The evolution in network and communication technology has led to the need to interconnect individual computer networks. Network designers are faced with the heterogeneity of networks just as they were previously faced with the heterogeneity of computers within a single network. Many issues must be considered in interconnecting various types of networks. This thesis identifies some of these issues as they pertain to the interconnection of two IEEE standards for Local Area Networks, Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) and Token ring. It further discusses a major concern regarding bridging a simplified version of the CSMA/CD and Token Ring protocol using a system of communicating machines. The model employs a combination of finite state machines and variables in the specification of each machine. Communication between machines is accomplished through shared variables. The thesis concludes by summarizing the issues related to the bridging two Local Area Networks, CSMA/CD and Token Ring, using a system of communicating machines. One aspect of this research is to critique ATM as a future networking technology for DoD and the U.S. Navy. To implement multicast and MBone over the Monterey BayNet without using dedicated multicast servers, we enabled Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) protocol on already-installed Frame-Relay-capable routers. By implementing multicast over Monterey BayNet, we show that the current MBone software provides the same performance that it provides on regular Internet connections even on low-speed (128Kbps) Frame Relay network connections and low-cost personal computers. In order to control the scope of the regional multicast and to safely integrate regional Frame Relay multicast with the global MBone, we used administratively controlled multicast group addresses (224.0.1.20) in addition to the use of time-to-live (TTL) control mechanism. This eliminates global duplication of multicast packet delivery. Public-domain multicast monitoring tools are used to monitor the multicast connectivity through internetworks. Since these tools are available only to UNIX-based platforms, they cannot be used by the regional sites that mostly have windows and Macintosh platforms. We developed Web-accessible multicast monitoring pages in order to meet the multicast monitoring needs of the regional sites. Participating sites are now able to monitor regional multicast connectivity by accessing these pages, which permits remote problem diagnosis. That was previously impossible. Finally we synopsize firewall requirements for secure and effective use of multicast.

Previous research has shown that it is possible to use the Internet's Multicast Backbone (MBone) and associated audio/video software for the purpose of Distance Learning. As more education is performed online, the need arises to be able to view the content at the user's convenience. Through experimental testing, this thesis investigates the usefulness and feasibility of applying networked recording and storage of digitized audio and video, all via the MBone for distance learning. Large, distributed organizations such as the Naval Service can economically benefit from use of the MBone and its associated tools. To date, Navy and Marine Corps projects using video teleconferencing have not exploited the vast possibilities provided by the Internet and the MBone. This thesis takes distance learning one step farther and combines MBone audio/video with the new recording tool called the Multicast Backbone Video Conference Recorder (MBone VCR). This enables distance learning as a viable replacement to on-site training. It is technically feasible and economically supportable to record the digital media that results from an MBone session used for a distance learning program. That stored information can then be used repeatedly and easily updated to support changing curricula and information. Problems and network accessible solutions are demonstrated in this case study on use of the MBone VCR as a usable remote educational tool.

Internetworking protocols such as IP currently do not allow 'mobile hosts' to interoperate easily or conveniently with other hosts on the network. A host's IP address encodes the network number to which the host is connected, which prevents IP datagrams from reaching the host when it moves to a new location and connects to the Internet within a different network. This paper presents a new protocol for allowing mobile hosts to transparently interoperate in the Internet using IP. The protocol is designed to make use of existing facilities of the IP protocol architecture where possible, in order to minimize any changes necessary to existing protocol software. The protocol takes advantage of the standard IP loose source routing option for routing datagrams correctly to mobile hosts, while allowing the hosts to retain their normal 'home' IP address even when connected to a foreign network. The protocol is simple and scales well to large numbers of mobile hosts. It requires fewer changes to existing software and adds less overhead to the network than previous IP mobile host internetworking protocols.

While deployed at sea, sailors are traditionally provided much of their education at sea through correspondence and pace courses. But with recent developments in the Internet and videoconferencing, it is now feasible to deliver real time educational material anywhere, even to a ship at sea. This thesis investigates the current status of networked desktop videoconferencing technology, and its use in support of Joint Vision 2010, with respect to Distance Learning. It provides an analysis of videoconferencing protocols, standards, and applications, as well as a videoconferencing pilot project. The objective of the analysis is to determine the viability and economical benefits of using videoconferencing technology and collaboration tools, from the desktop, as a means for simultaneously delivering synchronous and asynchronous distance learm%g material from an academic location to multiple students at remote locations. The results show that desktop videoconferencing technology, via IP based networks in the Defense Information Infrastructure, is a viable tool that can add numerous economical benefits, such as a decreased spending for travel and eliminating the need to rely on large, room-based systems.

Yet, increased information requirements only begin to describe the current issue. An elusive enemy and multiple theatres of conflict have increased the operational distances between front-line units and command structures increasing the demand for satellite communications. However, deployed forces currently depend on multiple satellite systems which may not always support interoperability, connectivity, and net-centricity required for enemy engagement. This thesis begins with discussion of several current efforts attempting to address this issue as well as several enabling technologies and concepts. Key capabilities extracted from these efforts form the basis for the initial evaluation of the proposed architecture supported by the software modeling tool same here OpNet. For operational applicability, recent Marine Corps operations, concepts, and lessons learned provide basis for further evaluation. In order for the U.S. military to adjust to asymmetrical warfare and fight a Global War on Terror, military leaders have had to dramatically increase the quantity and quality of information flowing across the communications networks which has strained limited network resources. Yet, increased information requirements only begin to describe the current issue. An elusive enemy and multiple theatres of conflict have increased the operational distances between front-line units and command structures increasing the demand for satellite communications. However, deployed forces currently depend on multiple satellite systems which may not always support interoperability, connectivity, and net-centricity required for enemy engagement. This thesis begins with discussion of several current efforts attempting to address this issue as well as several enabling technologies and concepts. Key capabilities extracted from these efforts form the basis for the initial evaluation of the proposed architecture supported by the software modeling tool same here OpNet. For operational applicability, recent Marine Corps operations, concepts, and lessons learned provide basis for further evaluation. Findings support internetworking in space capabilities and a recommended modification of current architectural strategies and policies.

The backbone of the internetworking technology widely used by the military, as well as many civilian installations, is commonly referred to as TCP/IP. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP) are the two standard communication protocols from which TCP/IP receives its name. By utilizing TCP/IP, the majority of technical issues of interconnecting various computer technologies have become transparent to the user. This thesis conducts an in depth study of many aspects of the TCP/IP technology. Based upon descriptions provided, flowcharts detailing the series of procedures of numerous functions of both TCP and IP are created. Additionally, inefficient TCP/IP functions are discussed and possible solutions to the inefficiencies are provided.
