This volume is third in a series of 10 publications intended to provide practical or trend-oriented information related to serving children and youth with mental retardation, autism, and other developmental disabilities. Chapter 1 discusses the history of characters with mental retardation or developmental disabilities in children's literature. Chapter 2 highlights the positive portrayal of characters with mental retardation or developmental disabilities in quality children's literature. Current trends and values are discussed, as well as general aspects of quality literature and illustrations in children's books. Chapter 3 discusses strategies for using children's books that include characters with mental retardation or developmental disabilities, including concept infusion and guided discussion techniques. The rest of the book includes appendices with annotated bibliographies of fictional picture books and fictional chapter books, activities for using children's literature including characters with mental retardation or developmental disabilities, and an explanation of the Dolly Gray Children's Literature Award. Annotated bibliographies include information on the content regarding mental retardation or developmental disabilities and content regarding other curricular areas. Each book is rated in its quality. This article presents an applied educational program for early years children with three thematic objectives, i.e. empathy, disabilities and visual arts. The program took place in Children's Museum of Thessaloniki and focused on the reflection between the text and image generally. The participants were twenty children from 4-8 years old, as the program was designed for early childhood education students. The program was theoretically based on the principals of Social Pedagogy, the methods and the techniques which were considered appropriate, were related to experiential activities, use of artworks and creative writing. The artworks that were used in the program originate from Greek visual arts of the 19th and 20th century and depict images of disability. The use of literary narration and visual arts especially in early childhood education constitutes an alternative, interactive and effective tool in order to teach issues that are related to social phenomena, to impart the value of respect in diversity and to reinforce the value of inclusion. Teachers can help students develop an understanding of social and cultural meaning in art, and can provide students with the tools to understand their culture, by recognizing art as a cultural carrier, using a critical literacy framework. In this program, children had the chance to create their stories and to talk about diversity, to discover their senses and to express their feelings playing and learning by experience.

This literature review discusses the need for rehabilitation organizations to become culturally competent and for rehabilitation research to reach and be utilized by minority populations. Sections address the incidence of disability in minority populations, the socially constructed nature of race, culture, and disability, cultural power and the perpetuation of inequity, cultural and other considerations that can influence effectiveness within the rehabilitation system, and characteristics of effective systems and relationships. Following suggestions for developing culturally competent organizations, recommendations for research are provided and include: (1) grounding decisions about research purposes and hypotheses in a thorough knowledge of potential user audiences; (2) examining assumptions inherent in the goals, hypotheses, and methods of the intended research; (3) exploring a variety of research methodologies; (4) defining all variables fully; (5) using sampling techniques that provide adequate representation among all targeted audiences; (6) structuring data collection activities to ensure an appropriate rate of return for all targeted subpopulations; (7) carefully considering within-group as well as between-group differences; (8) seeking input and feedback from representatives of target audiences in identifying data collection procedures and instruments, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions; and (9) using multiple dissemination strategies and media. This bibliography is an annotated listing of experiential literature focusing on young people and disability. It includes selected fiction and nonfiction works, written between 1975 and 1990, which present positive portrayals of young people with special needs. The bibliography is organized by sections according to major disability categories, then divided into fiction and nonfiction, and then divided by reading level (adult, young adult, intermediate, and primary). Disability categories include: behavior disorders; deaf-blind; general disability issues; hearing impairments; mental retardation; multihandicaps; orthopedic impairments; other health impairments; specific learning disabilities; speech/language impairments; and visual impairments. Two researchers will conduct title/abstract screening, full-text reviews, and data extraction. The two remaining team members will be consulted to resolve conflicts. Inductive analysis will be used to identify major themes and outcomes that will contribute to the literature.

This literature review discusses cultural influences on individuals with disabilities and describes three historical models of disability--the moral model, medical model, and sociological/environmental/civil rights/minority group model. The use of alcohol and drugs by disabled persons is explored, focusing on individuals with orthopedic and sensory disabilities, developmental disabilities, and dual diagnosis (psychiatric disability concurrent with an alcohol and/or drug problem). The contents of the volume 13, number 2 issue of "Alcohol Health and Research World," described as the definitive document on disability and alcohol problems, are summarized. This project is part of a larger School of Rehabilitation Science initiative addressing the experience of students with disabilities in health professional programs with intersecting cultural identities. The project focuses on students with disabilities who also identify with other groups who have been historically denied equity. While we are interested in culture (i.e., race, ethnicity, religion), the scope of this study will include all systems of inequality (e.g., classism, racism, settler colonialism, heterosexism, etc.) (Nixon, 2019). There is no primary data collection with participants. Researchers will conduct a scoping review of the literature to find sources discussing the intersectionality and health professional education literature that identify “ableism” as one system of inequality, in addition to others. Expected outcomes include differences in perceived sense of belonging, retention, burnout, and well-being for students who hold multiple identities alongside their disability.

Examining the intersection of disability and genre in popular works of horror, crime, science fiction, fantasy, and romance published since the late 1960s, Disability, Literature, Genre is a major contribution to both cultural disability studies and genre fiction studies. Drawing on recent work on affect and emotion, the book explores how disability makes us feel, and how those feelings shape interpersonal and fictional encounters. Written in a clear and accessible style, Disability, Literature, Genre offers a timely reflection on the rapidly growing body of scholarship on disability representation, as well as an innovative new theorisation of genre. By reconceptualising genre reading as an affective process, Ria Cheyne establishes genre fiction as a key site of investigation for disability studies. She argues that genre fiction’s unique combination of affectivity and reflexivity makes it ideally suited to the production of reflexive representations of disability: representations which encourage the reader to reflect upon what they understand about disability, and potentially to rethink it. Examining the affective—and effective—power of disability representations in a wide range of popular genre fiction, this book will be essential reading for academics in disability studies, literary studies, popular culture studies, and the medical humanities.

Abstract Background: There are a number of instruments that describe severity and progression of multiple sclerosis and they are increasingly used as endpoints to assess the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. We examined to what extent the psychometric properties of two accepted instruments – EDSS and MSFC – meet methodological standards and the value they have in clinical trials. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search in relevant databases [MEDLINE (PubMed), ISI Web of Science, EMBASE, PsycINFO & PSYNDEX, CINAHL] yielding 3,860 results. Relevant full-text publications were identified using abstract and then full-text reviews, and the literature was reviewed. Results: For evaluation of psychometric properties (validity, reliability, sensitivity of change) of EDSS and MSFC, 120 relevant full-text publications were identified, 54 of them assessed the EDSS, 26 the MSFC and 40 included both instruments. The EDSS has some documented weaknesses in reliability and sensitivity to change. The main limitations of the MSFC are learning effects and the z-scores method used to calculate the total score. However, the methodological criterion of validity applies sufficiently for both instruments.For use in clinical studies, we found the EDSS to be preferred as a primary and secondary outcome measure in recent studies (50 EDSS, 9 MSFC). Conclusions: Recognizing their strengths and weaknesses, both EDSS and MSFC are suitable to detect the effectiveness of clinical interventions and to monitor disease progression. Almost all publications identify the EDSS as the most widely used tool to measure disease outcomes in clinical trials. Despite some limitations, both instruments are accepted as endpoints and neither are discussed as surrogate parameters in identified publications. A great advantage of the EDSS is its international acceptance (e.g. by EMA) as a primary endpoint in clinical trials and its broad use in trials, enabling cross-study comparisons.

Disability narratives serve as a bridge between myth and realism, offering a profound lens through which to examine human diversity and societal constructs. While mythological depictions often reduce disability to symbolic archetypes—representing moral flaws, divine punishment, or extraordinary wisdom—realist narratives ground disability in the lived experiences of individuals, highlighting systemic injustices and cultural biases. This evolution in representation dismantles stereotypes, portraying disabled individuals as complex, multifaceted members of society. Works like Dickens’  Bleak House  or Harper Lee’s  To Kill a Mockingbird  challenge reductive tropes, fostering empathy and broader understanding. Disability narratives thus underscore the importance of inclusivity, revealing how race, class, and gender intersect with disability. By engaging with these stories, literature not only critiques societal norms but also champions equity and dignity. In doing so, disability narratives inspire a reevaluation of cultural values, enriching both literary discourse and social consciousness.

The social construction of disability is an issue that needs to be analysed and examined in order to arrive at a proper understanding of the discipline. Disability studies from the beginning of its journey has undergone many changes of perspectives, from a medically determined categorisation to a social model of disability, thereby leading to a distinction between impairment and disability. In spite of these transitions, society still fails to possess a more sensitive attitude. Among different categories of reservation among government policies, we come across a category called “PWD” which means Persons with Disabilities. Although this categorisation is supposed to provide more opportunities to differently abled people but the nomenclature itself is derogatory. The objective of this paper is to analyse a Graphic novel Mai by Sriram Jagannath to find out how the issue of disability is received by the society and the efficacy of the graphic medium to bring about a change in perspective regarding people with disabilities. 

Literature and Disability introduces readers to the field of disability studies and the ways in which a focus on issues of impairment and the representation of disability can provide new approaches to reading and writing about literary texts. Disability plays a central role in much of the most celebrated literature, yet it is only in recent years that literary criticism has begun to consider the aesthetic, ethical and literary challenges that this poses.The author explores:key debates and issues in disability studies todaydifferent forms of impairment, with the aim of showing the diversity and ambiguity of the term "disability"the intersection between literary critical approaches to disability and feminist, post-colonial, and autobiographical writinggenre and representations of disability in relation to literary forms including novels, short stories, poems, plays and life writingThis volume provides students and academics with an accessible overview of literary critical approaches to disability representation.

The first was to describe how the EOA National Best Practices Clearinghouse identified, described, and evaluated evidence that was focused on effective educational practices for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) and TRIO students who were economically disadvantaged, first-generation college attendees, and historically underrepresented in education. No other open-access clearinghouse in the nation is solely focused on this marginalized student population. The second purpose for this history was to provide effective principles for providing an effective practice clearinghouse so that other organizations could create their own clearinghouse. (Method) Documents and procedural manuals were reviewed and interviews with more than a dozen individuals were conducted to provide an accurate history of the clearinghouse and a critical critique of its operation. Utilizing principles of critical historical analysis, the history concluded with a final section entitled "lessons learned" that provided the critique and recommended actions for operational improvement. The clearinghouse was located at http://besteducationpractices.org An earlier draft of this history document was reviewed by a dozen educators who were familiar with the Clearinghouse operation over the past decade. Their recommended revisions were incorporated into the final version of the history. (Results) As documented through previously approved annual ERIC reports, the Clearinghouse approved nearly fifty administrative and educational practices that represent each of the five major federally-funded TRIO and GEAR UP programs: (a) Educational Talent Search, (b) Upward Bound, (c) Educational Opportunity Centers, (d) Disability Services, (e) Student Support Services, (f) Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement, and (g) GEAR UP. Since its inception, the website each month has been visited by an average of six hundred educators from 55 countries. (Implications) Based on this report, other organizations could adopt and adapt the procedures from the EOA Clearinghouse. This report explored the need for a clearinghouse, definitions for a best education practice, review of the professional literature concerning other education practice clearinghouses, the history of events in the life of this clearinghouse, and finally, lessons learned from this clearinghouse that could be helpful to others who wanted to create their own clearinghouse. The appendices contain the qualifications for the External Expert Panel and criteria for evaluation of administrative and educational practices. While programs in the field may all do essentially the same thing, they often do it differently to meet the unique needs of their students and the education setting. The EOA Clearinghouse honors that ingenuity and shares it with others. 1Lady's Life on a Farm in Manitoba

In 1881, Mrs. Cecil Hall's brother went to Manitoba to farm. In 1882, she went out for a visit of some two months, and followed that visit with a long sojourn in Colorado, returning to England as the snows began to fall. While there, she had to give up her "Lady's ways" and help on the farm in many ways she'd never stoop to at home. She makes hay, cooks, paints the barn roof, and cleans. Through it all, the newness helped her keep her temper, and these letters home show an insight into the settlement of Western Canada. High Adventure A Narrative of Air Fighting in France by James Norman Hall; you will find this book although an exciting narrative has an unpolished feel because it was published in June of 1918 while Mr. Hall was a captive in a German POW camp. When he was captured behind enemy lines, the book was still a work in progress. The Armistice would not be reached until November of that year.<br /><br />Although he does not mention it in this book, Mr. Hall had already served the better part of 15 months with the British Expeditionary Forces, surviving the battle of Loos in Sept – Oct 1915, and upon which his excellent work “Kitchener’s” Mob is Based.<br /><br />The US did not enter the war until April 1917, and Hall had already served nearly three years as an American with British and French forces, as a machine gunner with the British, and as a pilot in the Lafayette Escadrille.<br /><br />Pilot training in the French Air Corps was primarily a matter of survival. Visualize if you will, a class of “Penguins”, aircraft with wings too short for flight scurrying about the airfield as student pilots learn to control these machines with no instructor on board, and for that matter in Mr. Halls case there was never an instructor on board. Their solo flight was their first flight. They learned by doing.<br /><br />The sheer joy and wonder of man’s early experience of leaving the bounds of Earth in an aircraft coupled with the danger and excitement of air combat made “High Adventure” such a good read, I completed the narration ahead of schedule, because I couldn’t put it down<br /><br />Mike Vendetti, Narrator

Henry Martyn (1781-1812), a brilliant and ambitious young student in Cambridge, England, was led by God to be a missionary to India and Persia. While pastoring, starting schools, and teaching the locals as well as Europeans through his role as chaplain for the East India Company, he worked on several far-reaching Bible translations.
