The system which simplifies the device design consists of a digitizer card of Agilent U1066A DC438, a discriminator and a host computer. The anode analog pulses from two photomultiplier tubes are captured by the system, which adopts the sequence acquisition storage mode. By choosing proper threshold for each channel, coincidence time window of 30 ns, and comparing the pulse amplitudes from two channels, the portable scintillation counting device can be used to detect particles. For the unquenched standard 3H sample, the results show that the detection efficiency is (58.50.1)% and the background is (86.70.7) cpm. Meanwhile, 3H spectrum is obtained. The Nuclear Engineering Waste Disposal Site in Richland, Washington, is the only radioactive waste disposal facility that will accept liquid scintillation counting wastes (LSCW) for disposal. That site is scheduled to discontinue receiving LSCW by December of 1982. The objective of this document is to study alternative methods for the management of LSCW which constitutes 40% in volume of the institutional waste generated in the U.S. The LSCW total radioactivity content is estimated at 8 Ci/year. Although this amount of radioactivity is relatively small, LSCW must be treated as radioactive waste under existing regulations. Disposal problems are compounded and some options limited because of the chemical nature of the organic solvents, e.g., their flammability and chemical toxicity. The techniques that have been evaluated as alternative methods for the management of LSCW are: (1) evaporation, (2) distillation, (3) solidification, (4) conversion to a less hazardous chemical form, and (5) combustion (which includes incineration and addition to fuel). Presently, incineration appears to be the most viable alternative although some of the other methods seem promising but require further development. Also, the waste disposal is likely to be simplified by reduction of the volume generated at the source and segregation of the waste by radioactivity concentration.

Liquid scintillation counting technique is applied to the direct measurement of carbon-14 in carbon dioxide. This method has high counting efficiency and eliminates many of the basic problems encountered with previous techniques. The technique can be used to achieve a percent substitution reaction and is of interest as an analytical technique.

Soft betas, the internal conversion electrons, and unconverted gamma rays from lead-210 are efficiently detected in a liquid scintillation counting system with efficiency of 97 percent. The counter is interfaced with a multichannel pulse height analyzer. The spectra obtained is stored on paper tape and plotted on an x-y plotter.
