Episode 20: "Irons in the Fire". The theme of 'iron' gave us a chance to review three very different films which ended in a clear Gold, Silver and Bronze result... actually Bronze may be a bit too generous for one film this week, which deserved a medal made of Bismuth. However, on a more positive note, one film does score a rare and much sought after Sunshine Rating of 10/10! We start the reviews with the latest installment of comic book action in 'Iron Man 3' (14m10s). This weeks classic film choice is often overlooked, 'The Iron Giant' (32m53s), an animated tale with an interesting line up of voice actors. Our final review is new to DVD 'The Man With the Iron Fists' (39m47s) starring Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu. The theme to this weeks 'Take 5' film quiz (25m35s) is 'films with chemical elements in the title'. Education and school years impact leadership development, but this development has still been little studied. This study contributes Finnish female leaders' narratives to the discussion. The purpose was to analyze how female leaders describe their school years and themselves as learners and how these elements have shaped their careers. The following questions were set for this research: (1) How do female leaders describe the significance of school in the light of their career development? and (2) How did female leaders experience school going and their school years? This was a qualitative study employing a narrative approach and in which ten female leaders were interviewed. Women's activity and social relationships appeared the most important factors in their study paths when considered from the perspective of leadership development. Based on the findings, the role and meaning of school experiences in becoming a leader were discussed.

1Lady's Life on a Farm in Manitoba

In 1881, Mrs. Cecil Hall's brother went to Manitoba to farm. In 1882, she went out for a visit of some two months, and followed that visit with a long sojourn in Colorado, returning to England as the snows began to fall. While there, she had to give up her "Lady's ways" and help on the farm in many ways she'd never stoop to at home. She makes hay, cooks, paints the barn roof, and cleans. Through it all, the newness helped her keep her temper, and these letters home show an insight into the settlement of Western Canada. These letters have a feel of "Little House on the Prairie" from an English lady's point of view. (Summary by Sibella Denton).

High Adventure A Narrative of Air Fighting in France by James Norman Hall; you will find this book although an exciting narrative has an unpolished feel because it was published in June of 1918 while Mr. Hall was a captive in a German POW camp. When he was captured behind enemy lines, the book was still a work in progress. The Armistice would not be reached until November of that year.<br /><br />Although he does not mention it in this book, Mr. Hall had already served the better part of 15 months with the British Expeditionary Forces, surviving the battle of Loos in Sept – Oct 1915, and upon which his excellent work “Kitchener’s” Mob is Based.<br /><br />The US did not enter the war until April 1917, and Hall had already served nearly three years as an American with British and French forces, as a machine gunner with the British, and as a pilot in the Lafayette Escadrille.<br /><br />Pilot training in the French Air Corps was primarily a matter of survival. Visualize if you will, a class of “Penguins”, aircraft with wings too short for flight scurrying about the airfield as student pilots learn to control these machines with no instructor on board, and for that matter in Mr. Halls case there was never an instructor on board. Their solo flight was their first flight. They learned by doing.<br /><br />The sheer joy and wonder of man’s early experience of leaving the bounds of Earth in an aircraft coupled with the danger and excitement of air combat made “High Adventure” such a good read, I completed the narration ahead of schedule, because I couldn’t put it down<br /><br />Mike Vendetti, Narrator

Henry Martyn (1781-1812), a brilliant and ambitious young student in Cambridge, England, was led by God to be a missionary to India and Persia.
