This study examines how gender and sexual stereotypes influence the perception of intimate partner violence (IPV) in lesbian versus heterosexual relationships. While prior research shows that IPV is perceived as more severe and the perpetrator as more responsible when the aggressor is a man (e.g., Hine et al., 2020; Seelau et al., 2003; Taylor & Sorenson, 2005), these findings stem largely from heterosexual samples. Yet lesbian and bisexual women face comparable, and sometimes higher, rates of IPV (Brown & Herman, 2015; Lie & Gentlewarrier, 1991 ; Messinger, 2011 ; Walters et al., 2013), but their experiences remain underexplored in psychological research (Lee & Crawford, 2007). Drawing from both empirical literature and qualitative data from a recent study of 3 focus group study (n = 18), this project explores the possibility that lesbian relationships are affected by a "myth of non-violence" : a stereotype suggesting that women, particularly when in relationships with other women, are less likely to be violent or abusive. Focus group participants acknowledged the existence of IPV in lesbian relationships, yet highlighted a lack of spaces to discuss it, limited conceptual frameworks, limited access to resources, and additional barriers stemming from political hostility and anti-LGBTI sentiments. The purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to examine whether gender stereotypes and beliefs in a so-called "lesbian utopia" reduce the perceived severity and responsibility in lesbian IPV scenarios; and (2) to assess how these perceptions differ across types of violence (psychological, physical, and sexual). By focusing on lesbian participants, this study provides a critical replication of existing work while centering a population largely absent from most IPV research. Expected outcomes include better understanding of perceptual biases in IPV judgments and identification and pratical insights for improving awareness campaigns and support resources.

This study carried out a scoping review on gaslighting in intimate relationships, with the aim of analyzing how the scientific literature has studied the phenomenon. In recent years, discussions about psychological violence have grown significantly (Keatley et al., 2021; Martínez-González et al., 2021; Capezza et al., 2021). One specific type of this discreet abuse that has stood out among others and attracted a lot of attention is gaslighting. The term gaslighting has become increasingly popular and is widely used to describe abusive manipulation strategies in different interpersonal relationships (e.g., family, romantic, work), with the aim of making the victim doubt their ability to judge (Gass & Nichols, 1988; Klein et al., 2023; Sweet, 2019).

In this study, longitudinal self-report data were collected on love, sexuality, and well-being of young adults (18-28 years) in romantic relationships. These data will be used for (1) scientific research (hypotheses not yet drafted), (2) education (e.g., student theses), and (3) dissemination and impact activities (not yet specified). This study is part of a larger mixed-methods research project conducted in the Netherlands, “Lovely sex or sexy love” (Van de Bongardt, 2018; start date: January 2018, end date: March 2023), that is aimed at investigating the interrelatedness of romantic relationship characteristics, sexuality, and individual well-being of young adult heterosexual romantic couples. During this research project, participants (58 partners from 29 young adult romantic couples) are followed for approximately two years, during which various types of data are collected (i.e., semi-structured interviews, longitudinal questionnaires, daily diary data, conversation video-observations), to investigate how positive and negative experiences with love and sex are intertwined, and linked with the individual partners’ general wellbeing. The Medical Ethical Testing Committee of the Erasmus MC (University Medical Center Rotterdam) confirmed that the Medical Research Involving Human Subjects Act (WMO) did not apply to the interview study of “Lovely sex or sexy love” (reference number MEC-2018-096), and that this study was therefore exempt from formal medical-ethical approval under Dutch law. The full research protocol of “Lovely sex or sexy love” was evaluated and approved by the Ethics Review Committee of the Department of Psychology, Education, and Child Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam (reference number #19-009).

The value and importance of human intimacy is examined as a complex combination of passion, commitment, friendship, and love. Models of healthy and unhealthy conflict in relationships are offered as well as suggestions for moving from unhealthy expressions of conflict to healthy ones.

This bibliography presents annotations of 28 selected items (mostly journal articles) which deal with conflict communication in intimate relationships. It updates a similar bibliography on conflict management and resolution in close personal relationships published in 1986. (SR)

The purpose of the study is to examine the impact of couples’ cannabis use and other substance use on their momentary relationship satisfaction as well as how couples’ use patterns vary based on their relationship satisfaction. This study will capture momentary patterns of cannabis-only and cannabis and alcohol co-use among couples and assess whether state-level and baseline reports of relationship satisfaction vary based on the type of substance(s) used. This study also seeks to differentiate between substance use concordant couples versus discordant couples. Spouses or partners in committed relationships tend to be concordant in substance use, and prior literature investigating alcohol use and couple functioning has linked discordant drinking (where one partner drinks alcohol and the other does not) with negative relationship outcomes such as marital dissolution and found higher marital satisfaction among concordant couples. However, little is known about the effect of concordant or discordant cannabis use within couples.

The purpose of this project is to investigate perceptions of and attributions for partners’ social control attempts within intimate relationships. Given that intimate relationships are closely tied to one’s physical and psychological health and individuals within relationships do exert considerable influence on one another’s health behaviors, it is imperative to advance our understanding of social control within intimate relationships. Thus, this project aims to test whether the nature of attributions for social control affect health behavior changes differently, and whether these effects are moderated by trying to change a health-compromising versus health-enhancing behavior, using a fully-crossed between-subjects experimental design. By utilizing both experimental and longitudinal designs, these two studies hope to explain the mechanisms of social control processes in intimate relationships and investigate whether social control facilitates long-term health behavior changes.

This present research aims to further examine the association between interpersonal trauma and relationship distress. Previous literature has identified intrusive, negative thinking as the cause of perceiving conflicts as negative amongst couples which stem from heavy, sharp concentration from the individual onto their partner (Massa et. al, 2017). Opposing this idea, more recent research identified that interpersonal trauma is not a prominent factor in determining relationship satisfaction for trauma-exposed college students. Instead, those trauma-exposed individuals who have higher satisfaction in their relationships report having their stress levels reduced and feel stimulated to engage in health behaviors (Smith et. al, 2021). However, both theories neglect to account for what makes an intimate relationship healthy and successful. Using a moderation analysis, we conducted a Qualtrics survey for undergraduate college students that will display questionnaires regarding their previous trauma exposure, relationship distress, and our three moderators, trust, intimacy, and communication. Our findings indicate that the three moderators in question followed the premises of the hypothesis and provided a buffer to trauma and relationship distress. Participants who scored higher in levels of trust, communication, and intimacy also scored lower in trauma and relationship distress than those who had low scores of the three moderators. Further research should look to identify further moderators that may increase relationship quality for people suffering from symptoms of trauma.

This study explored some of the impacts of the presence of others on the most intimate human relationships: those of couples and parents and children in communal households. The shift from essentially dyadic to larger group relations in the home adds a number of complex phenomena: audiences, alternative resources, coalition partners, interventions, and political jockeying. In each kind of relationship the primary tie may remain central for many people while they balance availability and responsibility to the others. There are both greater opportunities for wider intimacy, more ties, sharing of chores and responsibilities, autonomy, and egalitarianism and a series of new issues with which couples, parents, and children must cope. Emotion of being moved (aka kama muta) is associated with an increase in pro-social tendencies, a heightened motivation to strengthen relationships, and acts of sharing with others. Individuals experiencing this emotion actively seek ways to re-experience this pleasant and warm state and actively strive to evoke similar feelings in their close ones. The research outlined in this preregistration will investigate the influence of experimentally induced emotion of being moved on the immediate perception of relationship satisfaction, closeness, and intimacy through recalling emotionally touching memories.

Emotion of being moved (aka kama muta) is associated with an increase in pro-social tendencies, a heightened motivation to strengthen relationships, and acts of sharing with others. Individuals experiencing this emotion actively seek ways to re-experience this pleasant and warm state and actively strive to evoke similar feelings in their close ones. The research outlined in this preregistration will investigate the influence of experimentally induced emotion of being moved on the immediate perception of relationship satisfaction, closeness, and intimacy through viewing emotionally touching video clips.

This social constructivist/constructionist research explores changes in female therapists' intimate relationships after they began working with survivors of female sexual violence. Discourse analysis found that working with survivors shifted participants' initially naive understanding of female sexual violence, as they developed a critical political consciousness of sexual violence in the process. Transformative learning theory is used to describe this process. As participants' new consciousness developed, aspects of cognitive, emotional, and behavioural intimacy within their intimate relationships were affected. To better prepare therapists for working with survivors of female sexual violence, greater attention to counselling-training curricula is recommended. (Contains 1 table.)

In motivation psychology, the distinction between approach and avoidance goals is considered fundamental (e.g., Elliot & Thrash, 2002). According to the hierarchical model of approach and avoidance, dispositional motives lead to distinct goals, which in turn have specific consequences that are assumed to be primarily positive for approach but primarily negative for avoidance goals (Elliot et al., 2006). Until now, approach and avoidance goals have been measured as relatively stable interindividual differences rooted in psychophysiological systems (goals as traits). However, in the sense of self-regulation (Carver & Scheier, 1982), goals are also understood as adjustable to a given situation (goals as states). We are interested in how affective, cognitive, and behavioral variables influence goal states in the context of romantic relationships. Additionally, we want to investigate how goal states in turn affect affective, cognitive, and behavioral variables. Moreover, we want to understand why some people show more variability in these variables than others and the consequences of variability.

A scoping review of peer-reviewed literature on online self-defeating behaviours and attitudes within intimate relationships.

Yampolsky et al (2022)’s qualitative study establishing intimate racism from one’s romantic partner showed that BIPOC in intercultural relationships have experienced racism from their partner and that these experiences were related to negative emotions, self-evaluations and relationship experiences as well as identity stress and conflict. Due to the qualitative nature of this study, the causal effect of intimate racism from one’s romantic partner could not be demonstrated. Using an experimental priming design, the present study seeks to determine the causal of intimate racism from a partner in an interracial relationship to BIPOC participants’ well-being as measured by the participants’ emotional state. We also explore the link between primed intimate racism (mindset primes), relationship quality and cultural identification. We also explore the role of moderated by prior experience with intimate racism, racial worldview and participant rejection sensitivity. We expect that intimate racism primes will negatively impact the emotional state of BIPOC participants in interracial couples compared to the cultural difference or control conditions. We do not necessarily expect that the primes would impact BIPOC participants’ reported relationship quality or couple and cultural identity integration in their current relationship given that it is difficult to shift one’s perception of existing connections with a priming study.

We also explore the link between primed intimate racism (mindset primes), relationship quality and cultural identification. We also explore the role of moderated by prior experience with intimate racism, racial worldview and participant rejection sensitivity. We expect that intimate racism primes will negatively impact the emotional state of BIPOC participants in interracial couples compared to the cultural difference or control conditions. We do not necessarily expect that the primes would impact BIPOC participants’ reported relationship quality or couple and cultural identity integration in their current relationship given that it is difficult to shift one’s perception of existing connections with a priming study.

Yampolsky et al (2022)’s qualitative study establishing intimate racism from one’s romantic partner showed that BIPOC in intercultural relationships have experienced racism from their partner and that these experiences were related to negative emotions, self-evaluations and relationship experiences as well as identity stress and conflict. Due to the qualitative nature of this study, the causal effect of intimate racism from one’s romantic partner could not be demonstrated. Using an experimental priming design, the present study seeks to determine the causal of intimate racism from a partner in an interracial relationship to BIPOC participants’ well-being as measured by the participants’ emotional state. It identifies similarities in men's experiences and backgrounds, including in their perceptions of their own victimisation. Marianne Inez Lien and Jørgen Lorentzen argue that the traditional gender power model should be modified and supplemented, and propose that we consider violence in terms of psychological supremacy, rather than in terms of femininity and masculinity.
