The overall objective of this research was to explore several possible training methods to produce efficient compensatory tracking in the rhesus monkey. Various approaches were used. Several animals were successfully trained and a five-parameter model was developed to describe this behavior mathematically. A major finding was that no detrimental effects were evidenced following a shift from pursuit to compensatory tracking. This finding agrees with the findings of others in human tracking situations and illustrates another similarity between human and subhuman response to discrete tracking tasks. The study showed that no special retraining procedures are required to train subhuman primates on either pursuit or compensatory tracking and this feature, that of a universal training methods, was a primary goal of this research. Another major finding was that, based on the assumption that low doses of tranquilizing drugs may improve tracking efficiency of shock conditioned animals, it appears that the effect of tranquilizers was dependent as much on the individual animal as it was on dose level.

Sera from residents of the United States and Southeast Asia were surveyed for the presence of antibody to highly purified staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB). Hemagglutination of ovine erythrocytes coupled to SEB was the method for detecting antibody, and immune-precipitation reaction in agar gel served as an indicator of IgG antibody activity. Approximately 70% of sera from the U.S. had HA antibody and 30% had precipitins, whereas all samples from Southeast Asia had HA activity and 90% had precipitating activity. Seroconversion occurred in individuals who had no known history of exposure to SEB. Experimental intoxication of rhesus monkeys indicated that repeated parenteral exposure to SEB was required to achieve the titers of antibody observed in human sera. Rechallenge by gavage was less effective, in that antibody stimulation occurred only in monkeys that were fed repeatedly with 100 median effective doses (ED50). Resistance to a primary iv challenge with 1-25 ED50 was correlated with titers of naturally acquired HA antibody, but resistance to higher does was related to presence of precipitins. Ten weeks after primary exposure, many monkeys lacking humoral antibody were resistant to a second iv challenge. In contrast, illness following primary challenge with 1- 100 ED50 by gavage was unrelated to values of antibody, and the initial exposure had no affect on the response of seronegative monkeys to a second challenge by gavage.

Maximum suspension time from a parallel rod for infant primates, including humans (155 seconds, two-handed), chimpanzees (5 minutes, one-handed), and rhesus monkeys (33 minutes, one-handed) approximately equals or exceeds that of adults of the same species, remarkably. Interspecific and interage differences are ascribable to geometrical similitude, because, with morphological proportionality and physiological equivalence, larger animals are relatively weaker. Equally perplexing, the legs and feet of gibbons are proportionately less massive and architecturally more poorly constructed for supporting strength than those of great apes, yet gibbons walk erect with great frequency and duration; the same surprising contrastists between immature and adult pongids. In both instances geometrical similitude is operative, with optimum form only partially compensating for the handicap of larger body-size. These analyses also provide the key to the interpretation of many other phenomena of primate form and function.

The spirited memoir of Harvey Teasdale (1817-1904) tells the story of a wilful child who became a stage-struck youth before achieving success with his celebrated acrobatic performances in a monkey costume in the theatres of Yorkshire.  Imprisoned for assaulting his wife, he experienced a religious conversion and travelled around Yorkshire as an itinerant preacher, using his actor’s skills to promote Methodism as vigorously as he once promoted himself.  Teasdale’s highly expressive and dramatic autobiography is a rare example of the voice of a working-class Victorian performer; it also gives fascinating glimpses of life in nineteenth-century Sheffield and its schools, factories, theatres and public houses.

Williams was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, a community near the city of Paterson. His father was an English immigrant, and his mother was born in Puerto Rico. He attended public school in Rutherford until 1897, then was sent to study at Château de Lancy near Geneva, Switzerland, the Lycée Condorcet in Paris, France, for two years and Horace Mann School in New York City. Then, in 1902, he entered the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. During his time at Penn, Williams befriended Ezra Pound, Hilda Doolittle (best known as H.D.) and the painter Charles Demuth. These friendships supported his growing passion for poetry. He received his M.D. in 1906 and spent the next four years in internships in New York City and in travel and postgraduate studies abroad (e.g., at the University of Leipzig where he studied pediatrics). He returned to Rutherford in 1910 and began his medical practice, which lasted until 1951. Ironically, most of his patients knew little if anything of his writings; instead they viewed him as a doctor who helped deliver over 2,000 of their children into the world. <br/>(From Wikipedia)
