Tarek Atoui, “DeafSpace and Making Musical Instruments” Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium March 9, 2015, 7:30-9:00pm The David Brower Center, Berkeley CA Co-presented with the MATRIX program at the Berkeley Art Museum. About the talk: Atoui will present several of his ongoing projects each of which propose original methods for making instruments and the possibilities they open in terms of collaboration, performance and composition. In the Dahlem Sessions and the Reverse Sessions, Atoui inverted the order in which instruments are usually created, using the sounds of a collection of ethnic musical instruments located in the Dahlem Museum of Ethnology in Berlin as a starting point for imagining and building new instruments. Thanjavur is the center of Carnatic music and famous for musicians. Bharathanatyam- The classical dance of Tamilnadu is originated in ancient Thanjavur. This form of dance is based on songs in Carnatic music. Hence, producing the musical instruments in Thanjavur became a major craft. Among string instruments, the Thanjavur veena and Tambura arevery famous. Both the instruments are made of wood from the jack fruit tree. The different parts of instruments are carved and joined together with tamarind seed paste. The instrument Tambura have similar features except that they do not have ground shaped fixture at the further end and have only four strings no frets. The ancient Tamil instrument Silappadikaaram , the wooden Yaazh in boat shape and fish shape, which is similar to harp or lute. This is now replaced by the versatile Veena. These instruments are played in various temples, especially those in Thanjavur. Nayaks and Marathas of Thanjavur encouraged the music. The Families in and around the town of Thanjavur are into the manufacturing of Veena and other musical instruments for generations. The unique traditional crafts of Thanjavur can be classified into musical instruments, Paintings, metal ware, textiles, decorative arts, wood and ivory carving, basketry, sculpture in stone and stucco.

Throughout his memoir, he stresses the importance of tangible service and physical production over relative value as judged by profits and money. Mother Elizabeth Sawyer is a poor, lonely, and unfairly ostracized old woman with nothing left to lose. Frank is a poor farmer who intends to marry his beloved Winnifred, who is pregnant with his child, but is pressured to marry Susan, the rich yeoman's daughter. Young Cuddy Banks is a clown who pines after a girl who doesn't love him. When Mother Sawyer turns to witchcraft after being unjustly accused of it, a talking devil-dog named Tom (performed by a human actor) comes to her aid, becoming her familiar and only friend. Though she intends to get her revenge, little does she know many of those around her are only too willing to sell their souls to the devil all by themselves. The play was inspired by the real-life story of Elizabeth Sawyer, who had been executed for witchcraft on 19 April 1621, and draws heavily on a pamphlet by Henry Goodcole, The wonderful discoverie of Elizabeth Sawyer, Witch (1621). While the pamphlet may be very ready to capitalize on the sensational story of a witch and portray Sawyer as simply a bad woman, the play does not permit an easy and comfortable demonization of her. The Broken Heart stands next to ‘Tis Pity She's a Whore as Ford's most popular drama. All is not right in Sparta because of, as is typical in this era of tragedies, the issue of marriage. In brief, Penthea wishes to marry Orgilus, but her brother Ithocles gets involved and bans them from doing so. He forces her to marry Bassanes, an abusive brute who happens to be wealthier than Orgilus. Ithocles then realises what he's done wrong and tries to get his friend Prophilus to marry Orgilus's sister Euphrania. Ithocles himself wants to marry the princess of Sparta, Calantha, who chooses him over her current betrothed, her cousin Nearchus. Thus begins a shocking cycle of revenge and recrimination... with predictably grisly consequences. It looks at society's mental evolution and what is gained and lost in the process. Written before the first World War, its themes of corruption and the effect of the 20th Century on British aristocracy appeared to predict history. This next volume of the Chronicles of American series investigates Washington's development in the day to day world the various dimensions of the newly conceived Federal government with a president, a congress, a supreme court, a cabinet (his own creation), and a state department. Washington, being a man of great strength and character forged his own way, but was surrounded by all those remarkable men who had been his friends and helpers and challengers too in his past who became his colleagues in the endeavor to make the new form of government succeed against sometimes unforeseen and difficult situations.

Joseph Conrad (1857 – 1924) was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. Though he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he was a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. Conrad wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of what he saw as an impassive, inscrutable universe. Conrad collaborated in some works with Ford Madox Ford. Set immediately before and during the Great War, Some Do Not... is a tale of social cruelty among the English upper classes that pits real honour against shameless duplicity and subjects its principal characters to extremes of mental suffering that appear to be analogous to the (never directly described) physical horrors of the actual fighting. The plot revolves around the mores and desires of the intellectually brilliant but impossibly high-minded Christopher Tietjens, his icy wife Sylvia, and Valentine Wannop, a poor but well-educated young woman who loves Christopher, and is in many ways his moral and intellectual equal. In its time, the novel was unusual for its daring, often disorienting, use of flashbacks within scenes, for its scrambling together of interior and spoken dialog, and for the demand it places on the reader to interpret what is "really" taking place on the basis of slender and widely dispersed clues. As Julian Barnes has written "It will be a very rare reader who does not intermittently look up from the page to ask, ‘But did I know that? 'A Man Could Stand Up' is the third, and culminating, part of Ford Madox Ford's 'Parade's End' tetralogy of novels, which begins with 'Some Do Not', followed by 'No More Parades', and whose coda would be 'Last Post'. While 'A Man Could Stand Up' can be appreciated on its own, it will make far better sense to a listener or reader already familiar with its predecessors. It's at once a war story (the middle section is set in the trenches in France, in 1918), a story of immense upheaval in social mores, and a passionate, if extraordinarily restrained, love story. This is the last novel in Ford Madox Ford's "Parade's End" tetralogy. Its predecessors "Some Do Not", "No More Parades" and "A Man Could Stand Up" are all available on Librivox. In this coda to the tetralogy, the prevailing mood is elegiac. The foreground action takes place on a single day, some years after the Great War has ended, in the rural setting where Christopher Tietjens and his unmarried partner Valentine Wannop have settled down, and where Christopher's older brother lies unmoving under a thatched shelter, having long since suffered a stroke. Valentine is expecting a child, but Christopher's passionately irascible wife Sylvia has plans for upsetting this rural idyl. As always with Ford's mature work, the reader has to do some work to figure out "what is going on" as the tale jumps about in time and between points view, but Ford's display of narrative virtuosity is interlaced throughout with wry humour, and the novel's conclusion is heart-wrenchingly poignant.
