techniques are discussed and exemplified with development results obtained at JPL in recent years.

This study was conducted to analyze scenarios involving the use of nuclear-power vehicles in the vicinity of a manned Space Station (SS) in low-earth-orbit (LEO) to quantify their radiological impact to the station crew. In limiting the radiant dose to crew members, mission planners may (1) shut the reactor down prior to reentry, (2) position the vehicle at a prescribed parking distance, and (3) deploy radiation shield about the shutdown reactor. The current report focuses on the third option in which point-kernel gamma-ray shielding calculations were performed for a variety of shield configurations for both nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) and nuclear thermal rocket (NTR) vehicles. For a returning NTR vehicle, calculations indicate that a 14.9 MT shield would be needed to limit the integrated crew exposure to no more than 0.05 Sv over a period of six months (25 percent of the allowable exposure to man-made radiation sources). During periods of low vehicular activity in LEO, the shield may be redeployed about the SS habitation module in order to decrease crew exposures to trapped proton radiations by approximately a factor of 10. The corresponding shield mass required for deployment at a returning NEP vehicle is 2.21 MT. Additional scenarios examined include the radioactivation of various metals as might be found in tools used in EVA activities.

 1966, this rarely seen documentary "Today, Tomorrow and Titan III" shows the U.S. Air Force and NASA's activities and research. The Manned Orbiting Laboratory space station concept, put forward as part of an initiative to militarize space under the auspices of the USAF, is touched upon. Research efforts with lifting bodies (which might be used to resupply the MOL) including the M2-F1 and high speed aircraft including the X-15 rocket plane are shown at Edwards Air Force Base and the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center.  The Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL), originally referred to as the Manned Orbital Laboratory, was part of the United States Air Force's manned spaceflight program, a successor to the cancelled Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar military reconnaissance space plane project. The project was developed from several early Air Force and NASA concepts of manned space stations to be used for reconnaissance purposes. MOL evolved into a single-use laboratory, with which crews would be launched on 40-day missions and return to Earth using a Gemini B spacecraft, derived from NASA's Project Gemini. The MOL program was announced to the public on 10 December 1963 as a manned platform to prove the utility of man in space for military missions. Astronauts selected for the program were later told of the reconnaissance mission for the program.[1] The contractor for the MOL was the Douglas Aircraft Company. The Gemini B was externally similar to NASA's Gemini spacecraft, although it underwent several modifications, including the addition of a circular hatch through the heat shield, which allowed passage between the spacecraft and the laboratory. MOL was cancelled in 1969, during the height of the Apollo program, when it was shown that unmanned reconnaissance satellites could achieve the same objectives much more cost-effectively. U.S. space station development was instead pursued with the civilian NASA Skylab (Apollo Applications Program) which flew in the mid-1970s. The NASA M2-F1 was a lightweight, unpowered prototype aircraft, developed to flight test the wingless lifting body concept. It looked like a "flying bathtub," and was designated the M2-F1, the "M" referring to "manned" and "F" referring to "flight" version. In 1962, NASA Dryden management approved a program to build a lightweight, unpowered lifting body prototype. It featured a plywood shell placed over a tubular steel frame crafted at Dryden. Construction was completed in 1963. The Titan IIIA was a prototype rocket booster, which consisted of a standard Titan II rocket with a Transtage upper stage. The Titan IIIB with its different versions (23B, 24B, 33B, and 34B) had the Titan III core booster with an Agena D upper stage. This combination was used to launch the KH-8 GAMBIT series of intelligence-gathering satellites. They were all launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, due south over the Pacific into polar orbits. Their maximum payload mass was about 7,500 lb (3,000 kg). For the Term of his Natural Life, written by Marcus Clarke, was published in the Australian Journal between 1870 and 1872 (as His Natural Life), appearing as a novel in 1874. It is the best known novelisation of life as a convict in early Australian history. Described as a "ripping yarn", and at times relying on seemingly implausible coincidences, the story follows the fortunes of Rufus Dawes, a young man transported for a murder which he did not commit. The harsh and inhumane treatment meted out to the convicts, some of whom were transported for relatively minor crimes, is clearly conveyed. The conditions experienced by the convicts are graphically described. The novel was based on research by the author as well as a visit to the penal settlement of Port Arthur, Tasmania. A crack American flying troop has been sent to France, where they await further instructions. They are concerned that their extensive talents will not be put to good use in the war. Major Cowan introduces Lt. McGee as the British instructor for the crew. It turns out the Brit is actually an American, born in the U.S., even though his parents were British. McGee and Larkin are flying partners. Out on a mission, McGee spots a small enemy plane in a searchlight, probably intent on dropping flares to mark targets for bombers. He drives in for the attack successfully, as the enemy plane zooms earthward in flames. During another flight to Epernay, a fellow pilot, Siddons, fades back to a previous stop. McGee and Larkin suspect Siddons of aiding the enemy. Von Herzmann is preparing German pilots to fight Americans. Larkin and McGee defeat the enemy and force a retreat. In another battle, McGee must crash-land, where he passes out due to injuries. He spends weeks recovering in a hospital. When he is discharged, he cannot find his squadron. After diligent searching, he shows up at his old base. At the end, it is revealed that Siddons is not at all what he was suspected of being--in fact, the opposite. (Bill Boerst)

My aim in this book on Mythology for young readers has been to give them solid knowledge on the subject, as far as it is advisable to go with immature minds, based upon the most recent investigations of scholars, and to select the myths used in illustration of the plan, with a view to giving them interesting stories to read, which will, almost unconsciously to themselves, lay a firm foundation for the fascinating study of Comparative Mythology, should they wish to go more deeply into it in the future. <br><br> There is much talk nowadays as to the authenticity of the records of savage myths. Much of this talk seems to me futile, for a myth is not a fixed entity. Each successive narrator is almost sure to vary and embellish somewhat the material that comes to him, according to his own inventive fancy. If, therefore, a savage myth recorded by a white man retains the chief characteristics of the savage myth, in spite of some fanciful turns given it by him, to the degree, say, that a story of Ovid’s retains those of a Greek myth, it is to all intents and purposes a savage myth, and the embellishments may be disregarded, as Ovid’s are when we are considering Greek Mythology. I have, therefore, included in this volume those versions of the myths that seemed most readable and attractive, provided the primitive attitude of mind and customs were fully emphasized. - Summary by the author from the book

This 18th-century Latin textbook presents 202 Aesop's fables in Latin, "with an English translation more literal than any yet extant, designed for the readier instruction of beginners in the Latin tongue." There are fables here from the classical tradition, along with fables from the Renaissance author Abstemius and other neo-Latin sources. The book has the Latin and English texts in facing columns, with italic font being used to help students connect the Latin words in the left column with the English words in the right column.
