This report surveys the field of diagnosis and introduces some of the key algorithms and heuristics currently in use. Fault diagnosis is an important and a rapidly growing discipline. This is important in the design of self-repairable computers because the present diagnosis resolution of its fault-tolerant computer is limited to a functional unit or processor. Better resolution is necessary before failed units can become partially reuseable. The approach that holds the greatest promise is that of resident microdiagnostics; however, that presupposes a microprogrammable architecture for the computer being self-diagnosed. The presentation is tutorial and contains examples. An extensive bibliography of some 220 entries is included.

Abstract: This tutorial teaches dynamic multithreaded algorithms using a Cilk-like [11, 8, 10] model. The material was taught in the MIT undergraduate class 6.046 Introduction to Algorithms as two 80-minute lectures. The style of the lecture notes follows that of the textbook by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein [7], but the pseudocode from that textbook has been �Cilki�ed� to allow it to describe multithreaded algorithms. The �rst lecture teaches the basics behind multithreading, including de�ning the measures of work and critical-path length. It culminates in the greedy scheduling theorem due to Graham and Brent [9, 6]. The second lecture shows how parallel applications, including matrix multiplication and sorting, can be analyzed using divide-and-conquer recurrences.

Some books on algorithms are rigorous but incomplete; others cover masses of material but lack rigor.  Introduction to Algorithms  uniquely combines rigor and comprehensiveness. The book covers a broad range of algorithms in depth, yet makes their design and analysis accessible to all levels of readers. Each chapter is relatively self-contained and can be used as a unit of study. The algorithms are described in English and in a pseudocode designed to be readable by anyone who has done a little programming. The explanations have been kept elementary without sacrificing depth of coverage or mathematical rigor. The first edition became a widely used text in universities worldwide as well as the standard reference for professionals. The second edition featured new chapters on the role of algorithms, probabilistic analysis and randomized algorithms, and linear programming. The third edition has been revised and updated throughout. It includes two completely new chapters, on van Emde Boas trees and multithreaded algorithms, substantial additions to the chapter on recurrence (now called "Divide-and-Conquer"), and an appendix on matrices. In these lectures, given in '96 summer schools in Beg-Rohu (France) and Budapest, I discuss the fundamental principles of thermodynamic and dynamic Monte Carlo methods in a simple light-weight fashion. The keywords are MARKOV CHAINS, SAMPLING, DETAILED BALANCE, A PRIORI PROBABILITIES, REJECTIONS, ERGODICITY, "FASTER THAN THE CLOCK ALGORITHMS". The emphasis is on ORIENTATION, which is difficult to obtain (all the mathematics being simple). A firm sense of orientation helps to avoid getting lost, especially if you want to leave safe trodden-out paths established by common usage. Even though I remain quite basic (and, I hope, readable), I make every effort to drive home the essential messages, which are easily explained: the crystal-clearness of detail balance, the main problem with Markov chains, the great algorithmic freedom, both in thermodynamic and dynamic Monte Carlo, and the fundamental differences between the two problems.

MM (majorization--minimization) algorithms are an increasingly popular tool for solving optimization problems in machine learning and statistical estimation. This article introduces the MM algorithm framework in general and via three popular example applications: Gaussian mixture regressions, multinomial logistic regressions, and support vector machines. Specific algorithms for the three examples are derived and numerical demonstrations are presented. Theoretical and practical aspects of MM algorithm design are discussed.

In this introductory review, we focus on applications of quantum computation to problems of interest in physics and chemistry. We describe quantum simulation algorithms that have been developed for electronic-structure problems, thermal-state preparation, simulation of time dynamics, adiabatic quantum simulation, and density functional theory.
