The performance of single individuals, two-man teams without intercommunication, and two-man teams with intercommunication was compared in a complex decision-making task. The task was an operational game derived from radar approach control. Forty-eight students participated. The experimental design utilized a subject x conditions balanced Latin square having six independent replications. Two-man team performance was superior to that of single individuals, but not proportionately so. Interpretation of the data in terms of productivity per person showed the person working alone to be significantly superior to the person working in a two-man team. Teams with communication were slightly superior to teams having no communication. The explanation of the results of the individual vs. individuals in a team I comparison is hypothesized to lie in the diversion of time and productive capacity in the team situatlon away from the prime task and into integrative and coordinative behavior.

This report describes the theoretical foundations, methodology, and initial results of an ongoing empirical investigation of team decision making. The theoretical foundations are based on the team process and performance literature, which is discussed in terms of a broad model of team performance. To allow for the measurement of various elements of team performance depicted in the model, a computerized testbed has been developed. This testbed, the Team Performance Assessment Battery (TPAB), includes team and individual tasks arranged according to a synthetic work methodology. Using TPAB, an empirical study has been performed in which team structure and workload were manipulated in a between groups design. The results of this study are interpreted in the context of the team performance model. Implications for future research are also discussed.

The results from application of Stufflebeam's comprehensive decision-making methodology--the context-input-process-product (CIPP) evaluation model--to the evaluation of a dental team training program with expanded functions of auxiliary personnel (paraprofessionals) at a school of dentistry are described. In view of the expectations of health care on the part of the American public, this training program was aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the dental profession to serve a large public at lower cost and with greater efficiency without a reduction of quality in service. Thus for this innovative training program, it appeared essential to delineate, obtain, and provide useful information for: (1) planning decisions regarding appropriate change-oriented objectives based on a rationale of needs (facilitated by context evaluation), (2) structuring decisions concerning a choice of alternative designs, strategies, and procedures for conducting the program (served by input evaluation), (3) implementing decisions pertaining to carrying out and monitoring the program design and strategy (directed by process evaluation), and (4) recycling decisions concerning whether to continue, terminate, modify, or refocus the change activity (aided by product evaluation). The effect of shared knowledge on team decision making in Command and Control tasks was investigated in the present research. In a simulated C2-task 22 teams of 2 subjects each played 16 scenarios. The scenarios varied in the disturbance of communication between team members and in whether these were routine or non-routine, that is whether knowledge acquired during training could be applied or not. In half of the teams both team members possessed knowledge for detecting threat patterns, in the other half of the teams only one team member possessed that knowledge and he or she had to explicitly instruct the other team member to detect threats. The results showed that teams in which knowledge was shared between team members performed better than teams in which knowledge was not shared. This 'shared knowledge effect' was strongest in those situations in which communication was disturbed. The effect was absent in non-routine scenarios. There was, however, a positive effect of shared knowledge on the quick dissemination of threat reports in routine scenarios. We conclude that sharing specialist knowledge, such as required for threat assessment, can have positive effects on team decision making, particularly in situations in which the communication between team members is degraded.

The purpose of this project is to test our theoretical model. Our proposed dual-pathway model states that the consistency of team voice content increases decision-making speed by enhancing processing fluency. However, it may also adversely affect decision quality by constraining cognitive flexibility. In addition, leaders’ critical openness weakens the indirect effects of the consistency of team voice content on both decision speed and quality. This experiment will manipulate the consistency of team voice content through three scenarios to test whether the hypotheses are valid.

The RoboCup Simulator is a popular experimentation platform for research in artificial intelligence, from areas such as computer vision, machine learning and multi-agent systems. The primary purpose of the simulator is to provide a software analogue to the physical robot RoboCup leagues, providing an easy method of entry into RoboCup without the need for expensive hardware. This simulator provides a common framework for researchers to compare their approaches and many graduate students and professors utilize the simulator for their experiments. We wanted a platform that would encourage researchers outside the government to produce the kinds of algorithms and software that would easily transition into solutions for teams of autonomous vehicles for military scenarios. To accomplish this, we began modifying the RoboCup soccer game step-by-step to incorporate rules that simulate these scenarios. These changes affect the field of play, agent-agent communication rules, the number of balls, what constitutes a foul, and the number of teams present in a game. An initial version of the software that incorporates some of these changes is now available with the final version scheduled for completion during the summer of 2010. We anticipate publishing the final version as open source software.

Although Baum was credited as the author, it was written entirely by Thompson. <br /><br />The Scarecrow is upset when Professor Wogglebug tells him that he has no family, so he goes to where Dorothy Gale found him to trace his "roots."
