In this article author examines the nature of the legitimacy of power, correlates the concepts of “legitimacy” and “legality”. The present research project aims to analyze the relationship among political cynicism, political legitimacy, and political legitimation in Peruvian citizens residing in Metropolitan Lima. Peru’s contemporary political context—marked by widespread distrust in political institutions and persistent instability—has severely weakened the country’s democracy. Based on this scenario, the general objective of the study is to examine the relationship between political cynicism, political legitimacy, and political legitimation. Complementarily, the study seeks to: (1) identify whether political cynicism, political legitimacy and political legitimation influence citizens’ political orientation, and (2) assess whether political conservatism predicts political cynicism, political legitimacy and political legitimation. A positive correlation is expected between political cynicism and political legitimation, and a negative correlation between political legitimacy with both political legitimation and political cynicism. This study seeks to provide evidence on the psychosocial processes that shape citizens’ trust, support for democracy, and the legitimacy of institutions in Peru, particularly in light of the upcoming elections and the incorporation of new young voters.
