We give two recursions for computing top intersections of tautological classes on blowups of moduli spaces of genus-one curves. One of these recursions is analogous to the well-known string equation. As shown in previous papers, these numbers are useful for computing genus-one enumerative invariants of projective spaces and Gromov-Witten invariants of complete intersections.

In this paper we consider the Arnold conjecture on the Lagrangian intersections of some closed Lagrangian submanifold of a closed symplectic manifold with its image of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism. We prove that if the Hofer's symplectic energy of the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism is less than a topology number defined by the Lagrangian submanifold, then the Arnold conjecture is true in the degenerated (non-transversal) case.

In the paper "Isoperimetry of waists and local versus global asymptotic convex geometries", it was proved that the existence of nicely bounded sections of two symmetric convex bodies K and L implies that the intersection of randomly rotated K and L is nicely bounded. In this appendix, we achieve a polynomial bound on the diameter of that intersection (in the ratio of the dimensions of the sections).

We define an intersection product of tropical cycles on matroid varieties (via cutting out the diagonal) and show that it is well-behaved. In particular, this enables us to intersect cycles on moduli spaces of tropical rational marked curves $M_{0,n}$ and $M_{0,n}(\R^r, d)$. This intersection product can be extended to smooth varieties (whose local models are matroid varieties). We also study pull-backs of cycles and rational equivalence.

Let $k$ be an arbitrary field, the purpose of this work is to provide families of positive integers $\mathcal{A} = \{d_1,\ldots,d_n\}$ such that either the toric ideal $I_{\mathcal A}$ of the affine monomial curve $\mathcal C = \{(t^{d_1},\ldots,\,t^{d_n}) \ | \ t \in k\} \subset \mathbb{A}_k^n$ or the toric ideal $I_{\mathcal A^{\star}}$ of its projective closure ${\mathcal C^{\star}} \subset \mathbb{P}_k^n$ is a complete intersection. More precisely, we characterize the complete intersection property for $I_{\mathcal A}$ and for $I_{\mathcal A^{\star}}$ when: (a) $\mathcal{A}$ is a generalized arithmetic sequence, (b) $\mathcal{A} \setminus \{d_n\}$ is a generalized arithmetic sequence and $d_n \in \mathbb{Z}^+$, (c) $\mathcal{A}$ consists of certain terms of the $(p,q)$-Fibonacci sequence, and (d) $\mathcal{A}$ consists of certain terms of the $(p,q)$-Lucas sequence. The results in this paper arise as consequences of those in Bermejo et al. [J. Symb. Comput. 42 (2007)], Bermejo and Garc\'{\i}a-Marco [J. Symb. Comput. (2014), to appear] and some new results regarding the toric ideal of the curve.

It is proven that any structure of a fibre space into varieties of Kodaira dimension zero on a generic Fano complete intersection of index one and dimension $M$ in ${\mathbb P}^{M+k}$ for $M\geq 2k+1$ is a pencil of hyperplane sections. We also describe $K$-trivial structures on varieties with a pencil of Fano complete intersections.

This article tries to answer the question: How far can the algebro-geometric theory of rational descendant Gromov-Witten invariants be carried over to the tropical world? Given the fact that our moduli spaces are non-compact, the answer is surprisingly positive: We discuss universal families and the string, divisor and dilaton equations, we prove a splitting lemma describing the intersection with a "boundary" divisor and we give two criteria that suffice to prove the tropical version of a particular WDVV or topological recursion equation. Discussing these criteria in the case of curves in R^1 or R^2, we prove, for example, that for the toric varieties P^1, P^2, P^1 \times P^1, F_1, Bl_2(P^2), Bl_3(P^2) and with Psi-conditions only in combination with point conditions, the tropical and conventional descendant Gromov-Witten invariants coincide. In particular, we can unify and simplify the proofs of the previous tropical enumerative results.

We consider shifts of a set $A\subseteq\mathbb{N}$ by elements from another set $B\subseteq\mathbb{N}$, and prove intersection properties according to the relative asymptotic size of $A$ and $B$. In his preprint ``Differential-Geometric Characterizations of Complete Intersections'' (alg-geom/9407002), J.M.Landsberg introduces an elementary characterization of complete intersections. The proof of this criterion uses the method of moving frames. The aim of this note is to present an elementary proof of Landsberg's criterion that is valid over any ground field.

It is shown that the Dirac fermion structures created in the middle of the Landau bands in the vortex-lattice state of a pure 2D strongly type-II superconductor at half-integer filling factors can be effectively controlled by the external magnetic field. The resulting field-induced modulation of the magneto-oscillations is shown to arise from Fermi-surface resonance scattering in the vortex core regions. Possible observation of the predicted effect in a quasi 2D organic superconductor is discussed.

The goal of this paper is to explore the genus and degree of the Fano scheme of linear subspaces on a complete intersection in a complex projective space. Firstly, suppose that the expected dimension of the Fano scheme is one, we prove a genus-degree formula. Secondly, we give a degree formula for the Fano scheme.

Interaction between vehicles and pedestrians is seen in many areas such as crosswalks and intersections. In this paper, we study a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process with a bottleneck at a boundary caused by an interaction. Due to the time-dependent effect originating from the speed of pedestrians, the flow of the model varies even if the average hopping probability at the last site is the same. We analyze the phenomenon by using two types of approximations: (2+1)-cluster approximation and isolated rarefaction wave approximation. The approximate results capture intriguing features of the model. Moreover, we discuss the situation where vehicles turn right at the intersection by adding a traffic light at the boundary condition. The result suggests that pedestrian scrambles are valid to eliminate traffic congestion in the right turn lane.

We construct intersections of S-branes with waves and Kaluza-Klein monopoles. There are several possible ways to add a monopole to an S-brane solution similar to p-branes. On the other hand, one may add a wave only to the transverse space of an S-brane unlike a p-brane where wave resides on its worldvolume. The metric function of the wave is a harmonic function of the remaining transverse directions and an extra condition on integration constants is needed. We also show that it is not possible to add an S-brane to p-brane intersections whose near horizon geometry has an AdS part.

We determine the simplicial compleses $\Delta$ whose Stanley-Reisner ideals $I_\Delta$ have the following property: for all $n\geq 1$ the powers $I_\Delta^n$ have linear resolutions and finite length local cohomologies.

We construct a minimal projective bimodule resolution for every finite dimensional quantum complete intersection of codimension two. Then we use this resolution to compute both the Hochschild cohomology and homology for such an algebra. In particular, we show that the cohomology vanishes in high degrees, while the homology is always nonzero.

Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. We apply a theorem of C. Han to give an explicit description for the weak Lefschetz property of the monomial Artinian complete intersection A = K[X,Y,Z]/(X^d,Y^d,Z^d) in terms of d and p. This answers a question of J. Migliore, R. M. Miro-Roig and U. Nagel and, equivalently, characterizes for which characteristics the rank-2 syzygy bundle Syz(X^d,Y^d,Z^d) on PP^2 satisfies the Grauert-Muelich theorem. As a corollary we obtain that for p=2 the algebra A has the weak Lefschetz property if and only if d=(2^t+1)/3 or d=(2^t-1)/3 for some positive integer t. This was recently conjectured by J. Li and F. Zanello.

Intersections constitute one of the most dangerous elements in road systems. Traffic signals remain the most common way to control traffic at high-volume intersections and offer many opportunities to apply intelligent transportation systems to make traffic more efficient and safe. This paper describes an automated method to estimate the temporal exposure of road users crossing the conflict zone to lateral collision with road users originating from a different approach. This component is part of a larger system relying on video sensors to provide queue lengths and spatial occupancy that are used for real time traffic control and monitoring. The method is evaluated on data collected during a real world experiment.

Let $p_1,p_2,p_3$ be three distinct points in the plane, and, for $i=1,2,3$, let $\mathcal C_i$ be a family of $n$ unit circles that pass through $p_i$. We address a conjecture made by Sz\'ekely, and show that the number of points incident to a circle of each family is $O(n^{11/6})$, improving an earlier bound for this problem due to Elekes, Simonovits, and Szab\'o [Combin. Probab. Comput., 2009]. The problem is a special instance of a more general problem studied by Elekes and Szab\'o [Combinatorica, 2012] (and by Elekes and R\'onyai [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 2000]).

Based on the fact that projective monomial curves in the plane are complete intersections, we give an effective inductive method for creating infinitely many monomial curves in the projective $n$-space that are set theoretic complete intersections. We illustrate our main result by giving different infinite families of examples. Our proof is constructive and provides one binomial and $(n-2)$ polynomial explicit equations for the hypersurfaces cutting out the curve in question.

Chiral cosmic strings are naturally produced at the end of D-term inflation and they may have interesting cosmological consequences. As was first proved by Carter and Peter, the equations of motion for chiral cosmic strings in Minkowski space are integrable (just as for Nambu-Goto strings). Their solutions are labeled by a function $k(\sigma - t)$ where $t$ is time and $\sigma$ is the invariant length along the string, and the constraints on $k$, which determines the charge on the string, are that $0 \leq k^2 \leq 1$. We review the origin of this parameter and also discuss some general properties of such strings which can be deduced from the equations of motion. The metric around infinite chiral strings is then constructed in the weak field limit, and studied as a function of $k$. We also consider the angular momentum of circular chiral loops, and extend previous work to consider the evolution and self-intersection properties of a more general family of chiral cosmic string loops for which $k^2(\sigma-t)$ is not constant.

The problem on the minimal number (with respect to deformation) of intersection points of two closed curves on a surface is solved. Following the Nielsen approach, we define classes of intersection points and essential classes of intersection points, which "are preserved under deformation" and whose total number is called the Nielsen number. If each Nielsen class consists of a unique point and has a non-vanishing index after a suitable deformation of the pair of curves, one says that {\it the Wecken property holds}. We compute the minimal number of intersection points in terms of the Nielsen numbers and the Reidemeister numbers. In particular, we prove that the Wecken property does not hold for some pairs of closed curves. Moreover, all the non-vanishing indices of the Nielsen classes equal $\pm1$, while the non-vanishing Jezierski semi-indices equal 1. Similar questions are studied for the self-intersection problem of a curve on a surface.

In this short note, we study the semi-simplicity of the quantum cohomology algebra H(V, C) of a Fano complete intersection V, and show that the subspace of H(V, C) generated by the hyperplane sections is semi-simple in the sense of Dubrovin when the degree of V satisfies certain conditions.

We prove the following conjecture of Furstenberg (1969): if $A,B\subset [0,1]$ are closed and invariant under $\times p \mod 1$ and $\times q \mod 1$, respectively, and if $\log p/\log q\notin \mathbb{Q}$, then for all real numbers $u$ and $v$, $$\dim_{\rm H}(uA+v)\cap B\le \max\{0,\dim_{\rm H}A+\dim_{\rm H}B-1\}.$$ We obtain this result as a consequence of our study on the intersections of incommensurable self-similar sets on $\mathbb{R}$. Our methods also allow us to give upper bounds for dimensions of arbitrary slices of planar self-similar sets satisfying SSC and certain natural irreducible conditions.

The description of the intersections of components of a Springer fiber is a very complex problem. Up to now only two cases have been described completely. The complete picture for the hook case has been obtained by N. Spaltenstein and J.A. Vargas, and for two-row case by F.Y.C. Fung. They have shown in particular that the intersection of a pair of components of a Springer fiber is either irreducible or empty. In both cases all the components are non-singular and the irreducibility of the intersections is strongly related to the non-singularity. As it has been shown in [8] a bijection between orbital varieties and components of the corresponding Springer fiber in GL_n extends to a bijection between the irreducible components of the intersections of orbital varieties and the irreducible components of the intersections of components of Springer fiber preserving their codimensions. Here we use this bijection to compute the intersections of the irreducible components of Springer fibers for two-column case. In this case the components are in general singular. As we show the intersection of two components is non-empty. The main result of the paper is a necessary and sufficient condition for the intersection of two components of the Springer fiber to be irreducible in two-column case. The condition is purely combinatorial. As an application of this characterization, we give first examples of pairs of componentswith a reducible intersection having components of different dimensions.

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication is a crucial component of the future autonomous driving systems since it enables improved awareness of the surrounding environment, even without extensive processing of sensory information. However, V2V communication is prone to failures and delays, so a distributed fault-tolerant approach is required for safe and efficient transportation. In this paper, we focus on the intersection crossing (IC) problem with autonomous vehicles that cooperate via V2V communications, and propose a novel distributed IC algorithm that can handle an unknown number of communication failures. Our analysis shows that both safety and liveness requirements are satisfied in all realistic situations. We also found, based on a real data set, that the crossing delay is only slightly increased even in the presence of highly correlated failures.

We present a construction of noncommutative double mirrors to complete intersections in toric varieties. This construction unifies existing sporadic examples and explains the underlying combinatorial and physical reasons for their existence.

Summary: Traffic light coordination is a complex problem. In this paper, we extend previous work on an abstract model of city traffic to allow for multiple street intersections. We test a self-organizing method in our model, showing that it is close to theoretical optima and superior to a traditional method of traffic light coordination. Abstract: The elementary cellular automaton following rule 184 can mimic particles flowing in one direction at a constant speed. This automaton can therefore model highway traffic. In a recent paper, we have incorporated intersections regulated by traffic lights to this model using exclusively elementary cellular automata. In such a paper, however, we only explored a rectangular grid. We now extend our model to more complex scenarios employing an hexagonal grid. This extension shows first that our model can readily incorporate multiple-way intersections and hence simulate complex scenarios. In addition, the current extension allows us to study and evaluate the behavior of two different kinds of traffic light controller for a grid of six-way streets allowing for either two or three street intersections: a traffic light that tries to adapt to the amount of traffic (which results in self-organizing traffic lights) and a system of synchronized traffic lights with coordinated rigid periods (sometimes called the "green wave" method). We observe a tradeoff between system capacity and topological complexity. The green wave method is unable to cope with the complexity of a higher-capacity scenario, while the self-organizing method is scalable, adapting to the complexity of a scenario and exploiting its maximum capacity. Additionally, in this paper we propose a benchmark, independent of methods and models, to measure the performance of a traffic light controller comparing it against a theoretical optimum.

Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety with trivial Chow groups. (By trivial, we mean that the cycle class is injective.) We show (assuming the Lefschetz standard conjecture) that if the vanishing cohomology of a general complete intersection $Y$ of ample hypersurfaces in $X$ has geometric coniveau $\geq c$, then the Chow groups of cycles of dimension $\leq c-1$ of $Y$ are trivial. The generalized Bloch conjecture for $Y$ is this statement with "geometric coniveau" replaced by "Hodge coniveau".

Could three global issues -- climate change, water scarcity, and pandemics -- be posed as national security challenges with interconnected threats to the global commons? And, if so, could this perspective help trigger new approaches for addressing them? For the United States, impacts on national security are important but mostly indirect, resulting from the ripple effects of direct impacts on other countries and regions, especially poor ones. This paper explores the interconnections of these issues and discusses a range of policy ideas: not to recommend them as solutions, but to stimulate an alternative way of thinking about policy -- one that might be characterized as indirect, not direct; bottom-up, not top down; and opening new possibilities, not fixing the problem.
