This is the first episode of our new mini-series exploring the opportunities and challenges that come with businesses supporting LGBTI equality. Over the past few years, more and more companies have been engaging with LGBTI rights and equality, from putting inclusive employment policies in place, to celebrating Pride in their marketing campaigns, to speaking out in favour of laws that would support LGBTI equality. This provides some great opportunities for activist organisations, but it's not all plain sailing. Here we look at the rising opportunities and challenges for LGBTI organisations engaging with the private sector. At ILGA-Europe we've experienced these first-hand, as businesses have reached out to support our work with and on behalf of our member organisations, and with us to discuss these developments from the ILGA-Europe perspective is our Executive Director, Evelyne Paradis.We're also joined by Jens Schadendorf, economist and ch air of busines ethics at TU Munich, and author of the recent book, Gayme Changer: How the LGBT+ Community and their Allies are Changing the Global Economy , which provids and overview of the business arena engaging with LGBTI rights and inclusion,a nd the impact of that, both on communities and countries.

This report provides guidance for those who want to make the business case for building software assurance into software products during each software development life-cycle activity. The business case defends the value of making additional efforts to ensure that software has minimal security risks when it is released and shows that those efforts are most cost-effective when they are made appropriately throughout the development life cycle. Although there is no single model that can be recommended for making the cost-benefit argument, there are promising models and methods that can be used individually and collectively for this purpose, as well as some convincing case study data that supports the value of building software assurance into newly developed software. These are described in this report. The report includes a discussion of the following topics as they relate to the business case for software assurance: cost-benefit models, measurement, risk, prioritization, process improvement, globalization, organizational development, and case studies. These topics were selected based on earlier studies and collaborative efforts, as well as the workshop Making the Business Case for Software Assurance, which was held at Carnegie Mellon University in September 2008.

A unit in college-level business French is designed to call on students' imagination and desire to become entrepreneurs, while providing information on the structure and environment of a company. The core of the unit is the creation of a fictitious company whose operation lends itself to a variety of exercises tailored to the needs of students at various levels of language proficiency and business knowledge. Intense role-playing, class discussions using special terminology, and key concepts of French business are used. The unit requires a minimum of six sessions to complete, and some knowledge of commercial company law is a prerequisite. The class is divided into groups for decision-making as the company is formed, and students discuss ideas for an appropriate business. Then, four aspects of the company's formation are considered: (1) its legal form; (2) the establishment process; (3) a suitable organization for smooth operation; and (4) a marketing strategy. An example of the establishment of a fictitious business by this teaching method is provided, and the four steps are described. It is concluded that the unit generates excitement and a sense of common purpose among the students, and that it reflects a new attitude about entrepreneurship in France. (MSE)

Buildings are one of the largest consumers of natural resources, a major source of ecological pollution, and occasionally toxic to human health. Sustainable design is the common term associated with buildings which, during their construction, use, and eventual disposal, seek to minimize their negative impact on the environment and human health. The U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system helps to assess a building's sustainability level. In the Federal Government's push to set the example for the rest of the nation, nearly every Federal Agency has chosen to adopt the LEED assessment tool. Each of the Armed Services in the Department of Defense (DoD) has set ambitious LEED certification goals. Despite their stated goals and the clear environmental and health benefits of LEED, a common concern is that LEED-designed buildings are simply too costly to construct. However, many proponents profess that LEED-designed buildings shouldn't cost significantly more than conventionally designed and constructed buildings and that the operational life-cycle cost savings rapidly compensate for any additional initial costs. Unfortunately, no comprehensive studies on initial construction costs have been performed in the DoD. Therefore, it continues to be the primary source of unit-level resistance to LEED and sustainable design. This research gathered historical cost data from 22 completed Federal construction projects and used statistical analysis to explore whether a business case could be made to support LEED using initial construction costs in the DoD. Results from the analysis were mixed. Hypothesis testing deemed there was no statistical difference in cost between LEED and conventionally designed facility construction. While on average LEED buildings were only 1.9% more expensive to construct than conventional facilities, the 9.2% standard deviation made it difficult to make a favorable business case. (94 refs.)

For hundreds of years scholars, politicians, and common folk have debated the issue of whether it is more beneficial for a country to rely on its own citizens for the supplies and services necessary for commerce and the defense of the nation, or whether the market should be open to the world for competition. Historically, the popularity of domestic preference for such supplies and services has waxed and waned, depending in large part on economic conditions. History tends to show that when times are prosperous, consumers appreciate the opportunity to take advantage of world market competition. That's when consumers truly get the best bang for their buck. When times are economically trying, however, many people have feared for their own employment and even resented foreign competition. Under such circumstances, protectionist policies tend to surface.
