8On Planetary Torque Signals And Sub-decadal Frequencies In The Discharges Of Large Rivers

We explore the arguments presented in the past linking changes in the angular momentum $modulus$, $|{\bf L}|$, of the Sun's barycentric orbit, with the discharges of Po River in Europe and Paran\'a River in South America, looking for any evidence regarding to a possible underlying physical mechanism. We clarify the planetary effect on solar torque presenting new analyses and results; we also improve prior results on Paran\'a River's cycles finding significant spectral lines around 6.5 yr, 7.6 yr, 8.7 yr, and 10.4 yr. We show that the truly important dynamical parameter in this issue is the {\it vectorial} planetary torque. Moreover, following the variations of ${\bf L}$ respect to the Sun's spin axis of rotation (i.e., a LS relationship), we found virtually the same Paran\'a River discharge peaks: 6.3 yr, 7.7 yr, 8.6 yr and 9.9 yr. An analisys based on Magnitude Squared Coherence and Wavelet Coherence between Paran\'a River discharge and our LS relationship shows significant, although intermittently, coherence near 8-yr periodicities. Wavelet Coherence also shows big and significant regions of coherence inside 12-19 yr band. Our results ruled out classical tidal effects in this problem; but suggest that, if these rivers are trully related to solar barycentric motion, the physical origin of this connection might be related to a working solar spin-orbit interaction.

Abstract Interior Least Terns (Sternula antillarum) (ILT) are colonial, fish-eating birds that breed within active channels of large sand bed rivers of the Great Plains and in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Multipurpose dams, irrigation structures, and engineered navigation systems have been present on these rivers for many decades. Despite severe alteration of channels and flow regimes, regulation era floods have remained effective at maintaining bare sandbar nesting habitat on many river segments and ILT populations have been stable or expanding since they were listed as endangered in 1985. We used ILT breeding colony locations from 2002 to 2012 and dispersal information to identify 16 populations and 48 subpopulations. More than 90% of ILT and >83% of river km with suitable nesting habitat occur within the two largest populations. However, replicate populations remain throughout the entire historical, geophysical, and ecological range of ILT. Rapid colonization of anthropogenic habitats in areas that were not historically occupied suggests metapopulation dynamics. The highest likelihood of demographic connectivity among ILT populations occurs across the Southern Plains and the Lower Mississippi River, which may be demographically connected with Least Tern populations on the Gulf Coast. Paired ecological and bird population models are needed to test whether previously articulated threats limit ILT population growth and to determine if management intervention is necessary and where. Given current knowledge, the largest sources of model uncertainty will be: (1) uncertainty in relationships between high flow events and subsequent sandbar characteristics and (2) uncertainty regarding the frequency of dispersal among population subunits. We recommend research strategies to reduce these uncertainties.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of five different collecting gears in sampling larval fishes associated with dikes and revetments. The tests were conducted on the Lower Mississippi River at mile 508.8 and miles 447-448. The five collecting gears used were: Plankton nets fished at discrete depths in the water column of a dike pool and the main channel; a push sled; a diaphragm pump; an electroshocker; and basket implants. These gears were used during the day and night to describe diel and temporal changes in the larval fish community in main channel, dike pool, dike, revetment, and sandbar habitats. The discrete depth net gear was effective in documenting the vertical, diel, and temporal distribution of ichthyoplankton drift in the main channel and dike pool habitats. Similarities and differences in ichthyoplankton abundance and diversity occurred between habitats. The most notable observation was the comparable abundance among like depth strata between habitats in May. In June, the surface stratum at each habitat contained a far greater abundance of larvae than the samples collected at lower depths. The push sled was effective for sampling shallow water in the vicinity of sandbars. Use of the sled revealed diel and temporal differences in the shallow-water ichthyoplankton.
