Infinite Jest is a film that uses entertainment to illustrate humanity’s dependency on various forms of pleasure and the unending search for everlasting happiness. filmmaker's notes: Infinite Jest has been widely considered an ‘unfilmable’ novel; therefore, once again, I didn’t film anything! The process of creating this movie involved using various ‘entertainment’ that was extracted and structured similarly to the book with its intertwining narrative complexity and strong thematic unity. Many of the events of the film take place during the timeframe of the book, but also many years afterward, and even within our actual reality of the book itself existing only as fiction. This fluid portrait of Infinite Jest can be interpreted in any way the viewer sees fit, as the adaptation itself allows examination of its own process the same way we think of how DFW formulating Infinite Jest is as much a part of the experience as the content within. Whether this experiment succeeds or fails is all subjective; all I ask is that, beyond superficial enjoyment, there be an analysis of the choices that were made in achieving this film. Is entertainment only successful when it meets or exceeds our expectations? Does it always mirror our own personal quest for unattainable happiness? Does it give us pleasure because it distracts us from life’s truth? Does the immediacy and simplicity of basic gratification capture more of the essence of actuality than we can rationalize? Maybe it’s not that easy, but maybe it is! TL;DR - Here’s Infinite Jest as an indie dramedy. Don’t take it too seriously. Have fun watching and stay entertained!—MBD
