In the present study, we investigate whether people’s judgments of lying are prone to partisan bias, which describes the tendency of people to evaluate identical information more favorably when it supports rather than challenges their political allegiances and beliefs. This experiment is a follow-up to the experiment registered at https://osf.io/zecps. While the previous experiment focused on the role of people’s allegiances (i.e., whether a (mis)match between people’s own political orientation and the political orientation of a deceiving agent influences their lie judgments), the present experiment is focused on the role of people’s political beliefs (i.e., whether a (mis)match between people’s own political beliefs and the political beliefs expressed by a deceiving agent influences their lie judgments). Participants will be presented with a set of deceptive implicatures and corresponding straight-out lies (control condition) that differ with regard to the beliefs the deceiving agents express about two controversial topics (i.e., abortion in Experiment 1a and the COVID-19 vaccine in Experiment 1b). Participants will be asked to indicate whether they believe that each deception constitutes a case of lying and/or misleading, while participants own beliefs with regard to the two topics (i.e., supporting vs. opposing abortion in Experiment 1a, supporting vs. opposing the vaccine in Experiment 1b) will be assessed upon completion of each experiment.

The low-lying states of light nuclei $^6$He and $^6$Be are studied. Using the inherent nodal surface(INS) analysis approach, we deduce the quantum numbers and the spatial symmetries of the low-lying states with positive parity and negative parity of the two nuclei. The energy spectrum obtained agrees well with the experimental data.

We study the oblate-prolate shape mixing in the low-lying states of proton-rich Kr isotopes using the five-dimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian. The collective Hamiltonian is derived microscopically by means of the CHFB (constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov) + Local QRPA (quasiparticle random phase approximation) method, which we have developed recently on the basis of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method. The results of the numerical calculation show the importance of large-amplitude collective vibrations in the triaxial shape degree of freedom and rotational effects on the oblate-prolate shape mixing dynamics in the low-lying states of these isotopes.

We analyse an asymptotic low-dimensional model of anti-plane shear in a thin bi-material strip containing a periodic array of interfacial cracks. Both ideal and non-ideal interfaces are considered. We find that the previously derived asymptotic models display a degree of inaccuracy in predicting standing wave eigenfrequencies and suggest an improvement to the asymptotic model to address this discrepancy. Computations demonstrate that the correction to the standing wave eigenfrequencies greatly improve the accuracy of the low-dimensional model.

Platonic crystals (PCs) are the elastic plate analogue of the photonic crystals widely used in optics, and are thin structured elastic plates along which flexural waves cannot propagate within certain stop band frequency intervals. The practical importance of PCs is twofold: these can be used either in the design of microstructured acoustic metamaterials or as an approximate model for surface elastic waves propagating in meter scale seismic metamaterials. Here, we make use of the band spectrum of PCs created with very small clamped holes, the nails of the title, to achieve surface wave reflectors at very large wavelengths, a flat lens, an endoscope, a directive antenna near stop band frequencies and cloaking from Dirac cones. The point pinned, Faqir, plate is particularly appealing as there is an exact dispersion relation available so the origin of these phenomena can be explained and interpreted using Fourier series and high frequency homogenization.

The branching ratio and other observables for the rare flavour-changing neutral current decay \bar B_d^0 -> \bar K*0 (-> K- pi+) e+ e- are studied below the \bar{c} c threshold. The total amplitude for this decay includes the term coming from the standard model effective Hamiltonian and the term generated by the processes \bar B_d^0 -> \bar K*0 (-> K- pi+) V with intermediate low-lying vector resonances V = rho(770), omega(782), phi(1020) decaying into the e+ e- pair. The resonance contribution to the branching ratio, polarization fractions of the K* meson and coefficients in the angular distribution is calculated. The influence of the resonances on the integrated observables in the region of electron-positron invariant mass up to 1 GeV is studied in view of the planned measurements of the photon polarization at the LHCb.

A theoretical analysis of the single-state dominance hypothesis for the two-neutrino double-beta decay rates is performed on the examples of the double-beta decays of 100Mo, 116Cd, and 128Te. We also test the validity of an extended low-lying-state dominance that takes into account the contributions of the low-lying excited states in the intermediate nucleus to the double-beta decay rates. This study has been accomplished for all the double-beta emitters for which we have experimental information on their half-lives. The theoretical framework is a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation based on a deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean field with pairing correlations. Our calculations indicate that there are not clear evidences for single- or low-lying-state dominance in the two-neutrino double-beta decay. Finally, we investigate the single electron energy distributions of the outgoing electrons in the double-beta decay processes with an exact treatment of the energy denominators, which could help to a more comprehensive analysis of NEMO-3 data.

We report systematic $^{75}$As NMR studies on LaFeAs(O$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$) ($0\le x\le0.14$). At $x=0.04$ near the phase boundary, from resistivity, spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$, and NMR spectrum measurements, we found weak magnetic order at $T_N\simeq 30$ K. Antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations proved through $1/T_1$ are suppressed significantly with F-doping, and pseudogap behavior without pronounced AFM fluctuations is observed at $x=0.11$ where $T_c$ is maximum. This significant suppression of $1/T_1T$ upon F-doping while $T_c$ remains nearly unchanged suggests that low-energy AFM fluctuations probed with $^{75}$As NMR do not play a crucial role in the superconductivity.

Low-lying $\Lambda$ baryons with spin 1/2 are analyzed in full (unquenched) lattice QCD. We construct $2 \times 2$ cross correlators from flavor SU(3) "octet" and "singlet" baryon operators, and diagonalize them so as to extract information of two low-lying states for each parity. The two-flavor CP-PACS gauge configurations are used, which are generated in the renormalization-group improved gauge action and the ${\mathcal O}(a)$-improved quark action. Three different $\beta$'s, $\beta = 1.80$, 1.95 and 2.10, are employed, whose corresponding lattice spacings are $a = 0.2150$, 0.1555 and 0.1076 fm. For each cutoff, we use four hopping parameters, ($\kappa_{\rm val}, \kappa_{\rm sea}$), which correspond to the pion masses ranging about from 500 MeV to 1.1 GeV. Results indicate that there are two negative-parity $\Lambda$ states nearly degenerate at around 1.6 GeV, while no state as low as $\Lambda (1405)$ is observed. By decomposing the flavor components of each state, we find that the lowest (1st-excited) negative-parity state is dominated by flavor-singlet (flavor-octet) component. We also discuss meson-baryon components of each state, which has drawn considerable attention in the context of multi-quark pictures of $\Lambda (1405)$.

In the framework of the quasiparticle-phonon model, we study the non-statistical proton decay of excited states in odd nuclei towards low-lying collective states. Partial cross sections and branching ratios for the proton decay of the high angular momentum states in $^{41}$Sc, $^{59}$Cu and $^{91}$Nb %{\it excited by means of the ($^{7}$Li,$^{6}$He) reaction} are evaluated. The calculated branching ratios predict strong direct proton decays to the low-lying vibrational states in $^{41}$Sc and $^{91}$Nb. A general agreement with existing experimental data is found.

We investigate the effects of low-lying fermion eigenmodes on the QCD partition function in the $\epsilon$-regime. The fermion determinant is approximated by a truncated product of low-lying eigenvalues of the overlap-Dirac operator. With two flavors of dynamical quarks, we observe that the lattice results for the lowest eigenvalue distribution, eigenvalue sum rules and partition function reproduce the analytic predictions made by Leutwyler and Smilga, which strongly depend on the topological charge of the background gauge configuration. The value of chiral condensate extracted from these measurements are consistent with each other. For one dynamical quark flavor, on the other hand, we find an apparent disagreement among different determinations of the chiral condensate, which may suggest the failure of the $\epsilon$-expansion in the absence of massless Nambu-Goldstone boson.

Since the work of Ellingsrud and Peskine at the end of 1980s, it has been known that, with the exception of a finite number of families, smooth compact complex surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$ with prescribed Chern classes must lie on hypersurfaces of degree $m\leq 5$. The study of surfaces lying on a small degree hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^4$---small meaning $\leq5$---seems to be a way of obtaining empirical data leading to a better conceptual understanding of surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$. From this perspective, two main issues are considered in the paper: - an analogue of the Hartshorne-Lichtenbaum finiteness results for smooth surfaces of general type contained in a small degree hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^4$, - a study of the irregularity of smooth surfaces contained in a small degree hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^4$.

In a previous study (O'Connell et al., 2021), we measured participants EFT ability (episodic future thought; that is the ability to visualise future events via mental images) and asked them to perform a truthful and a deceptive future planning task in written and verbal format. We found that higher EFT individuals were more credible liars than lower EFT individuals. The current series of studies aim explore whether our previous EFT finding applies to lying about a current topic (i.e., participant's occupation - as opposed to a future event in our previous study). We also wish to explore whether participants with higher EFT ability respond differently to unanticipated questions than those with lower EFT ability. We will do this via 4 studies. Study A (pilot study; N=30) has been conducted and examined which questions (about their occupation) participants considered unanticipated. In Study B we will ask participants to tell the truth and lie about their occupation and then ask unanticipated questions about their workplace (including asking them to sketch a layout of their workplace). In Study C we will examine whether higher EFT individuals are judged as more credible than lower EFT individuals by asking a separate group of participants to judge the veracity of participant's responses from the true and false occupation interviews (Study B). To examine whether higher EFT individual's sketches are judged as more genuine than lower EFT individual's sketches, in Study D we will use the truthful and deceptive sketches of the layout of participants workplaces (from Study B) and ask a separate group of participants to judge the genuineness and plausibility of the sketches.
