In this thesis, an interactive computer program for the analysis and design of time invariant unity feedback linear control systems is presented, using cascade or feedback or both types of compensation. By using this program, the user is freed from the tedious, time consuming and error prone method of hand calculations, letting the computer handle these tasks efficiently and speedily. The user can then concentrate fully on the placement of poles and zeroes of the compensator(s) used. Design of control systems by classical methods being essentially a repetitive, trial and error procedure, this program greatly cuts down the turn around time and leads to faster, more satisfactory results. The feasibility is determined of using small computer systems (including programmable desktop calculators and minicomputers) for interactive electronic circuit simulation. Several aspects of the simulator architecture are considered: the computer language, the data word format, the computing speed, and the computer memory configuration. Interactive circuit simulation on programmable desktop calculators is investigated using simulator program BIAS-D (BASIC), written in BASIC for HP9830A desktop calculator. Analysis techniques are presented which conserve memory and advantage of the idiosyncrasies of these small computers. Interactive-mode circuit simulation and batch-mode simulation on minicomputers are compared relative to the simulator architecture and required simulation speed. The more significant speed- and memory-dependent algorithms, used in circuit simulators are compared in detail. Also compared are the execution speeds of several different minicomputer systems, including the HP2100, the PDP 11/45, and the PRIME 400. The speed and memory requirements of these minicomputers executing BIAS-D are compared to an IBM 370/168 also executing BIAS-D. A new method for computing small-signal frequency response is introduced. Because complex arithmetic is not required, this technique is particularly suited to minicomputer simulators and requires minimal additional memory when implemented in a circuit simulator with a transient analysis capability. The frequency response of both linear and nonlinear circuits can be modeled, as can that of high-Q circuits. Magnitude and phase errors of less than 1 percent and 0.5 degrees, respectively, are easily attainable.

A discussion of the key features of an interactive map display system that affect both the usefulness of the system and the design and architecture of its hardware and software. Recent developments in computer graphics offer the possibility of creating interactive map display systems having many of the advantages of traditional paper maps, but significant additional advantages as well. This report presents observations and guidelines for developers of interactive map systems. The techniques and design principles discussed are applicable to command and control systems ranging from support of a field commander through systems tailored to the needs of the National Command Authority.

Noting that the merging of various types of media with the computer has presented the field of education with a hybrid technology called interactive multimedia (also referred to as hypermedia), this digest begins by defining this technology as "the integration of text, audio, graphics, still image, and moving pictures into a single, computer-controlled, multimedia product" (McCarthy, 1989). The four major components of an interactive multimedia system--i.e., the data system, the software, the hardware, and the communications system--are described, and advantages and disadvantages associated with hypermedia are examined. Examples of hypermedia applications and programs are also given. The digest concludes with a look to the future of hypermedia and the numerous design issues that need to be resolved. INTERACTIVE COMPUTER GRAPHICS can reduce the time and cost of any design process by at least one-third. To realize this great reduction, interactive computer graphics programs will have to be developed at every design level. SEARCH is an automated architectural criteria maintenance and design evaluation system. SEARCH is used in two phases of Corps design work. CORPS, the Conversationally Oriented Real-Time Program-Generating System, provides computational support for engineering planners, designers, and managers who require a responsive computer resource, but do not choose to be computer programmers. This paper gives (1) guidelines for programs incorporated in CORPS, (2) the run sequence for using CORPS, (3) an example problem showing the use of one program, (4) a list of the programs presently in CORPS at WES, (5) a list of the programs being added to the CORPS library, and (6) excerpts from an article by Robert L. Renner outlining an early conception of CORPS.

A computer program for a PDP-15 is presented which calculates, to first order, the characteristics of charged-particle beam as it is transported through a sequence of focusing and bending magnets. The maximum dimensions of the beam envelope normal to the transport system axis are continuously plotted on an oscilloscope as a function of distance along the axis. Provision is made to iterate the calculation by changing the types of magnets, their positions, and their field strengths. The program is especially useful for transport system design studies because of the ease and rapidity of altering parameters from panel switches. A typical calculation for a system with eight elements is completed in less than 10 seconds. An IBM 7094 version containing more-detailed printed output but no oscilloscope display is also presented.

This document is a set of guidelines to aid a programmer in making the various decisions necessary for a clear user-programmer dialogue. Its goal is to promote an effective and efficient transfer of information between programmer and user. These guidelines are divided into four sections: (1) Format, (2) Sequence, (3) Audience, and (4) Aim. Format, in terms of this study, means the spatial and structural presentation of information. Sequence deals with the procedural aspects of multiple panel displays. This section looks at the issues of timelines of presentation, modularization of information, and patterns of user behavior. Audience looks at the relationship among programmer, user, and message. It covers the issues of analyzing the audience's knowledge, attitudes, and needs, anticipating the audience's inferences, and identifying textual ambiguities. The programmer's aim or intention shows up in everything from tone to format. Aim considers the programmer's purpose.

The purpose of this thesis effort is to continue the work of improving and adding to the iterative graphics control package called ICECAP (Interactive Control Engineering Computer Analysis Package). The main emphasis will be on providing a graphical way of entering the desired system's characteristics into ICECAP versus entering the desired system's open-looped transfer function through the keyboard. This will allow, for example the control engineer the ability to graphically place the desired system's poles and zeros through the use of the cursor control keys of the keyboard. In addition, the option of displaying the locus solution, for the entered OLTF, will be available to the user, with the added capability to add and delete new poles and zeros without deleting the previous computed locus solution. In control engineering, one of the engineer's goals is to control a system. A system is an interconnection of components forming a system configuration which will provide a desired system response (5). The system to be controlled for example may be chemical, electrical, or mechanical. But in order to accurately determine the resulting output of a control system, it requires that the control engineer model this system in the most accurate way possible. Keywords: systems analysis.

DACSAP is user friendly; it uses menus for option selection and prompted data entry. The program will analyze systems which are described by transfer functions written in the s, z, w or w' domains. The program will manipulate the transfer functions of multi-loop systems to produce the open and closed loop systems to produce the open and closed loop transfer functions required for a variety of analysis techniques. The analysis techniques included in DACSAP are root locus, open and closed loop Bode frequency response, Nyquist frequency response, Nicols frequency response and closed loop time response. The output of any of these analysis techniques may be either a tabulation of data points or a high resolution plot. This project consists of the development of a software application for the user-guided design of a robotic system in conjunction with a computer-automated optimization system (Fig. 1). In Year 1 (Feb, 2011 - Feb 2012) we demonstrated an initial system for allowing a human user to configure a robot, its environment and to specify a task. In addition, we also demonstrated a paradigm for allowing a human-user to guide an automated optimization / machine learning system to collaborate in solving a problem. In Year 2 (Feb 2012 - Feb 2013) we integrated these two parts into a prototype desktop application and concluded the year with testing the effectiveness of this approach. In year 3 we extended our system so that it can support the crowd-sourcing of robotics by non-expert users: multiple users collectively influence an optimization method (Fig. 2). This final report is organized as follows. Section 2 is an overview of this project and summarizes its goals. Section 3 describes the successful crowdsourcing of robotics: we have shown that, when two non-experts interact with our robotics system, robot controllers are developed more rapidly compared to two users acting independently, or one user working alone. The main new deliverables are the submission of two manuscripts that documents the design, deployment and results from crowdsourcing robotics. Work described in the first manuscript was summarized in the previous QPR. Worked described in the second manuscript are summarized in this Report.

This thesis reports on an effort to design and implement a modern interactive computer-aided design and analysis package for control systems. This package applies to discrete and continuous time systems. The thesis effort continues the effort begun by Captain Glen T. Logan who used a control engineering design and analysis computer program called TOTAL as his starting point. This thesis project uses top-down structured analysis and programming techniques to define the new program called ICECAP (Interactive Control Engineering Computer Analysis Package). A user-oriented command language forms the basic structure. of ICECAP. On-line assistance is provided to the user. The program makes use of CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) terminals with a limited graphics capability to improve the user environment. The program structure allows features to be added in a modular fashion so that others can continue the effort. Emphasis was placed on implementing the continuous time functions first. (Author)

Our research effort has produced nine publications in peer-reviewed journals listed at the end of this report. The work reported here are in the following areas: (1) genetic network modeling; (2) autocatalytic model of pre-biotic evolution; (3) theoretical and computational studies of strongly correlated electron systems; (4) reducing thermal oscillations in atomic force microscope; (5) transcription termination mechanism in prokaryotic cells; and (6) the low glutamine usage in thennophiles obtained by studying completely sequenced genomes. We discuss the main accomplishments of these publications.
