5Quantum Correlations Expressed As Information And Entropic Inequalities For Composite And Noncomposite Systems

For noncomposite systems in classical and quantum domains, we obtain new inequalities such as the subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for Shannon entropies and information determined by the probability distributions and for von Neumann entropies of quantum states determined by the density operators. We extend the relations of Shannon and Tsallis entropies to the entropies of conditional probability distributions known for composite systems to the case of noncomposite systems. We give a review of the approach to construct the tomographic-probability distributions for qudit systems and present the entropic and information inequalities for spin tomograms, as well as the subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for tomograms of the both noncomposite and composite system states.

12Infinite Family Of Second-law-like Inequalities

The probability distribution function for an out of equilibrium system may sometimes be approximated by a physically motivated "trial" distribution. A particularly interesting case is when a driven system (e.g., active matter) is approximated by a thermodynamic one. We show here that every set of trial distributions yields an inequality playing the role of a generalization of the second law. The better the approximation is, the more constraining the inequality becomes: this suggests a criterion for its accuracy, as well as an optimization procedure that may be implemented numerically and even experimentally. The fluctuation relation behind this inequality, -a natural and practical extension of the Hatano-Sasa theorem-, does not rely on the a priori knowledge of the stationary probability distribution.

13Matroid Prophet Inequalities

By

Consider a gambler who observes a sequence of independent, non-negative random numbers and is allowed to stop the sequence at any time, claiming a reward equal to the most recent observation. The famous prophet inequality of Krengel, Sucheston, and Garling asserts that a gambler who knows the distribution of each random variable can achieve at least half as much reward, in expectation, as a "prophet" who knows the sampled values of each random variable and can choose the largest one. We generalize this result to the setting in which the gambler and the prophet are allowed to make more than one selection, subject to a matroid constraint. We show that the gambler can still achieve at least half as much reward as the prophet; this result is the best possible, since it is known that the ratio cannot be improved even in the original prophet inequality, which corresponds to the special case of rank-one matroids. Generalizing the result still further, we show that under an intersection of p matroid constraints, the prophet's reward exceeds the gambler's by a factor of at most O(p), and this factor is also tight. Beyond their interest as theorems about pure online algorithms or optimal stopping rules, these results also have applications to mechanism design. Our results imply improved bounds on the ability of sequential posted-price mechanisms to approximate Bayesian optimal mechanisms in both single-parameter and multi-parameter settings. In particular, our results imply the first efficiently computable constant-factor approximations to the Bayesian optimal revenue in certain multi-parameter settings.

15Asymptotic Inequalities For Positive Crank And Rank Moments

Andrews, Chan, and Kim recently introduced a modified definition of crank and rank moments for integer partitions that allows the study of both even and odd moments. In this paper, we prove the asymptotic behavior of these moments in all cases, and our main result states that while the two families of moment functions are asymptotically equal, the crank moments are always asymptotically larger than the rank moments. Andrews, Chan, and Kim primarily focused on one case, and proved the stronger result that the first crank moment is strictly larger than the first rank moment for all partitions by showing that the difference is equal to a combinatorial statistic on partitions that they named the ospt-function. Our main results therefore also give the asymptotic behavior of the ospt-function, and we further determine its behavior modulo 2 by relating its parity to Andrews spt-function.

In this paper, the existence of limit cycles for a class of nonlinear systems is explored. Based on the time-domain approach with differential and integral inequalities, the phenomenon of the stable limit cycle can be accurately verified for such nonlinear systems. Furthermore, the exponentially stable limit cycles, frequency of oscillation, and guaranteed convergence rate can be correctly calculated. Measurement scenarios containing events with relations of exclusivity represented by pentagons, heptagons, nonagons, etc., or their complements are the only ones in which quantum probabilities cannot be described classically. Interestingly, quantum theory predicts that the maximum values for any of these graphs cannot be achieved in Bell inequality scenarios. With the exception of the pentagon, this prediction remained experimentally unexplored. Here we test the quantum maxima for the heptagon and the complement of the heptagon using three- and five-dimensional quantum states, respectively. In both cases, we adopt two different encodings: linear transverse momentum and orbital angular momentum of single photons. Our results exclude maximally noncontextual hidden-variable theories and are in good agreement with the maxima predicted by quantum theory.

25ERIC ED306951: Inequalities In Classroom Computer Software.

Biases based on gender and ethnicity in computer software available to schools were investigated in this study. A random sample of 15 software programs were selected and evaluated on the bases of gender and ethnicity. Data were gathered on the number of male and female characters portrayed and on the cross-cultural dimensions of the software in order to determine if it would appeal to a cross section of children from varying backgrounds, or whether it had been prepared with a particular audience in mind, e.g., Anglo-Saxon males. The data showed that, from a quantitative perspective, patterns of gender and ethnic imbalance previously documented in textbooks are also present in current educational software available to students. Of the 1,942 characters noted in the graphics and text of the evaluated software, 63% were males and only 3% of the characters could be identified as ethnic. In order to clearly understand the dimensions of these biases, a quantitative examination of the roles and activities found within the software was undertaken. Similar ethnicity and gender trends were found, with males dominating the character roles (63%) while observable ethnic characters were limited to only 3%. When these roles and activities were divided into separate categories, males were portrayed in more categories, and as more active characters, including adventure, military, and science and technology roles, while females were limited to 41 more passive roles. Ethnic roles were also limited, but ethnic female roles were even more limited than ethnic males roles. (5 tables, a list of the 15 evaluated software packages, and 6 references) (EW)

This paper describes a new method for finding nontrivial solutions of the inequality Ax or = 0, where A is an mxn matrix of rank n. The method is based on the observation that a certain function f has a unique minimum if and only if the inequality fails to have a nontrivial solution. Moreover, if there is a solution, the direction of divergence of an attempt to minimize f will converge to a solution. The technique can also be used to solve inhomogeneous inequalities and hence linear programming problems, although no claims are made about competitiveness with existing methods.

27Multiple Vector Valued Inequalities Via The Helicoidal Method

We develop a new method of proving vector-valued estimates in harmonic analysis, which we like to call "the helicoidal method". As a consequence of it, we are able to give affirmative answers to some questions that have been circulating for some time. In particular, we show that the tensor product $BHT \otimes \Pi$ between the bilinear Hilbert transform $BHT$ and a paraproduct $\Pi$ satisfies the same $L^p$ estimates as the $BHT$ itself, solving completely a problem introduced in a paper of Muscalu, Pipher, Tao and Thiele. Then, we prove that for "locally $L^2$ exponents" the corresponding vector valued $\overrightarrow{BHT}$ satisfies (again) the same $L^p$ estimates as the $BHT$ itself. Before the present work there was not even a single example of such exponents. Finally, we prove a bi-parameter Leibniz rule in mixed norm $L^p$ spaces, answering a question of Kenig in nonlinear dispersive PDE.

In this paper, we deal with the solutions of systems of PDEs with bilateral inter-connected obstacles of min-max and max-min types. These systems arise naturally in stochastic switching zero-sum game problems. We show that when the switching costs of one side are regular, the solutions of the min-max and max-min systems coincide. Then, this common viscosity solution is related to a multi-dimensional doubly reflected BSDE with bilateral interconnected obstacles. Finally, its relationship with the the values of a zero-sum switching game is studied.

30Stability Of Linear Switching Systems And Markov-Bernstein Inequalities For Exponents

We analyse the problem of stability of a continuous time linear switching system (LSS) versus the stability of its Euler discretization. It is well-known that the existence of a positive {\tau} for which the corresponding discrete time system with step size {\tau} is stable implies the stability of LSS. Our main goal is to obtain a converse statement, that is, to estimate the discretization step size {\tau} > 0 up to a given accuracy {\epsilon} > 0. This leads to a method of deciding the stability of continuous time LSS with a guaranteed accuracy. As the first step, we solve this problem for matrices with real spectrum and conjecture that our method stays valid for the general case. Our approach is based on Markov-Bernstein type inequalities for systems of exponents. We obtain universal estimates for sharp constants in those inequalities. Our work provides the first estimate of the computational cost of the stability problem for continuous-time LSS (though restricted to the real-spectrum case).

We study the extent of independence needed to approximate the product of bounded random variables in expectation, a natural question that has applications in pseudorandomness and min-wise independent hashing. For random variables whose absolute value is bounded by $1$, we give an error bound of the form $\sigma^{\Omega(k)}$ where $k$ is the amount of independence and $\sigma^2$ is the total variance of the sum. Previously known bounds only applied in more restricted settings, and were quanitively weaker. We use this to give a simpler and more modular analysis of a construction of min-wise independent hash functions and pseudorandom generators for combinatorial rectangles due to Gopalan et al., which also slightly improves their seed-length. Our proof relies on a new analytic inequality for the elementary symmetric polynomials $S_k(x)$ for $x \in \mathbb{R}^n$ which we believe to be of independent interest. We show that if $|S_k(x)|,|S_{k+1}(x)|$ are small relative to $|S_{k-1}(x)|$ for some $k>0$ then $|S_\ell(x)|$ is also small for all $\ell > k$. From these, we derive tail bounds for the elementary symmetric polynomials when the inputs are only $k$-wise independent.

Inequal. Pure Appl. Math.} 10, Article 21, 2009" and "{\it J. Nonlinear Sci. Appl.} 4:2:130-137, 2011". Moreover, we present a new proof of the inequality $a^{ra}+b^{rb}\ge a^{rb}+b^{ra}$ for all positive real numbers $a$ and $b$ and $r\in [0,e]$. In addition, three new conjectures are presented.

On January 17, 2008, the Japanese Central Education Council submitted a newly revised set of official curriculum guidelines to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Japan. These guidelines for elementary schools will become effective in the 2011 academic year and include a controversial new policy: the introduction of mandatory "foreign language activities" at all public elementary schools. Japanese fifth and sixth graders will receive about one period (approximately forty-five minutes) per week of mandatory English education called "foreign language activities." Prior to implementation, these guidelines were vigorously debated by supporters and opponents of the policy. However, they have now been made official and every public and private school in Japan is required to follow them. This article identifies supporters and opponents of the policy and summarizes their arguments in order to demonstrate that neither side has ever discussed the policy in terms of the opportunity gap that exists between different segments of the Japanese population. Considering that the existence of an opportunity gap is a major issue in educational policy debates in the United States, the author argues that a similar opportunity gap exists in Japan, but that it tends to be ignored in policy debates. Next, he shows that the gap is manifested in differential access among sectors of the population to shadow education and to private schools. Finally, he evaluates the new policy in terms of narrowing this opportunity gap between students with access to shadow education and private school lessons and those without them.

We consider the cardinal invariant $bd$ defined by M. D\v{z}amonja and I. Juh\'asz concerning bidiscrete systems. Using the relation between bidiscrete systems and irredundance for a compact Hausdorff space $K$, we prove that ${w(K)\leq bd(K)\cdot hL(K)^+}$, generalizing a result of S. Todorcevic concerning the irredundance in Boolean algebras and we prove that for every maximal irredundant family $\mathcal{F}\subset C(K)$, there is a $\pi$-base $\mathcal{B}$ for $K$ with $|\mathcal{F}|=|\mathcal{B}|$, a result analogous to the McKenzie Theorem for Boolean algebras in the context of compact spaces. In particular, it is a consequence of the latter result that $\pi(K)\leq bd(K)$ for every compact Hausdorff space $K$. From the relation between bidiscrete systems and biorthogonal systems, we obtain some results about biorthogonal systems in Banach spaces of the form $C(K)$.

We study the faces of the set of quantum correlations, i.e., the Bell and noncontextuality inequalities without any quantum violation. First, we investigate the question whether every proper (tight) Bell inequality for two parties, other than the trivial ones from positivity, normalization and no-signaling can be violated by quantum correlations, i.e., whether the classical Bell polytope or the smaller correlation polytope share any facets with their respective quantum sets. To do this, we develop a recently derived bound on the quantum value of linear games based on the norms of game matrices to give a simple sufficient condition to identify linear games with no quantum advantage. Additionally we show how this bound can be extended to the general class of unique games, illustrating it for the case of three outcomes. We then show as a main result that the paradigmatic examples of correlation Bell inequalities with no quantum violation, namely the non-local computation games do not constitute tight Bell inequalities, not even for the correlation polytope. We also extend this to an arbitrary prime number of outcomes for a specific class of these games. We then study the faces in the simplest CHSH Bell scenario of binary dichotomic measurements, and identify edges in the set of quantum correlations in this scenario. Finally, we relate the non-contextual polytope of single-party correlation inequalities with the cut polytope $CUT(\nabla G)$, where $G$ denotes the compatibility graph of observables in the contextuality scenario and $\nabla G$ denotes the suspension graph of $G$. We observe that there exist tight non-contextuality inequalities with no quantum violation, and furthermore that this set of inequalities is beyond those implied by the Consistent Exclusivity principle.

First, we investigate the question whether every proper (tight) Bell inequality for two parties, other than the trivial ones from positivity, normalization and no-signaling can be violated by quantum correlations, i.e., whether the classical Bell polytope or the smaller correlation polytope share any facets with their respective quantum sets. To do this, we develop a recently derived bound on the quantum value of linear games based on the norms of game matrices to give a simple sufficient condition to identify linear games with no quantum advantage. Additionally we show how this bound can be extended to the general class of unique games, illustrating it for the case of three outcomes. We then show as a main result that the paradigmatic examples of correlation Bell inequalities with no quantum violation, namely the non-local computation games do not constitute tight Bell inequalities, not even for the correlation polytope. We also extend this to an arbitrary prime number of outcomes for a specific class of these games. We then study the faces in the simplest CHSH Bell scenario of binary dichotomic measurements, and identify edges in the set of quantum correlations in this scenario. Finally, we relate the non-contextual polytope of single-party correlation inequalities with the cut polytope $CUT(\nabla G)$, where $G$ denotes the compatibility graph of observables in the contextuality scenario and $\nabla G$ denotes the suspension graph of $G$. We observe that there exist tight non-contextuality inequalities with no quantum violation, and furthermore that this set of inequalities is beyond those implied by the Consistent Exclusivity principle.

We study the faces of the set of quantum correlations, i.e., the Bell and noncontextuality inequalities without any quantum violation. Principles of Economics was a leading economics textbook of Alfred Marshall (1842-1924), first published in 1890. Marshall began writing the book in 1881, and he spent much of the next decade at work on it.<br /><br />His plan for the work gradually extended to a two-volume compilation on the whole of economic thought; the first volume was published in 1890 to worldwide acclaim that established him as one of the leading economists of his time. It brought the ideas of supply and demand, of marginal utility and of the costs of production into a coherent whole, and became the dominant economic textbook in England for a long period. The second volume, which was to address foreign trade, money, trade fluctuations, taxation, and collectivism, was never published at all. Among the professors of a religious course, some do still adhere unto a legal scheme of holiness, vainly making it the reason of their peace and hope, or, at least, of their venturing to found both on Christ; and others are reconciled unto an evangelical scheme of holiness, verily making it the result of their peace and hope, as already founded on Christ, freely offered to them in the Gospel. <br> The correction which one of these sorts, and the instruction in righteousness which both of them need, may be peculiarly gained from this book: and, for these purposes, they are earnestly entreated to peruse it completely, and in the same order wherein written: so that the one sort may not, from looking first into the latter part thereof, throw it aside as Antinomian ; nor the other sort, from looking only into the former part, throw it aside as legal. <br> In fine, whereas I have scarcely ever been acquainted with any practical composure, of human product, so evangelical, in a thread more connect, and a method more exact, than this: I equally despair, that any shall reap true benefit, in a partial and confused reading; and hope, that excellent fruit shall, through the divine blessing, redound therefrom, unto such as may read it otherwise.
