2ERIC ED585861: Diversity And Disability In Visual Arts, Children's Literature, Play And Creative Writing: An Educational Program For Children In Early Childhood Education In A Non-Formal Educational Setting
By ERIC
This article presents an applied educational program for early years children with three thematic objectives, i.e. empathy, disabilities and visual arts. The program took place in Children's Museum of Thessaloniki and focused on the reflection between the text and image generally. The participants were twenty children from 4-8 years old, as the program was designed for early childhood education students. The program was theoretically based on the principals of Social Pedagogy, the methods and the techniques which were considered appropriate, were related to experiential activities, use of artworks and creative writing. The artworks that were used in the program originate from Greek visual arts of the 19th and 20th century and depict images of disability. The use of literary narration and visual arts especially in early childhood education constitutes an alternative, interactive and effective tool in order to teach issues that are related to social phenomena, to impart the value of respect in diversity and to reinforce the value of inclusion. Teachers can help students develop an understanding of social and cultural meaning in art, and can provide students with the tools to understand their culture, by recognizing art as a cultural carrier, using a critical literacy framework. In this program, children had the chance to create their stories and to talk about diversity, to discover their senses and to express their feelings playing and learning by experience.

By ERIC
This literature review discusses the need for rehabilitation organizations to become culturally competent and for rehabilitation research to reach and be utilized by minority populations. Sections address the incidence of disability in minority populations, the socially constructed nature of race, culture, and disability, cultural power and the perpetuation of inequity, cultural and other considerations that can influence effectiveness within the rehabilitation system, and characteristics of effective systems and relationships. Following suggestions for developing culturally competent organizations, recommendations for research are provided and include: (1) grounding decisions about research purposes and hypotheses in a thorough knowledge of potential user audiences; (2) examining assumptions inherent in the goals, hypotheses, and methods of the intended research; (3) exploring a variety of research methodologies; (4) defining all variables fully; (5) using sampling techniques that provide adequate representation among all targeted audiences; (6) structuring data collection activities to ensure an appropriate rate of return for all targeted subpopulations; (7) carefully considering within-group as well as between-group differences; (8) seeking input and feedback from representatives of target audiences in identifying data collection procedures and instruments, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions; and (9) using multiple dissemination strategies and media. 5The Exploration Of Ability/disability In Intersectionality And Health Professional Education Literature: A Scoping Review
By Kevon Jules, Arta Taghavi Haghayegh, Shaminder Dhillon and Sarah Wojkowski, MSc.PT, PhD.
Abstract Purpose: There is growing recognition of the need to support students with disabilities in health professional programs (HPPs); however, limited research addresses how intersecting social identities compound their experiences. This scoping review will explore literature focused on the intersectionality of ability/disability and other social identities within HPPs, guided by the Coin Model of Privilege and Critical Allyship (Nixon, 2019). Methods: Using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, a comprehensive search will be conducted across six databases (CINAHL, ERIC, Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase, Ovid EmCare, and Web of Science) and three Google Advanced domains (“.ca”, “.com”, and “.co.uk”) to identify literature published between 2005 to March 2025. Inclusion criteria will require full-text English-language sources focused on students with any disability and intersecting identities such as race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and religion. Two researchers will conduct title/abstract screening, full-text reviews, and data extraction. The two remaining team members will be consulted to resolve conflicts. Inductive analysis will be used to identify major themes and outcomes that will contribute to the literature.

This literature review discusses cultural influences on individuals with disabilities and describes three historical models of disability--the moral model, medical model, and sociological/environmental/civil rights/minority group model. The use of alcohol and drugs by disabled persons is explored, focusing on individuals with orthopedic and sensory disabilities, developmental disabilities, and dual diagnosis (psychiatric disability concurrent with an alcohol and/or drug problem). 9The Exploration Of Ability/disability In Intersectionality And Health Professional Education Literature: A Scoping Review
By Kevon Jules, Arta Taghavi Haghayegh, Shaminder Dhillon and Sarah Wojkowski, MSc.PT, PhD.
This project is part of a larger School of Rehabilitation Science initiative addressing the experience of students with disabilities in health professional programs with intersecting cultural identities. The project focuses on students with disabilities who also identify with other groups who have been historically denied equity. While we are interested in culture (i.e., race, ethnicity, religion), the scope of this study will include all systems of inequality (e.g., classism, racism, settler colonialism, heterosexism, etc.) (Nixon, 2019). There is no primary data collection with participants. Researchers will conduct a scoping review of the literature to find sources discussing the intersectionality and health professional education literature that identify “ableism” as one system of inequality, in addition to others. Expected outcomes include differences in perceived sense of belonging, retention, burnout, and well-being for students who hold multiple identities alongside their disability.

14Disability, Literature, Genre - Representation And Affect In Contemporary Fiction
Examining the intersection of disability and genre in popular works of horror, crime, science fiction, fantasy, and romance published since the late 1960s, Disability, Literature, Genre is a major contribution to both cultural disability studies and genre fiction studies. Drawing on recent work on affect and emotion, the book explores how disability makes us feel, and how those feelings shape interpersonal and fictional encounters. Written in a clear and accessible style, Disability, Literature, Genre offers a timely reflection on the rapidly growing body of scholarship on disability representation, as well as an innovative new theorisation of genre. By reconceptualising genre reading as an affective process, Ria Cheyne establishes genre fiction as a key site of investigation for disability studies. She argues that genre fiction’s unique combination of affectivity and reflexivity makes it ideally suited to the production of reflexive representations of disability: representations which encourage the reader to reflect upon what they understand about disability, and potentially to rethink it. Examining the affective—and effective—power of disability representations in a wide range of popular genre fiction, this book will be essential reading for academics in disability studies, literary studies, popular culture studies, and the medical humanities.

15Systematic Literature Review And Validity Evaluation Of The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) And The Multiple Sclerosis Functional Composite (MSFC) In Patients With Multiple Sclerosis.
By Meyer-Moock, Sandra, Feng, You-Shan, Maeurer, Mathias, Dippel, Franz-Werner and Kohlmann, Thomas
This article is from BMC Neurology , volume 14 . Abstract Background: There are a number of instruments that describe severity and progression of multiple sclerosis and they are increasingly used as endpoints to assess the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. We examined to what extent the psychometric properties of two accepted instruments – EDSS and MSFC – meet methodological standards and the value they have in clinical trials. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search in relevant databases [MEDLINE (PubMed), ISI Web of Science, EMBASE, PsycINFO & PSYNDEX, CINAHL] yielding 3,860 results. Relevant full-text publications were identified using abstract and then full-text reviews, and the literature was reviewed. Results: For evaluation of psychometric properties (validity, reliability, sensitivity of change) of EDSS and MSFC, 120 relevant full-text publications were identified, 54 of them assessed the EDSS, 26 the MSFC and 40 included both instruments. The EDSS has some documented weaknesses in reliability and sensitivity to change. The main limitations of the MSFC are learning effects and the z-scores method used to calculate the total score. However, the methodological criterion of validity applies sufficiently for both instruments. For use in clinical studies, we found the EDSS to be preferred as a primary and secondary outcome measure in recent studies (50 EDSS, 9 MSFC). Conclusions: Recognizing their strengths and weaknesses, both EDSS and MSFC are suitable to detect the effectiveness of clinical interventions and to monitor disease progression. Almost all publications identify the EDSS as the most widely used tool to measure disease outcomes in clinical trials. Despite some limitations, both instruments are accepted as endpoints and neither are discussed as surrogate parameters in identified publications. A great advantage of the EDSS is its international acceptance (e.g. by EMA) as a primary endpoint in clinical trials and its broad use in trials, enabling cross-study comparisons.

16Exploring Disability Narratives: The Interplay Of Mythology, Realism, And Representation In Literature And Media
Disability narratives serve as a bridge between myth and realism, offering a profound lens through which to examine human diversity and societal constructs. While mythological depictions often reduce disability to symbolic archetypes—representing moral flaws, divine punishment, or extraordinary wisdom—realist narratives ground disability in the lived experiences of individuals, highlighting systemic injustices and cultural biases. This evolution in representation dismantles stereotypes, portraying disabled individuals as complex, multifaceted members of society. Works like Dickens’ Bleak House or Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird challenge reductive tropes, fostering empathy and broader understanding. Disability narratives thus underscore the importance of inclusivity, revealing how race, class, and gender intersect with disability. By engaging with these stories, literature not only critiques societal norms but also champions equity and dignity. In doing so, disability narratives inspire a reevaluation of cultural values, enriching both literary discourse and social consciousness.

17Negotiating Disability Studies And Trauma Through Literature: A Critical Study Of The Graphic Novel Mai By Sriram Jagannat
By Debajyoti Biswas
The social construction of disability is an issue that needs to be analysed and examined in order to arrive at a proper understanding of the discipline. Disability studies from the beginning of its journey has undergone many changes of perspectives, from a medically determined categorisation to a social model of disability, thereby leading to a distinction between impairment and disability. In spite of these transitions, society still fails to possess a more sensitive attitude. Among different categories of reservation among government policies, we come across a category called “PWD” which means Persons with Disabilities. Although this categorisation is supposed to provide more opportunities to differently abled people but the nomenclature itself is derogatory. The objective of this paper is to analyse a Graphic novel Mai by Sriram Jagannath to find out how the issue of disability is received by the society and the efficacy of the graphic medium to bring about a change in perspective regarding people with disabilities.

(Additional Materials) Appended to the history are (1) History of GEAR UP and TRIO Programs; (2) Description of the External Expert Panel that decides which submissions are accepted into the clearinghouse; and (3) Procedures for evaluation of administrative and educational practices submissions to the clearinghouse. [The Education Opportunity Association (EOA) and the University of Minnesota sponsor the EOA National Best Practices Clearinghouse. This work was published by Colleagues of Color for Social Justice.]

1Lady's Life on a Farm in Manitoba
By Mary Georgiana Caroline Hall

In 1881, Mrs. Cecil Hall's brother went to Manitoba to farm. In 1882, she went out for a visit of some two months, and followed that visit with a long sojourn in Colorado, returning to England as the snows began to fall. While there, she had to give up her "Lady's ways" and help on the farm in many ways she'd never stoop to at home. She makes hay, cooks, paints the barn roof, and cleans. Through it all, the newness helped her keep her temper, and these letters home show an insight into the settlement of Western Canada. These letters have a feel of "Little House on the Prairie" from an English lady's point of view. (Summary by Sibella Denton).

2Kitchener's Mob Adventures of an American in the British Army
By James Norman Hall

“Pvt Ryan”, “Platoon”, “A Soldier’s Home”, Kitchener’s Mob”. These aren’t happy stories, they are about the experience of War. War at different times, and although modern warfare may be more sanitized, the adventure, the horror, the emotions don’t change. James Norman Hall has been there. He “Saw the Elephant”, and his portrayal of his WWI experience is a tribute to those ordinary people who do such extraordinary things.

Those who have served will identify with at least some part if not all of this book, be it the rigors of training, the camaraderie, or possibly those memories that try as you may, you can never make go away. Those who haven’t may gain insight and possibly more respect for those who have.

Tommy Atkins is a universal soldier, be he the cook that serves up a hot meal, the sniper that keeps score on the stock of his rifle, or the machine gunner who hates his job. As I narrated this book, I had to stop and compose myself more than once. I could almost feel Hall’s presence as we told Tommy’s story.

Mike Vendetti, Narrator
2 Lt Inf Vietnam 1965

3High Adventure A Narrative of Air Fighting in France
By James Norman Hall

High Adventure A Narrative of Air Fighting in France by James Norman Hall; you will find this book although an exciting narrative has an unpolished feel because it was published in June of 1918 while Mr. Hall was a captive in a German POW camp. When he was captured behind enemy lines, the book was still a work in progress. The Armistice would not be reached until November of that year.

Although he does not mention it in this book, Mr. Hall had already served the better part of 15 months with the British Expeditionary Forces, surviving the battle of Loos in Sept – Oct 1915, and upon which his excellent work “Kitchener’s” Mob is Based.

The US did not enter the war until April 1917, and Hall had already served nearly three years as an American with British and French forces, as a machine gunner with the British, and as a pilot in the Lafayette Escadrille.

Pilot training in the French Air Corps was primarily a matter of survival. Visualize if you will, a class of “Penguins”, aircraft with wings too short for flight scurrying about the airfield as student pilots learn to control these machines with no instructor on board, and for that matter in Mr. Halls case there was never an instructor on board. Their solo flight was their first flight. They learned by doing.

The sheer joy and wonder of man’s early experience of leaving the bounds of Earth in an aircraft coupled with the danger and excitement of air combat made “High Adventure” such a good read, I completed the narration ahead of schedule, because I couldn’t put it down

Mike Vendetti, Narrator

6Untroubled Mind
By Herbert J. Hall

A very wise physician has said that “every illness has two parts—what it is, and what the patient thinks about it.” What the patient thinks about it is often more important and more troublesome than the real disease. What the patient thinks of life, what life means to him is also of great importance and may be the bar that shuts out all real health and happiness. The following pages are devoted to certain ideals of life which I would like to give to my patients, the long-time patients who have especially fallen to my lot. 10Miss Ingalis
By Gertrude Hall
As the story begins, title character Grace Ingalis is a young woman with a middle-class socialite's upbringing who decides to marry a well-off young businessman she met mere weeks before on a winter sail to the West Indies. But intrigue is brewing as her married (and quite jealous) older sister Lydia is feeling left out, and a religious awakening awaits Grace. The story is reminiscent of Edith Wharton, who was a family friend, by way of Hall's art critic husband, Mr. Brownell. - Summary by BellonaTimes

13Love Affairs of the Courts of Europe
By Thornton Hall

The best stories are written by life itself, and that is why Thornton Hall has collected real life love stories in this volume. All the Princes Charming and the Fair Maidens of these stories are historical figures, which have at one time played their roles at one of the many Courts of Europe. Hall's writing style is entertaining and easy to follow, and though he may be guilty of embellishing the stories, the flourishes only add to their charm. - Summary by Carolin

14Untroubled Mind (Version 2)
By Herbert J. Hall

Our own minds cause us great pain through worry, fear and anxiety. We all know this, but how to stop the whirling, spinning wheel inside our heads? How to calm our racing thoughts and reach a truly untroubled mind? This medical doctor shares his wisdom about this gathered in years of practice and research. It is well worth listening to."When a man tells me he never worries, I am inclined to think that he is either deceiving himself or trying to deceive me. The great roots of worry are conscience, fear, and regret. Undoubtedly we ought to be conscientious and we ought to fear and regret evil. But if it is to be better than an impediment and a harm, our worry must be largely unconscious, and intuitive. The moment we become conscious of worry we are undone.... The remedy for the mental unrest, which is in itself an illness, lies not in an enlightened knowledge of the harmfulness and ineffectiveness of worry, not even in the acquirement of an unconscious conscience, but in the living of a life so full and good that worry cannot find place in it." - Summary by the author

The story follows the life of the Viking Harald from infancy to his crowning as King of Norway. It focuses on the Vikings' eagerness for adventure and new lands as they set forth from Norway and sail westward across the Atlantic, island-hopping on their way to America. The legends of these men were passed down through generations of families, while they sat around the fireside on bitterly cold winter nights playing harps and working with wool. This adventurous book will entertain young and old readers alike as they take a look at the lifestyle and world view of these mysterious people.

18Stanton White: A Romance of the New South
By Asa Zadel Hall
In this tome the Northern narrator, Harold Edson, visits the American South with his college friend, Stanton White, in order to study first hand the social conditions of African Americans during the post-reconstruction era. Edson describes encounters with racist whites whose attacks on African Americans are vicious and unrepentant.

This narrative reflects primitive ideas about race that prevailed in the 19th century United States--above and below the Mason-Dixon--and a level of ignorance that, to a 21st century listener, may be difficult to fully appreciate. But in fact, many of the notions Hall visits in the text continue to echo today reminding us that race has always been a foundation upon which this country was built. (Summary by James K. White)

21Letters from the West
By James Hall
James Hall was a soldier, lawyer, circuit judge, newspaper editor, historian, and author of fiction. He was also the first publisher of a literary magazine west of Pittsburgh. Hall originally wrote some of the letters in this collection in 1820, while voyaging by keelboat down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh to Shawneetown, Illinois, where he established a law practice. He appears to have revised the 1820 letters and added more prior to publication in London in 1828. Much more than a description of his travels, the letters include his observations on many subjects, reflecting current affairs and his broad interests. Topics include: Cumberland Road; Internal Improvements in 1820s; Harman Blennerhassett; Burr's Conspiracy; Manners of the People in Old Northwest; General Presby Neville; Cincinnati in 1820s; Arthur St. Clair; Falls of the Ohio; Shawneetown Illinois; Backwoodsmen; Daniel Boone; Harpe Brothers; Regulators; Popular superstitions Ohio River Valley. - Summary by Ted Lienhart

23Three Acres and Liberty
By Bolton Hall

It (this book) shows what is needed for a city man or woman to support a family on the proceeds of a little bit of land; it shows how in truth, as the old Book prophesied, the earth brings forth abundantly after its kind to satisfy the desire of every living thing. It is not necessary to bury oneself in the country, nor, with the new facilities of transportation, need we, unless we wish to, pay the extravagant rents and enormous cost of living in the city. A little bit of land near the town or the city can be rented or bought on easy terms; and merchandising will bring one to the city often enough. Neither is hard labor needed; but it is to work alone that the earth yields her increase, and if, although unskilled, we would succeed in gardening, we must attend constantly and intelligently to the home acres. - Summary by Bolton Hall
