MLOps community meetup #49! Last Wednesday we talked to Lak Lakshmanan, Data Analytics and AI Solutions, Google Cloud. // Abstract: Design patterns are formalized best practices to solve common problems when designing a software system. As machine learning moves from being a research discipline to a software one, it is useful to catalogue tried-and-proven methods to help engineers tackle frequently occurring problems that crop up during the ML process. In this talk, I will cover five patterns (Workflow Pipelines, Transform, Multimodal Input, Feature Store, Cascade) that are useful in the context of adding flexibility, resilience and reproducibility to ML in production. For data scientists and ML engineers, these patterns provide a way to apply hard-won knowledge from hundreds of ML experts to your own projects. Anyone designing infrastructure for machine learning will have to be able to provide easy ways for the data engineers, data scientists, and ML engineers to implement these, and other, design patterns. // Bio: Lak is the Director for Data Analytics and AI Solutions on Google Cloud. Coactive Design is a process that addresses the increasingly complex roles that humans and robots play in modern digitalized systems. It analyzes the interdependencies between members in human-robot teamwork and optimizes interactive collaboration to support the team's overall capabilities. The process endeavors to provide designers and industry players with the necessary analysis tools and techniques to move the industry away from robot-centric automation in which the traditional goal has been for robots to perform required tasks independently from the team. The two outcomes of this thesis are (1) the proposal of an integrated Coactive Systems Engineering Design (COSEED) framework to guide the development of more effective human-machine teaming (HMT) systems and (2) a development exercise for an HMT system to demonstrate the potential gains from the incorporation of the Coactive Design approach into the well-established systems engineering process in the field of inland search and rescue. These result in new findings in how both systems engineering and Coactive Design could be adapted to better complement each other.

This paper illustrates a technique for specifying the detailed timing, logical operation, and compositional circuit design of digital circuits in terms of ordinary state machines with output (transducers). The method is illustrated here with specifications of gates, latches, and other simple circuits and via the construction of devices starting with a SR latch built from gates and then moving on to more complex devices. Circuit timing and transients are treated in some detail. The method is based on "classical" automata and recursive functions on strings. No formal methods, extended state machines, or process algebras are involved but a reference is made to potential applications of the Krohn-Rhodes theorem and other group/monoid based algebraic techniques.

This project involves creating software for support equipment used on the Space l aunch System (SLS). The goal is to create applications and displays that will be used to remotely operate equipment from the firing room and will continue to support the SLS launch vehicle to the extent of its program. These displays include design practices that help to convey information effectively, such as minimizing distractions at normal operating state and displaying intentional distractions during a warning or alarm state. The general practice for creating an operator display is to reduce the detail of unimportant aspects of the display and promote focus on data and dynamic information. These practices include using minimalist design, using muted tones for background colors, using a standard font at a readable text size, displaying alarms visible for Immediate attention, grouping data logically, and displaying data appropriately varying on the type of data. Users of these displays are more likely to stay focused on operating for longer periods by using design practices that reduce eye strain and fatigue. Effective operator displays will improve safety by reducing human errors during operation, which will help prevent catastrophic accidents. This report entails the details of my work on developing remote displays for the Hypergolics ground system. Before developing a prototype display, the design and requirements of the system are outlined and compiled into a document. Then each subsystem has schematic representations drawn tha.t meet the specifications detailed in the document. The schematics are then used as the outline to create display representations of each subsystem. Each display is first tested individually. Then the displays are integrated with a prototype of the master system, and they are tested in a simulated environment then retested in the real environment. Extensive testing is important to ensure the displays function reliably as intended.

The power of today's computers is altering design methodologies at the system level. Instead of manually comparing and contrasting a dozen or so options for configuring a system, machine aids can now quantitatively evaluate thousands of candidate configuration on the time scale of minutes. We apply a machine aid to improve the design of an air-launched missile defense system that intercepts ballistic targets during both their boost and terminal phases. First, the specific problem statement and corresponding quantitative formulation are defined. The discussion then moves on to the overall procedure executed by the machine aid, followed by delving into the quantitative models employed.

Design theory should identify candidate designers, specify design behavior to be measured, and discriminate between behavior of designers and nondesigners. A study evaluated different formats of computerized structural display and data entry to measure design behavior. A program using graph theory as an internal data structure in the computer and as a display to the operator was developed. Graphics display was used to construct a learning task with directed graphs and graphic data entry. The subjects were given varying portions of the spatial cues ordinarily available in fixed display. Results showed that spatial cues offered through interactive graphics were a significant advantage in the learning of directed graphs. When spatial cues were available, no difference between different learning formats was found. When spatial cues were denied during learning, delay of the posttest was detrimental to performance. Regularly ordered formats of displays of directed graphics led to confusion for some individuals. In general, the use of interactive graphics for learning structural digraphs was better than the use of nonspatial media. (CH)

Early in his life Samuel Butler began to carry a note-book and to write down in it anything he wanted to remember; it might be something he heard some one say, more commonly it was something he said himself. In one of these notes he gives a reason for making them:<br></br>“One’s thoughts fly so fast that one must shoot them; it is no use trying to put salt on their tails.”<br></br>So he bagged as many as he could hit and preserved them, re-written on loose sheets of paper which constituted a sort of museum stored with the wise, beautiful, and strange creatures that were continually winging their way across the field of his vision. As he became a more expert marksman his collection increased and his museum grew so crowded that he wanted a catalogue. In 1874 he started an index, and this led to his reconsidering the notes, destroying those that he remembered having used in his published books and re-writing the remainder. The re-writing shortened some but it lengthened others and suggested so many new ones that the index was soon of little use and there seemed to be no finality about it. In 1891 he attached the problem afresh and made it a rule to spend an hour every morning re-editing his notes and keeping his index up to date. At his death, in 1902, he left five bound volumes, with the contents dated and indexed, about 225 pages of closely written sermon paper to each volume, and more than enough unbound and unindexed sheets to made a sixth volume of equal size. - Summary by Henry Festing Jones

Rufus Matthew Jones (January 25, 1863 – June 16, 1948) was an American religious leader, writer, magazine editor, philosopher, and college professor. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Haverford Emergency Unit (a precursor to the American Friends Service Committee). One of the most influential Quakers of the 20th century, he was a Quaker historian and theologian as well as a philosopher. In 1917 he helped found the American Friends Service Committee. This book is an attempt to correct and develop the theory proposed tentatively in the little work Malaria. Put briefly, this theory is as follows. In the struggle for existence man has competed, not only with his fellow-men, but also with wild animals and disease- parasites. The fight against beasts was decided long before the historic period, but parasites have always been, and still are, formidable opponents. Whole tribes have been wiped out by plague, kala-azar and measles; and even when the disease-parasite does not win such a decisive victory, it often weakens a nation so much that the latter falls an easy victim to its healthier neighbours. This volume will show how malaria played a part in the decline of the ancient Greeks, along with statistics presented from the Greek Anti Malarial League, and evaluation of malarial literature.
