Considered here is the characterization of surface discharges which provide a facility complementary to that of artificially triggered lightning. General characteristics of a simplified surface discharge, including current waveforms and the constitution of a surface discharge are outlined, and the application of this approach to the study of aircraft lightning strikes is considered. Representations of leader-streamer and return-stroke phases are discussed, and the application to the two-dimensional discharge phase is covered. It is noted that the fact that the initiation times of surface discharges could be controlled, and the path followed by the discharge channels could be predetermined, indicates that it is possible to produce a highly dedicated high performance instrumentation system.

Two algorithms have been devised to increase the efficiency of processing of data in lightning detection and ranging (LDAR) systems so as to enable the accurate location of lightning strikes in real time. In LDAR, the location of a lightning strike is calculated by solving equations for the differences among the times of arrival (DTOAs) of the lightning signals at multiple antennas as functions of the locations of the antennas and the speed of light. The most difficult part of the problem is computing the DTOAs from digitized versions of the signals received by the various antennas. One way (a time-domain approach) to determine the DTOAs is to compute cross-correlations among variously differentially delayed replicas of the digitized signals and to select, as the DTOAs, those differential delays that yield the maximum correlations. Another way (a frequency-domain approach) to determine the DTOAs involves the computation of cross-correlations among Fourier transforms of variously differentially phased replicas of the digitized signals, along with utilization of the relationship among phase difference, time delay, and frequency.

Inputs consists of ground based field mill data, meteorological tower data, lightning location data and radiosonde and rapid changes in the field mill data, offset in time, provide the 'forecasts' or 'desired output values' used to train the neural network through back propagation. Examples of input data are shown and an example of data compression using a hidden layer in the neural network is discussed. (kr)

A software tool has been designed to quantify the lightning exposure at launch sites of the stack at the pads under different configurations. The relationship between thunderstorm dynamics and lightning strike locations, of both polarities, is examined on the Mesoscale Convective Complex that produced a mesocyclone and gust front on 27 May 1987. Two analysis techniques were used. The singularity analysis technique assumes local symmetry to calculate the strength of source/sink (or divergence/convergence) and rotating (or vorticity) singularities using Doppler radar wind data. A well defined gust front was located along with a mesocyclone that developed along the gust front. Both features were detected well in advance of corresponding surface reports. Background convergence was also calculated for low levels using the singularity method and was seen to be highly correlated with the number of negative cloud-to-ground lighting strikes. Upper level divergence was also seen in the form of a jet maximum in the Doppler velocities and also correlated favorably with total cloud-to-ground lightning strikes and low level background convergence. The singularity technique was also able to locate areas of aliased (or folded) velocities within the data set. The second analysis method was a fractal technique. It was found that the distribution of the lighting ground strikes is a fractal. The fractal was observed, however, for negative ground strikes only. A fractal dimension of negative ground strikes of D=1.21 was found within the main core of lightning activity for 30 minute increments. When the analysis was repeated for a five hour interval, the fractal dimension of negative ground strikes was D=1.7. This is the same fractal dimension that was measured for lighting channels using photographs. Very little fractal presence was found for positive ground strikes.

Operation Airhose- LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE in the same place within a week. This is the Same Air-hose-tess that i filmed in my 4 part series last week. A Lightning Protection System (LPS) was designed and built at Launch Complex 39B (LC39B), at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida in 2009. This LPS was instrumented with comprehensive meteorological and lightning data acquisition systems that were deployed from late 2010 until mid 2011. The first direct strikes to the LPS were recorded in March of 2011, when a limited number of sensors had been activated. The lightning instrumentation system detected a total of 70 nearby strokes and 19 direct strokes to the LPS, 2 of the 19 direct strokes to the LPS had two simultaneous ground attachment points (in both instances one channel terminated on the LPS and the other on the nearby ground). Additionally, there are more unaccounted nearby strokes seen on video records for which limited data was acquired either due to the distance of the stroke or the settings of the data acquisition system. Instrumentation deployment chronological milestones, a summary of lightning strikes (direct and nearby), high speed video frames, downconductor currents, and dH/dt and dE/dt typical waveforms for direct and nearby strokes are presented.

The bomber has occupied the center of Air Force doctrine since the advent of airpower redefined power projection. In 1926 the US Army s Training Regulation no. 440-15, Fundamental Principles for the Employment of the Air Service, stated that airpower should be used offensively, primarily to secure the control of the air, and, secondarily, to disrupt and delay enemy communications and ground establishments. 1 The primary function became known as air superiority. Even during the early days of aviation, the importance of aerial bombardment in establishing air superiority became readily apparent. As the bomber s attributes of range, payload, and precision matured over a number of major conflicts, the establishment of air superiority over enemy territory together with the efficiencies associated with this process developed as well. Today, high-technology capabilities make an adversary s air defenses difficult to defeat. Although the bomber s attributes have decreased the amount of time needed to attain air superiority, they are no longer sufficient to overcome modern defenses. The heavy bomber s ability to strike critical command and control (C2) nodes, severely damage enemy airfields, and degrade air defenses with great precision early in a conflict can still give the United States a distinct and overwhelming advantage. However, if we wish to maintain a capable bomber force as well as remain competitive in a contested environment, both modernization and acceleration of the speed of offensive operations must become a strategic and operational imperative. Unfortunately, air superiority historically has been more closely associated with the fighter force while bombers have played their crucial role in relative obscurity since the end of World War II. In a high-technology conflict, the rapid attainment of air superiority will prove essential.

Contrary to popular misconception, lightning often strikes the same place twice. Certain conditions are just ripe for a bolt of electricity to come zapping down; and a lightning strike is powerful enough to do a lot of damage wherever it hits. NASA created the Accurate Location of Lightning Strikes technology to determine the ground strike point of lightning and prevent electrical damage in the immediate vicinity of the Space Shuttle launch pads at Kennedy Space Center. The area surrounding the launch pads is enmeshed in a network of electrical wires and components, and electronic equipment is highly susceptible to lightning strike damage. The accurate knowledge of the striking point is important so that crews can determine which equipment or system needs to be retested following a strike. Accurate to within a few yards, this technology can locate a lightning strike in the perimeter of the launch pad. As an added bonus, the engineers, then knowing where the lightning struck, can adjust the variables that may be attracting the lightning, to create a zone that will be less susceptible to future strikes.

Lightning Strikes Again by Dokken

Two direct lightning strikes to a NOAA WC-130 aircraft equipped with eleven electromagnetic field sensors were recorded in South Florida during the summer of 1981. In both cases, the aircraft was flying in precipitation at an altitude of about 4 km and a few kilometers away from active thunderstorm regions. An analysis of the data shows that both strikes exhibit a train of discrete pulses which can be correlated in most of the eleven sensors. The flashes lasted 295 and 460 msec and were characterized by an initial active period of about 40 msec with a pulse repetition rate of ten pulses per millisecond. In both flashes the most of the current flow was along the fuselage with peak currents estimated at 3 KA in one flash and 600 A in the other flash. A continuing current of an estimated 50 A was evident in only one strike. The electric field sensors recorded a maximum change of 200,000 V/M. In one flash the leader appears to propagate from the cloud to the aircraft with a duration of 350 microsecond which implies a distance of about 175 m to the cloud charge center.

Grid-integrated photovoltaic (PV) systems are currently undergoing explosive growth in Malaysia. However, as more PV systems are installed close to transmission lines, there are concerns about the impact of electromagnetic (EM) properties affecting the performance and operation of the PV systems if they are exposed to lightning strikes, particularly indirect ones. Therefore, this study aims to model the impact of indirect lightning strikes on PV systems installed in proximity to transmission lines. The model involves developing a 3D model of the PV system together with a sample transmission line and creating an artificial lightning event to study the EM activity within the area. The results are compared to the IEC 61000 standard to determine its level of r\hazard. From the simulation results, it was found that the current intensity, H, of the disturbance, can reach up to 63% more than the standard limit stipulated in the standards. The significance of the study ensures that PV systems installed within the vicinity of power lines or substations have adequate lightning protection systems as well as proper earthing systems.

On April 29, 1996, lightning struck the airfield at Hurlburt Field, FL, killing one Airmen and injuring ten others. This cloud to ground lightning strike hit eight minutes after a lightning advisory was canceled. At the time of the strike, thunderstorms were observed 7 to 10 miles north and south of the airfield. The incident raised questions about Air Force Weather Agency's lightning criteria. Soon after the incident, a Lightning Safety Review Panel was assembled to determine the adequacy of lightning advisories. One of the questions posed to the panel was could an incident like Hurlburt happen again? The review panel could not answer that question due to the lack of documented research on how far lightning can travel horizontally before striking the ground. This thesis used the WSR-88D Algorithm Testing and Display System (WATADS) and the default parameters of the WATADS's Storm Cell Identification and Tracking (SCIT) Algorithm to identify thunderstorm centroids. Lightning strike data containing nearly 50,000 cloud to ground strikes was obtained through the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). Horizontal distances were then computed between these storm centroids and cloud to ground lightning strikes. This research discovered that average distances between thunderstorm centroids and lightning strikes vary with season and location. In addition, nearly 75% of all lightning strikes occurred within 10 nautical miles of thunderstorm centroids.
