Axisymmetric free-boundary equilibrium reconstructions of tokamak plasmas in the Lithium Tokamak eXperiment (LTX) are performed using the PSI-Tri equilibrium code. Reconstructions in LTX are complicated by the presence of long-lived non-axisymmetric eddy currents generated by vacuum vessel and first wall structures. To account for this effect, reconstructions are performed with additional toroidal current sources in these conducting regions. The source distributions are fixed poloidally, but their scale is adjusted as part of the full reconstruction. Eddy distributions are computed by toroidally averaging currents, generated by coupling to vacuum field coils, from a simplified 3D filament model of important conducting structures. The full 3D eddy current fields are also used to enable the inclusion of local magnetic field measurements, which have strong 3D eddy current pick-up, as reconstruction constraints. Using this method, equilibrium reconstruction yields good agreement with all available diagnostic signals. An accompanying field perturbation produced by 3D eddy currents on the plasma surface with primarily n=2, m=1 character is also predicted for these equilibria.

We report on two novel ways for patterning Lithium Niobate (LN) at submicronic scale by means of focused ion beam (FIB) bombardment. The first method consists of direct FIB milling on LiNbO3 and the second one is a combination of FIB milling on a deposited metallic layer and subsequent RIE (Reactive Ion Etching) etching. FIB images show in both cases homogeneous structures with well reproduced periodicity. These methods open the way to the fabrication of photonic crystals on LiNbO3 substrates.

Dark blue microcrystalline powders produced from lithium metal and the cation complexing agent cryptand 2.1.1 (C211) were prepared from ammonia and from methylamine solutions. The mole ratio of lithium to cryptand, R, was varied from 0.60 to 2.0 but there was no evidence for Li(-). The optical and magnetic properties indicate that Li(+)C211.e(-) is an electride, a member of the class of materials in which the anions are electrons. Samples were studied by optical transmission spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and microwave and D.C. conductivities. In many cases several methods were used to characterize samples prepared from the same solution; correlation among the various properties is high.

Inner-shell vacancy production for the O$^{8+}$-Li collision system at 1.5 MeV/amu is studied theoretically. The theory combines single-electron amplitudes for each electron in the system to extract multielectron information about the collision process. Doubly-differential cross sections obtained in this way are then compared with the recent experimental data by LaForge et al. [J. Phys. B 46, 031001 (2013)] yielding good resemblance, especially for low outgoing electron energy. A careful analysis of the processes that contribute to inner-shell vacancy production shows that the improvement of the results as compared to single-active-electron calculations can be attributed to the leading role of two-electron excitation-ionization processes.

State of Charge (SoC) prediction for lithium-ion batteries indicates the amount of electrical energy available for usage by the drivers of the electric vehicle (EV). Understanding and accurately measuring SoC levels allows effective battery management. Charging infrastructure operates at its optimal point with known battery SoC levels, therefore increasing the optimal performance in various applications such as electric vehicles. A model was developed using simple battery equivalent circuits for prediction of the SoC using data analysis predictive tools. The limitations on SoC prediction using this methodology using the ratio of the remaining capacity of the battery after use to its rated nominal capacity was revised to reflect the actual SoC remaining based on aging factors. Advantages in accurate SoC estimation were drawn from its help in managing the device usage plans, enabling battery management systems for optimal usage, contributing to the overall health of the battery, and improving the safety of users. Past literature recorded many factors (temperature, current load, age, and self-discharge), but limited information is available on improved life from varying battery chemistry.

Sodium sulfate hot corrosion of a SiC fiber-reinforced lithium aluminosilicate (LAS) glass-ceramic matrix composite was studied using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Changes in the microstructural chemical composition of the specimens were investigated. The samples provided by Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), Warminster, PA were grouped as follows: (1) as-received, (2) Na2SO4 salt-coated and heat-treated in oxygen, (3) noncoated and heat-treated in oxygen, (4) Na2S4. Salt-coated and heat- treated in argon, and (5) noncoated and heat-treated in argon. Heat treatment was performed by NAWC for 100 hours at 900 deg C. Experimental data obtained indicated that the presence of Na2SO4 in an oxidative environment resulted in rapid corrosion of the matrix and SiC fibers and in the latter rings of SiO2 replaced what had previously been SiC. There was very limited degradation of the fibers and matrix exposed at the surface in the noncoated sample heat-treated in oxygen and in the salt-coated sample heat-treated in argon. A significant reduction in the amount of mullite in the matrices of all heat-treated samples was observed. Mullite dissolved into either the glassy phase or into the Beta- spodumene matrix. Lastly, the presence of distinct magnesium silicate crystalline phases in the salt-coated and heat-treated in oxygen sample implies that the MgO at the surface reacted with the SiO2 in the matrix.

THE METHODS OF COMPUTING EXCITATION CROSS SECTIONS OF NEUTRAL ATOMS AND POSITIVE IONS BY ELECTRON IMPACT ARE CONSIDERED. THE THEORY OF RACAH TENSOR OPERATORS WAS APPLIED TO THE CALCULATION OF POTENTIALS TAKING PART IN COLLISION PROBLEMS. THE APPLICATION OF THE METHOD WAS DISCUSSED FOR CROSS SECTION COMPUTATION IN THE CASE OF RESONANCE TRANSITIONS IN THE ISOELECTRONIC LITHIUM AND SODIUM SERIES. THE RESULTS FROM THESE APPROXIMATIONS WERE COMPARED TO THOSE OBTAINED USING THE METHOD OF SOLVING COUPLED EQUATION PROBLEMS, AS WELL AS THE METHOD OF BETHE AND COLLISION IMPACT PARAMETER APPROXIMATIONS. IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE IMPACTS CORRESPONDING TO LARGE KINETIC MOMENTS ARE PREDOMINANT, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF AREAS CLOSE TO THE EXCITATION THRESHOLD.

A new series of polymer electrolytes for use as membranes for lithium batteries are described. Electrolytes were made by polymerization between cyanuric chloride and diamino-terminated poly(ethylene oxide)s, followed by cross-linking via a sol-gel process. Thermal analysis and lithium conductivity of freestanding polymer films were studied. The effects of several variables on conductivity were investigated, such as length of backbone PEO chain, length of branching PEO chain, extent of branching, extent of cross-linking, salt content, and salt counterion. Polymer films with the highest percentage of PEO were found to be the most conductive, with a maximum lithium conductivity of 3.9 x 10(exp -5) S/cm at 25 C. Addition of plasticizer to the dry polymers increased conductivity by an order of magnitude.

Clotel; or, The President's Daughter is a novel by William Wells Brown (1814-84), a fugitive from slavery and abolitionist and was published in London, England in December 1853. It is often considered the first African-American novel. This novel focuses on the difficult lives of mulattoes in America and the "degraded and immoral condition of the relation of master and slave in the USA" (Brown). It is about the tragic lives of Currer, Althesea, and Clotel. In the novel, Currer is the former mulatto mistress of President Thomas Jefferson who together have two daughters, Althesea and Clotel. Because she was beautiful and the mistress of Jefferson, Currer and her daughters lived a confortable life, this changed when her master passes away. In the end, Currer and Althesea are auctioned to the notorious slave trader, Dick Walker. Clotel is bought by her lover Horatio Green. The separation of these three women is just the beginning of the injustices they face.<br><br>It gained notoriety amid the unconfirmed rumors regarding Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings. Brown was still considered someone else's legal property within the borders of the United States at the time of its publication. It is considered to be the first novel written by an African American.<br><br>Brown used the injustices of slavery to demonstrate the destructive effects it had on the African American family, most significantly the so-called tragic mulatto. William Wells Brown was born a slave, near Lexington, Kentucky. His mother, Elizabeth, was a slave--his father a white man who never acknowledged his paternity. Brown escaped slavery at about the age of 20. For many years he worked as a steamboatman and as a conductor for the Underground Railroad in Buffalo, New York. In 1843, he became a lecturer for the Western New York Anti-Slavery Society, and was a contemporary of Frederick Douglass.<br /><br />Brown went to Europe in 1849 to encourage British support for the anti-slavery movement in the United States. He remained there until 1854 when British abolitionists purchased his freedom. Soon afterward, he returned to the United States to continue his work in the abolitionist movement.<br /><br />Throughout his life, he wrote several books, including his autobiography, Clotel, and, The Rising Son; or, The Antecedents and Advancement of the Colored Race, among others. He was also the author of two plays.<br /><br />Three Years In Europe; Or, Places I Have Seen and People I Have Met is a series of letters that Brown wrote to certain of his friends. A few were destined for publication in The Liberator, the famed abolitionist journal published by Frederick Douglass. Dedications is an anthology of the forms used from the earliest days of book-making to the present time. My purpose in the following anthology of dedications has been to make a representative, rather than an exhaustive collection. My first idea was to take only beautiful dedications, and above all those which showed thought and originality. I next sought those which were quaint and curious, grave and gay, and then wandering through the wide field of English literature, tried to have each section of it represented. Dedications which brought one in touch with the world of religion, philanthropy, the fine arts, science, nature and travel have also claimed my attention. Then, narrowing my interest, I searched for those to celebrated people, or by celebrated people, even though the dedications were not particularly desirable in themselves. I was anxious to include great heroes, as David Livingstone, and when unable to obtain dedications to them I substituted books by them or about them. A collection of some of the most significant literary work on the English Lake District prior to Thomas West’s A guide to the Lakes (1778). The poet Thomas Gray takes the reader from Brough south to Kendal on his return from a tour in Scotland. An agricultural reformer, Arthur Young, also returning from Scotland, begins his journey in the northern parts of Cumberland with dry descriptions of local farming, but on arriving in Keswick, his account turns to the picturesque scenery around Derwent Water, Ullswater and Windermere. ‘Wild and romantic’ is Young’s phrase, yet the agriculturalist in him comes to the fore as he declares the enclosed landscapes around Kendal and Windermere to be the most picturesque of all. Thomas Pennant’s account of his journey through the district is cursory, and he seems not have noticed the lakes or mountains at all. West’s Guide quotes Gray, Young and Pennant, and its second edition included the full text of Gray’s unpublished letters as an addendum. It also included four short pieces. John Brown’s letter to his former pupil William Gilpin (who would become the foremost exponent of the ‘picturesque’) connects the scenery of the Lakes to European landscape painting. Experimental philosopher Adam Walker provides a note on a local curiosity, the underground passages of Dunald Mill Hole. <i>The Power of Sympathy</i> was the first American novel, published in Boston in January 1789. An epistolary novel, it tells the tragic story of the relationship of an orphan girl and a man of good family, with a dramatic twist and tragic ending. It was inspired by an actual scandal in the Apthorp family of Boston, the "Ophelia" and "Martin" related within the story.<br /><br /> It was published anonymously, and there has been controversy over the authorship. For over a century his family kept the author's identity secret. Boston antiquarians eventually fixed upon the poet Sarah (Apthorp) Morton as the probable author, despite that she was the sister of the victim and married to the alleged seducer in the real-life scandal.
